12:13 This is why I love science and scientists. Its one of the few major fields where people can come together for a common cause. Not for profit nor power(unless we're speaking of nuclear fusion), but for utter human curiosity and fun. The fact that scientists around the world had this thought and came together and just said "let's crash a big spaceship into a big rock, for _science_ " reinstores my hope for humanity.

I mean, technically it was to test if they had the capability to do so if the stakes were much higher ie: asteroid on a collision course with earth. Don't want to have to test it out then.

Sounds like you've got some noise reduction or something applied to the mic audio which makes the quality sound a bit worse. Would recommend removing any processing as long as you've got a reasonably quiet room without too many big flat hard surfaces (bare walls/non carpeted floors). Also having the light a little further back behind the camera might help with some of that light bleed on the left. Great video as always though mate! Really enjoy watching your channel and looking forward to seeing more content from you. Hope you don't take any of that to heart, I just would love to see your channel get the recognition it deserves!

Thanks for the suggestions Will. I use the noise reduction because my Laptop is too noisy. I need to buy a desktop, I know, I know. I'll buy a better mic as well. Cheers again for the feedback

@@DylanJDance no worries! I recently found your channel and I’ve been loving the videos, keep it up! I’d worry less about upgrading your mic and more and optimising the room/background noise. Even a crap mic can sound pretty good when used in ideal conditions. You might be able to reduce noise by tweaking some fan settings or propping the laptop up on a stand for better airflow? Also Adblock might help with those pesky mid rolls ;)

If nothing else, the video introduces all the elements needed for a world-wide strategic defense against asteroids. Launching from the moon will take less energy, allowing for larger payloads of fuel to nudge far larger asteroids into a miss. Having everything ready to go up there, because you have a base/colony, makes the response time even better than it would be on earth.

im not sure how i feel about mars tbh or even the moon but i do think its a risk worth taking to go to the moon for a colony to grow. we live to survive and continue on. consciousness and awareness enables this drive in us to push us to some pretty far extremes. going to live on the moon is extreme for us right now but its also a necessary step for humanity to take if we want to take part in cosmic activities in the future. im excited to see what comes of this and i have high hopes for us.

In light of this video Terraform Venus might be something interesting to look at. Also similar to this video the Mars Base video would be worth looking at. Also since you mentioned Kurzgesagt's pessimistic side, Optimistic Nihilism is a pretty good video. Not exactly scientific, but good nonetheless.

I initially started identifying with space exploration and physics and stuff like that early on and never really had an outlet for it all until very recently in my life. Going from a 7th grader learning about start formation, to talking about the current status quo of the world and where we need to put our resources has become one of my greatest fascinations. It’s my dream to contribute greatly to missions like this, space colonization, research and discovery, and anything else that could curb humanity’s extinction and change minds. Finding Kurzgesagt and then yourself has allowed me to start exploring those possibilities and my own understanding as I push towards my goals of becoming a philanthropist and astro-enthusiasts so thank you very much and keep at it 💪

Sorry to write this under every video, I just don't know if you have read my comments. I just wanted to say that I highly recommend the channel "ScienceClic English". I love how they can explain complicated topics clearly by intuition without compromising on accuracy while still being captivating. Every bit is nicely spaced out to give the audience time to process, and no information is extra. I find all of their videos amazing, but if I had to pick one, it would be "What is General Relativity?". They also made an explanation + visualization of Falling into the black hole, I'd say more accurate than Kurzgesagt and I learned more from it. I love both Kurzgesagt and ScienceClic English. I think Kurzgesagt is more on the entertainment side while ScienceClic is more on the rigor, educational side. But you learn super interesting things from both of them!

Great video! When I was little kid, when I first learnt that the reason for us not sending more spaceships to space and to Mars for example is that it cost much, I was honestly surprised to hear that. How come it cost money, don't we want to do that? If people have just enough to live their lives, why wouldn't they won't to focus their work and efforts to colonizing and exploring space? I still don't fully understand that. It seems, that humanity isn't composed mostly of these curious, clever and adventurous individuals that we see on Star Trek for example, but rather of greedy, money and power hungry people, who only care to live in luxury and pleasures, instead of explore the secrets of the universe.

