Yes, because battery is 9V and LED is just 3V So if you don't use resistance LED will get fuse If you don't want to use resistance then use 3-4V battery

Short leg is negative terminal Long one is positive terminal

As per the syllabus semiconductor is in the syllabus but this particular Topic i.e. GATE is excluded from latest syllabus But it's not always necessary to make projects from topics which are in syllabus. Something teacher or school suggest to make any physics project (no matter what's the topic) But as you tell me your teacher is not allowing you to make this project. So it's my suggestion to consider his/her instructions because at the end Mark's is in the hands of Teachers
