You don't need to consider the tension to find the acceleration of the whole system (unless you use the method of free body diagrams)

That often happens to many of us when we study physics. It happens to me as well. Sometimes I need to look at something over and over again, and it may take hours before I begin to comprehend something.. They key is not to give up and keep at it.

You can do so by drawing a free body diagram around each of the two masses, or for the mass going up: T = m1g + m1a For the mass acelerating down: T = m2g - m2a