Only way to start new space race is by building significantly cheaper way to get to space, which is pretty much space elevator. Or by starting relatively independent manufacturing in space for stuff we need there. Both would take a gigantic amount of investment beforehand. Rocketing stuff into space constantly is just not very feasible plan developing space in any significant way. That said, I do personally think big orbital space station is the way to go. You are closer to earth for instant communication. Spaceships are easier to launch and you don't have to care about stuff like moondust and whatnot. And you can actually build stuff in zero g and you get regular sunlight. Obviously you would still need to haul resources from place like moon or asteroids, but overall I think this is much more suitable platform to start actual space economy. As for gravity, you can just spin some portion of the station to get much better gravity than in moon. Maybe you could even simulate multiple levels of gravity.

While America has always had strong internal conflicts I feel like in recent years that’s become more extreme and prevalent that it’s slowed down our technological progression. That’s what I’ve assumed from political focus etc, but details aside from getting too into that stuff and having a comment war start, I do hope it as a focus comes up once again. Technology is amazing, even just thinking about the changes just in my short lifespan.

Eh? Weren't the vast majority of books burnt by the church, religious works? From my understanding the early church tended to hoard scientific works (or proto scientific ones as the early writings were still establishing what science was) and were responsible for the modern form of University. Well, they also kept many books from the masses.

I mean, a lot of the scientific output is Chinese... they kind of have a statistical advantage with 1/6th of the global population ^^ I think as scientists/ technician in my case, we kind of have the curiosity of what would come out of all this missions. A lot of people sadly don't have that curiosity anymore and they just don't care. The only thing they really care is their image and their pockets. I think the issue is not just the education, but also the lack of curiosity for the unknown. Something else I would like to add is that a lot of people sadly see sciences and technology like this very difficult thing they can't understand, when in reality, if you just look at the concepts and not the underlying maths, most concepts in science are fairly easy to understand. Of course there are some that are really difficult. For example I don't know how the ratio of really complex concepts (without the math) and simple concepts are in astrophysics, but for example in IT (since I'm a software dev) I would say that 80% of the concepts are really simple to understand. Now of course you need maths to develop products, but that's pretty much what the engineer developing the product needs. If you use the product or just like it and wanna get a hang on how it works, you don't need the maths. So yeah, bringing science and technology a bit nearer to most people might be enough to increase the curiosity of people in this fields, which could result in better education. I think bringing science nearer on a less mathematical and more conceptual POV for most people would really help out and be less boring to sit threw threw class. (I'm not saying you should not teach simple physics with the corresponding maths, but maybe switch out a bit more boring and not so necessary topics, for more interesting topics and handle em less algebraic and more conceptually :) )

closer to 1/5th, it also helps that chinese universities are super cheap so more of the population can actually afford an education, unlike the US where government census shows that 54% of americans are functionally illiterate with a literacy rate at or lower than a 6th grade level US really needs to start subsidizing education, its super important

