As a kid in the 80s...I wanted the D-50 & the DX7 so bad...those two along with the Roland JD 800 were my dream keyboards back then....They all still sounds awesome.

Roland D-5 was my first real synth. A budget version of D-50 with some of the familiar sounds but a terrible user interface. I also drooled for the JD-800 for a long time until finally buying it and D-550.

Incredible is that the biggest producers come from Japan: Yamaha, Roland, Korg. All these Japanese companies created and create the most iconic sounds for the whole world. Big respect

Be careful as not all the companies mentioned actually have their product made in Japan. Yamaha has some of their stuff made in China. Korg is the only one that actually has a sticker on their equipment that says 'made in Japan'. Kurzweil is owned by a Chinese company (Young Chang I believe) and that's where their synth are made.

Does it matter where it's made? The important thing is where it's designed. I have a Hammond SK2 designed in Japan, put together in China. So what?

If you have a social conscience it matters a LOT! Perhaps you don't care that the Chinese use Uyghur slave labor or that the CCP has it's fingers into everything? Nobody does business in China without the CCP being in on it.

@@John_Michael2000 The D50 came out about 86 or so. A total game changer. Nothing had onboard stereo effects at the time. That alone made it a must have, but those sounds, coupled with those effects, heard in headphones at the store for the first time? Sheesh. Basically mind blowing. Edit: a quick Siri check 1987 was the year of release. 🙂 Edit 2: Any Roland module going all the way back to the JV 1010 will make you really happy. 🙂

For some reason I choose years later the D70 and although it is not per se the "facelift " of the D50 but from the U220 (it was marketed D70 to capitalize the success of the D50) I still felt instantly in love with it. The D70 was my loyal companion on all my covers band from 1994 til 2000. Yes I know, it sounded sometimes a little bit "thin", but it was easy to program and I appreciate the 76 keys with four zones.

I love my XP30! I started out with a Roland JX3P, but soon became a DX7 fan. I added a Korg DW8000 along the way. But once sampled ROM synths hit the market I went hardcore Roland again: U110, U220, JV90, XP80. Then the Motif came out, moving me back to Yamaha, where I currently reside, a Montage 6 being my most current synth. Oddly enough, I never picked up a D50 along the way.

5:45 space the final frontier. These are the voyages of the spaceship enterprise. It's continuing mission, to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, and to boldly go where no one has gone before.😂 This bit surprised me. Very good.

Eric Persing had a lot to do with the design of this synth. I remember reading about when he introduced it at NAMM. He pressed a key on the unit with the Digital Native Dancer patch loaded and everyone’s jaw dropped.

Absolute legend of a synth. Nothing ages me more than seeing a synth that was groundbreaking when I was a teenager being referred to as retro. Lovely playing, too. 👍🏻

I had a D50 in my teenage years (90s). Literally pipe organ was my reference for what a real organ actually should sound like hahaha. And I played Enya with that patch. (Although I always thought left hand was like low G then high G before the chord, i.e. not octave played in left hand at the same time... just listened to it now and I think I'm right!) Fun vid

I almost never warmed to the D50😊, 1 used to play as a buddingsession keyboardist with a few bands at a leading hotel in Africa, mid-late 90's, who had the D50: it felt to me rather "detached/spiritless" compared to the DX7. However suprisingly the rest of the band/audience seemed to like it (or my playing ;)😘) as it seemed we were doing a good thing together as the band, I remember someone made a demo while we were freestyle jammimg live before starting the night show , only then did I hear firstly how it did sound good, but also how actually good (as a band) we were playing. Great respect for these pioneering instruments

I would love to be able to play keyboards but no matter how many times I have tried to learn, the coordination of finger to keys wont stick, which is odd because I have excellent hand eye coordination. Too late to learn now @ 58.

I still have mine circa 1988 or so ... the pad connections on the inside have gone bad so several keys no longer work. Probably not a huge fix if there are parts around somewhere.
