Thanks for sharing the love you have for this music, all the best! I'm currently in the process of learning jazz piano and it's true that it does feel overwhelming a lot of the times.

You’ve already helped me so much with this video! I can’t thank you enough! So many videos out there on this topic are a load of waffle but that was so clear ❤

I play trumpet mostly for fun. I play mostly gospel/classical/hymns. I really would like to play jazz, but it almost impossible to learn from jazz trumpeters as our fingerings differ. However I’m still determined thus also listening to other instrumentalists. Thanks for your effort to help some of us.

Great video! I'm a beginner and recently started trying to learn standards by ear. I started off with the melody of Afternoon in Paris and it actually went really well, I figured it out fairly quickly and am able to regurgitate it the way I hear it in my head from the recording. The problem is when I went to the Real Book to learn the chord changes, I realized that I had no idea where the measures begin and end from learning by ear. So it looks like I'm going to have to learn the whole thing measure by measure from the Real Book in the end, so I can keep track of where to insert the chords and where I am in the form. There are additional things that make the process more confusing, like the Real Book version starts at the end of a measure for example. Do you have any tips on this aspect of learning by ear?

Great question! This is a big part of the challenge of learning tunes by ear, for sure - if it were just the pitches of the melody that would be much easier, but we also need to learn the movement of the bass and the harmony and how these things all fit together against a rhythmic grid. Next time you learn a melody by ear, see if you can write it out on the staff (including rhythms) before you check the Real Book. You can learn a lot about rhythm this way.