Whenever anyone says we should be spending money on people or the impoverished instead of space exploration, I think that's not the reason people are poor or starving or diseased. We could solve all those problems tomorrow if there was the will, but there just isn't. It isn't about the money.
@PyroMancer2k
@PyroMancer2k Жыл бұрын
All the people who think we shouldn't be spending money on space are stupid. Necessity is the mother of invention. The problems that need to be solved to over come the challenges of space are far greater than the challenges we face on earth, most of which are social and of our own making. Like we can easily grow more than enough food to feed everyone on the planet, the issue is often one of distribution as there are many cases of developed countries donating food to help feed poor countries only to have corrupt government in those countries seize the food for those in charge and the people continue to starve. There are a lot of sci-fi stories about humans trying to settle and/or terraform a new world after having wrecked Earth. But this makes no sense as if we develop the technology to terraform a planet then fixing any environmental damage we have done to Earth will be like child's play. People just don't realize the potential of pure science and research because we don't know what we don't know and thus can't say what benefit might come from it until after we do the research. Besides the Microscope example in the video another great one is lasers. I mean who would have thought messing around with light and focusing it into a beam would lead to such a revolution in so many fields. For data storage it went from CDs, to DVDs, to BlueRay. Some of the many other areas are Bar Code Scanners, Laser Range Finders, Laser Surgery, Atomic Clocks(Required for GPS to work), Fiber Optic communications, microchip manufacturing, skin treatment, cutting and melding, DNA sequencing instruments, and etc. Our "Modern" society would be drastically different if the laser were never discovered. Basically without funding pure research that often appears to have "no tangible benefit" we discover a world of possibilities that change the world in previously unimaginable ways. Back in the day magnets and electrical fields were considered strange oddities as well that were little more than curiosity that interest only those with too much time and money on their hands as it didn't put food on the table. Yet by studying it we eventually got electricity and radio. All these people who think the study of space is not worth it are typical ignorant masses that have throughout history looked down on the great minds of their time as indulging in vanity projects. I feel the only time this really changed was during the early-mid 1900s when the marvels of science brought great advancement with ships that could cross the oceans in a short period, TV/Radio that could send images and sounds over great distances, planes took to the skies and eventual rockets to the moon. So people were seeing lots of ideas finally come together to produce tangible payoffs. Sadly though I think today people have gone back to a more jaded and short term view, no longer do we have "the city of tomorrow" type mind set with things just over the horizon. Instead it's what can I get now and why is X taking so long. Trying to sell the idea of a 10 year plan to do anything is nearly impossible as one administration gives NASA the budget to do a long term mission and then the next administration pulls funding so the mission is scraped. The sad thing is NASA's budget sounds large but it's actually peanuts compared to what the government spends on other programs. However to further drill home the point, anyone who cares about saving the Earth should be supporting a Moon Base. The best way for us to get off fossil fuels is Fusion Power. Once they finish working out the designs they are going to need fuel. One of the most promising fuels is HE3 which is extremely rare on Earth. However the moon has a TON of it which could easily supply our energy needs for thousands of years. So there is actually a tangible reason to go to the moon, it's why China is putting so much into their space program right now as they are heavily invested in fusion technology and want to secure a fuel supply. People don't realize the current space race isn't like the original space race where it was mostly about pride to say you are the best. The current space race is actually a gold rush, only the gold is exotic materials rare on Earth and worth a fortune. Whoever gets their first will have a huge advantage as they could potential become the new dominant energy supply effecting replacing much of the oil baron countries in dominance. Which is basically a whole new industry which could create tons of jobs.

We can’t. Look let’s be really honest we can’t even figure out living on Mars in .33ish Earth gravity, no one will be staying on the Moon’’s 0.16 Earth gravity for very long at a time. Babies won’t form correctly in less than 1 Earth G, we will likely never call any planet with less gravity home. Once you get past the surfacism however, the upper nitrogen layer of Venusian skies offer a comfortable 1G mid 70’s temp home on blimp technology we have right now.

Getting humans to Venus and establishing a FLOATING BASE is 20000x harder than setting up a campfire and a tent on the moon. How exactly do you land on a floating Venus base, and WHY exactly would we have a manned base on a planet where we can barely access it’s surface for resources, how do we get people to that base, if something goes wrong what happens? Having babies on the moon is a no-go right now, but if we have millions up there one day, I’m confident we will find a way to accommodate Lunar Humans’ health needs.

