Note! My egr is deleted and my heater tube is modified because i chose not to buy the kit. Pi swap basics and parts and explanation on upgrades. also this is for romeo engines only

The tune also matters a lot on these modular's..I had a 1999 Ford Interceptor and a 2000 Ford Interceptor, the 2000 had a change in the tune (probably emissions related), I swapped the PCM from the '99 into the '00 and it felt like it grew a set of balls..like it was an entirely different car. Right now I have a '99 Lincoln Towncar that needs some work, I was thinking of getting the 2005 PI engine then swapping everything from that onto the nPI block then using the larger 5.8l throttle body and porting the intake elbow..Downside is like I said before, the tune matters and on my townie it is definitely not like the Interceptor tune.

I agree my eco tune gets 22 mpg but runs lean my power tune get about 12

Great explanation. Very informative. I have a 96 mustang gt that I bought. The motor has npi top end and a built bottom end. The pistons on are flat top pistons no valve reliefs which make the compression ratio @ 11.1 on npi heads. I want to do a pi swap but with pi heads and flat top pistons the c/r will be at 12.5.1 . what would you recommend? Should I be okay to do the pi swap myself and being able to drive it to a tuner on 91 octane?

I would have valve reliefs in before i did a swap like that and you will have to pull alot of timing to drive it on 93

Do tou know if the cams that have the pressed on gears can be swapped into heads that had bolt on cam gears? I found a set off of a 02 f150, they are pressed on gears.. id rather use bolt on gears because I don't have a press

What did you do for spark plugs, and wires? I just done my swap but my car is clugging and misfiring so bad. I have a set of motorcraft stock spark plugs i bought September 2020. Mechanic suspects this clugging is misfiring and i should get new spark plug wires. What you think? Also i deleted the EGR, but no tuner will delete it on my tune file. I ended up doing a pi swap heads and intake

Please tell me you are running atleast 91 in it it need 91 to 93 after the swap or it will ping like crazy

@@46Savage running 93, my mechanic thinks its running so badly because we physically had to delete the EGR. I need a tune file that deletes the EGR control solonoid. I have a ‘94 thunderbird so its a bit different 4.6l 2v motor

You can try that but it still shouldnt make a difference

Pull plugs and see if its running lean and what cyls and do a compression check

It doesn't need a tune but without a tune you wont see the full power benefit

Hey man I have a question for you!! I just diagnosed my crown Victoria misfire! Cylinder 4 on this 2v 4.6 my cam follower fell off ! Why would this happen ? I was able to reinstall it with a flathead screwdriver,no problem. I then checked compression on this cylinder and while the other cylinders tested at190-200psi and held there well. This cylinder (4)only got to 90 psi. A wet test brought it up to 190psi. A friend says”yep,bad rings needs a rebuild”. I dont believe it. The car has 40k miles on it. Should I be lookin for something else ? I’m a bit of a novice with auto repairs. With the cylinder on the compression stroke(not top dead center) I shot air into the spark plug well and can feel it freely leaking out of the intake port(I have the intake removed-another issue). Am I missing something ? Should the head be removed? This is my daily driver and only vehicle and I need it running by the time this quarantine crap is over. I also had a coolant leaking internally in the intake manifold. It’s possible it was pulling coolant into this cylinder ,even tho cylinder8 was right next to the leaking culprit

Cam follower can pop off with bent valves or broken springs if the valve is stuck open on the exhaust side it would explain yout low compression i dont think your rings are bad unless you broke a piston

Id be looking at the head more than the rings look and see if the intake valve is closed

im attempting this build on my 98 and im wondering what kinda cams you used? did u use the pi cams or something aftermarket?

i used pi cams at first and then upgraded to todd warren custom spec cams

My car has a 2007 Cvpi engine. With the intake side of the heads ported. It's a fbo car and straight piped and 5 Spd, had a shitty 2.1 60' but ran an 8.8 @81 mph. That seems pretty good without a tune right? Lol

Not bad at all. Mine was a 9.0 @77 with a 2.2 60'

@@46Savage I figure with a tune, fox body springs up front and good tires I could run low 8's to high 7's. Drop the 60' down to 1.6/1.7 & get the mph up a few I think it's possible.

Yep i wish mine was running better but my shift points are screwy on my auto rn plus i just lost 3rd and 4th on a 6k trans

Will the non pi (1994 tbird lx) romeo valve covers fit a 04 pi head? I hope the oil cap is on opposite sides

As long as the head is a romeo it will fit if its a windsor then no

Thanks man. Doing the pi head swap this week and just orderd the Ford performance gasket kit as you recommended. Question, will i need a pi plate as you said the non pi plate doesn’t fit the pi heads?

You will need the head changing kit valve covers that fit the heads cams the nipple for the waterpump and the pi intake water tube and a pi intake
