Maybe. Probably not in HSC. But I argue a good physics a student in high school should know cosine rule.

@@PhysicsHigh just an observation what with it not being on the formula sheet, I do 4u maths so I know it anyway, but its probably one of the harder formulas to just know off the top of your head

Old reply but you need an angle to solve for it. Because it's pointing in NW, we can generally say it has a 45 degree angle. The same goes for NE, SE, and so forth. We can also say North has an angle of 90 degrees, because well, it is perpindicular to our 'x axis'.