I love that people are getting so excited about space because of jwst and now the Orion launch, but I also don't see a good reason for going to the moon again, or colonizing it, or even sending a non man-made spacecraft there. If the goal is going further into space, it's such a better use of resources to go further to start with, rather than small incriments that could take decades and dont teach us anything new. The moon doesn't have useful information or resources, as far as I know. I also don't understand why they're reusing old and inefficient tech for the project, or why they are throwing away reusable rockets into the ocean rather than retrieving them. No offense meant to your take/video, or the video that is being reacted to, just some of my thoughts and questions about the Artemis project. I'm trying to understand it's importance, honestly

I don’t understand why elon is going to mars.😑 while the moon is still waiting to be conquered. Mars and the moon have relative issues. But the moon is so much closer and elon can create the 1st space station. Mars is too far and it’s not like u can travel whenever u want. U would have to wait for a specific time/date in which mars is closest to earth. For us that would be dec 8th making the trip only last 2 months. Vs a whole 7 month trip and this only happens every 2 years. While the moon is 2.5 days away so I’m case of a emergency u can still arrive in time. While mars….7 months 🤣 Also why terraform mars? When we can’t even terraform the Sahara desert 🐪 🤣 Baby steps

Moon is really exciting place because it is close to the Earth and its low gravity might allow us to build space elevator one day. And with space elevator the economics change a lot and access to space becomes really cheap. And there could be really huge base at the geo(lunar?) stationary orbit. To refuel ships, to mine asteroids... and then use the same model on a lot of other moons. And why countries do not cooperate on financing permanent colony... first there is huge risk that the colony will want independence sooner or later and at least in the short term the Earth countries will be left behind. And countries still wage wars here on Earth, steal kids, force people into slavery, commit genocide of entire nations. Many countries do not have freedom of speech and as absurd as it sounds, they force their inhabitants to believe in their lies, so they get immune to the lies of other countries. And now they should cooperate with people who believe in different lies?

Lmao, capitalism is too concerned with short term profits. The Soviet Union jumped us into the space age and that was when it was already in decline. It wasn't even anywhere near the US in terms of economic output at the time either and they were able to accomplish amazing feats of innovation. Imagine the amazing feats we could accomplish if we created a socialist world economy were the unemployed and all the brains born in poverty had a chance at education and were given opportunities. Where people who work in useless jobs, unproductive sectors of economy, and areas that could be automated were instead allowed to take academic pursuits and explore their curiosities and passions free from the fear of imposed starvation and forced labor. A world where we don't hinder our own progress due to seeking short term profits. A world where it's a good thing to have too many resources rather than an unprofitable oversupply because then everyone gets stuff for cheap rather than shortages being created to drive up profits.

america has become occupied with policy recently. were frantic about our rights here on earth and other local issues while the rich tend to keep the poor occupied with cheap media and fun games. basically were kinda dumbing ourselves down and going through a process of recession in terms of societal growth and composure. i think if a country wants to become a worldly leader ahead of the united states the spot is opening up if there wasnt one before. meanwhile america is kinda just chillin focused on the little things. thats what i get out of our situation at least.

I love your videos, bud. You're one of the few content creators where I actually learn something new sometimes because of the depth you get into sometimes. That said, please don't turn into one of those constant "all religious belief is bad and stupid" types. There's no reason science and God can't co-exist. And even if you don't believe that, keep it to yourself maybe? That's not what people like me come here for. We get tired of hearing it, honestly. Keep up the good work otherwise though, mate. Looking forward to the next one. :)

Could infants be born on the Moon? I imagine there'd be a lot of issues developmentally with children born on the Moon or Mars with weaker gravity. At least I know there is large concern in the medical community that less than 1G pregnancies and births will bring unforseen physiological problems. Using the colonization of the America's and Australia as an example doesn't realistically look at what the utility or logic is of colonizing these things with people. I understand the technological development will bring unforseen yet highly valuable increases in quality of life, but you can innovate technology through other initiatives. If this is done haphazardly like Elon or others want it to with Mars, I think it will likely fail and result in the first population dying in isolation, and potentially in agony, depending on the circumstances. How do we produce food? How do we reclaim water? Zero-g isn't the only hazard, weaker gravity is also a health risk long term, just like with zero-g for astronauts at the ISS. If children can't be born, and if the health risks related to lower gravity are to great, we will not be 'colonizing' another planet. This is not me lacking scientific literacy, this is me identifying some pretty obvious concerns that many people seem to just ignore because they have an emotional connection to something like Star Trek or The Expanse becoming a reality. Well, reality tends to suck sometimes, but we need to be adults and acknowledge what the basic tenants of reality are. For about 45 years since Skylab, NASA has not been able to mitigate the health problems associated with zero-g, regardless of exercise. These issues are expected to persist in the 0.16G and 0.38G environment of the Moon and Mars. I don't know about you, but I don't have any interest in going to Mars to be in a depression inducing colony within a cold and desolate hellscape of a planet, with a pretty obvious narcissist, Elon Musk, serving as some sort of weird corperate emperor. This opens up another can of worms - which is this weird obsession people have with Elon Musk, who is one of the greatest con men of the last 100 years. As some former SpaceX engineers have noted, that companies success has happened depsite him, not because of him. He is not an actual aeronautical engineer and the guy has a pretty dubious track record if anyone actually cares to look into his history.

YOU are the BS artist. Elon has a degree in Physics - which I believe is more difficult than engineering. His companies provide good paying jobs with benefits and stock options to more than 200,000+ people, plus spinoff jobs to another 300,000+. THIS does not happen by accident. By comparison I'm willing to bet that your life's contribution towards making this a better world adds up to zero. I suggest you crawl back under your rock.

In response to your religion bashing, there has never been a point in history where if not for religion mankind could have made some great technological leap forward. Religion didn't burn the Library of Alexandria nor did it burn the Library of Baghdad. While it's easy to look at the many wars fought in the name of religion we must also remember war both potential and actual are and have always been one of the greatest motivators of technological growth. We could also look at the many killed for religious conquest but at the same time the spread of religious territory facilitated the spread of ideas and knowledge to fill those libraries, in effect travellers didn't need to walk all the way to India to learn Hindu-Arabic numbers, the spread of Islam brought it to them. Then there's the downfall of Rome and how after their territory broke up it was the Church collecting books and teaching monks to read and write for centuries, a practice which extended into the development of Cathedral schools in the middle ages - schools which served as the prototype for our modern universities. If you google whether religion held back science there will be plenty of articles arguing it did using the Galileo affair as proof but it's important to know Galileo's heliocentric views got him placed under house arrest but his students continued to study and push heliocentrism. Even in the face of religious persecution, the advances of science couldn't be held back, telescopes were now common enough to ensure it. In short, the Dark Ages never existed, religion was the guiding structure unifying people and unified people are productive people.

OK I will be a bit of a poop. First there is the idea or goal of sustainability or self sufficiency. This goal is very different when the Americas was settled vs the Moon or Mars. The amount of logistics and infrastructure and industry required today to do this is massive. You can argue that the US hasn't even achieved this goal. For example, how do you build a computer on the moon from scratch? The industry you need to build a CPU is massive. Now you can say that is obvious and they didn't mean truly self sufficient. But if you are planning to replace earth in the event of a global collapse then you need a colony with maybe 100 Million people. I have thought about colonizing planets outside our solar system if you could build a wormhole. And I think if I built a wormhole and found Earth 2, I would most likely colonize it with primitive societies. Like the Amish or villages from 3rd world countries. And that is with a wormhole big enough to drive a truck through. Part of this line of thinking is because I would want to keep the wormhole top secret and I would permanently close it and throw away the coords of the planet after. True independence to improve odds of humans surviving somewhere. Wormholes are dangerous. Any one person could put one end of a wormhole in the center of the sun and we would all be dead. A black ball technology if there is one. The second issue I have with colonization is population growth. There are many biologists speculating that an animal may not develop properly in low gravity. Babies could be deformed or blind etc. I'm not aware of any experiments they have done to date, or where the science is headed on this but it seems like a very legitimate concern. Something that could poo poo alot of dreams and aspirations of colonizing space. Unless we build O'neill cylinders in space. I actually did the math on what a cylinder would be like that is the sq. surface area of Manhattan NY. I built the city in the inner cylinder, Industry in the middle cylinder, and farmland in the outer cylinder. Turns out it would only do 1 rotation every 80 seconds approximately to produce 1g. The only issue would be the Coriolis effect that would mess with any football games and give some people headaches. Maybe. Anyway, fun to think about.

I do enjoy your videos but this is childish and very Privileged . All of these different countries put their money together? Do you know the amount of problems that plague the world? Even in the United States the richest nation in the world plenty of people live in 3rd world conditions without free healthcare, social safety nets, areas with eroding infrastructure of every aspect with rampant violence and insane amount of homelessness. They don’t even care about their own citizens enough to spend money on them and now they should spend their taxes to jus t another cause next to the military, and who knows how many other things that doesn’t benefit the average citizen in the slightest? And they don’t do it because they are stupid? They are stupid but spending the money on this space exploration instead of social safety nets infrastructure and education would be smart? Sure space exploration is interesting but how about making sure people have a certain Living standard first. How about using that money to invest in lifting up poorer countries, not donate but invest so that they can be self sufficient and grow their economies. But who cares about human lives when you can take a risk that might advance technology a bit. How about you ask Jeff bezos and Elon musk both the Worst Exploiters of Workers in the Western World to fund it instead of blaming Americans to be stupid because they don’t let their tax payers fund it. They already have space companies but they don’t want to risk their money they would rather finesse the system and pay for it with subsidies which they have been doing. Sorry for the rant just being real because this is just so childish

I get what you're saying, and I agree to some extent there could be more put into the people...but we know that won't happen. Countries and leaders look for glory. To be number one...and that's just how it is and always will be. Selfishness reigns supreme and is always knocking at the door when it comes to leading. And if not then, it's always there waiting. There are generous leaders out there, who care and fight for the better of the people, but it's so much harder with bigger countries. The thing is though, he is right. If we advance fast enough peoples living will go up. It is happening right now. With our tech increasing considerably people benefit from it too. Happened in WW2 for example. So much money was put into war, massive strides were made. There's always something happening which is a competition in the world to force larger countries to want some part of that.

Good to see you blame religion for book-burning 4 thousand years ago by raiders, and not being in space already, good to see who you really are. Why is it so hard for people to accept that religion is merely a part of one`s philosophy, and that religious zeal can manifest an anyone, regardless of religion? Religion in and of itself is not bad. What is bad is authoritarianism and manipulation, which doesn`t care if it manifests in a fanatical ISIS leader or a stalinist communist. I like you, and your videos, but you clearly have not had experience with religious people personally, and it is just frustrating to see you acting like a bigot.

(I'll leave the original post underneath this. But since you edited your take and added waaaay more to it then you originally posted I'll just update this before my downloads finish. I HAVE, had personal experience with religious people. Both sides. When I was poor and middle class. My life choices as well. The bad side and the good. The attempts to change me all this. Present day! You claim to say it's in the name of others but it's in the name of their gods and personal gain. Look at seed faith, Ukraine, what's happening in around the world with the poor. Religion targets people and either attacks them, scares them, or steals from them. There was someone who explained it far better but look up Christopher Hitchens debate for why its not a force for good. He gives plenty of events recent to that time as well as examples. Heck even steven fry gives examples of why.) You mean that he's speaking facts. Religion is an ancient coping mechanism for humanity. It's time to shed it and put the money where it really belongs. And before you even comment, explain to me who's right. Is it your version of religion? Is everyone else wrong? Who's right? Why do the books legit contradict each other consistently. Why do people not stone people anymore or pay people money to keep their daughters after violating them. Just saying, there's so many things wrong with religion that people with actual critical thinking skills see through the lies and efforts to make money. Forcing you to hate your neighbors for being different. Destroying progress repeatedly for a god that even if he did exist, takes credit for miracles but not for tragedies. It's sickening to anyone who remotely has an education and was not forced/brought up into it, to see from the outside. Especially the whole you will burn if you don't repent etc. It's fine if you worship, I have no issue with that. Believe what you want as long as you don't force others to believe it like so many try. But when someone says something that legit is a fact, because it happened...sorry you need to suck it up.
