I see people complaining about you talking too fast, but honestly, I appreciate it. I get impatient when learning new things, so quick and to the point is right up my ally.

If you're a beginner or returning pianist, *do these pentascales!* I already posted a comment about this on Allysia's Jan '17 Q&A vid but it's worth encouraging everyone to do these. I'm a returning pianist and I never did these. They are really helping me get my strength back. Plus, I never played in every key and this is a fantastic way to take small bites with learning all the scales. Thank you, Allysia, for this simple but effective tip. Surprised I don't see this more.

Hi pianoTv thank you for making videos. I’m self teaching myself with Alfred’s piano book for adults and these extra exercises and music theory is so helpful. Thank you so much !

Thank you for these marvelous videos that are really valuable to beginners like myself. The fact that you provide them free of charge makes me feel even more guilty for even the slightest suggestions to improve them but here goes: Please play each exercise more slowly once when you first introduce them. Some of we slower ADD/ dyslexic types would really appreciate it. Again, just once when you first introduce them. That way we have at least a chance to digest it in real time without having to replay it over and over and you and the rest of the group who have no problem with your speed are only asked to indulge us for what, maybe 5 seconds? Thanks in advance. I will be happy to pay for your more advanced courses once I process these beginner courses. Thank you again for these marvelous free lessons. Peace, love and namaste.

Thanks! Nice to have a place to start. Soon as I got to Db I wondered about my technique for fingering. It’s an awkward one at first and I can already feel my wrist cramping up!

I learned natural and harmonic scales. Now I just need the melodic scales and then pentascales. My goal is too learn them all 😥. Thank you for this.

Oh man, if you do melodic minor scales, pentascales will feel like the easiest thing ever. Melodic minors are beasts to learn!

I've been playing piano for I think 7-8 years now (I've only REALLY been playing for 4 years when I switched teachers) and I've played music Rondo capriccio, spinning song, waltz in C sharp minor and the minute waltz, puck by Grieg, a 2 chopin mazurkas, 3 inventions, 2 fast movements from 2 different Hayden sonatas, and more pieces. I think I may be playing the black keys Chopin students next , but I really don't know what to play next because most of the music I've played is romantic so should I play a big classical piece or begin something impressionistic?!

I would do something like that, yes. Try a different genre like Baroque, Classical, or anything modern (like Impressionist) - it's a good way to diversify and learn new skills.

I'm not trying to be a jerk or anything, but can you please explain the difference between a penta scale and a pentatonic scale? I really want to know if I'm missing something here. Thank you.😀

Do you do these scales 4 octaves like the other scales? And also, is the fingering the same for every pentascale?
@PianotvNet
@PianotvNet 8 жыл бұрын
Nope, I usually just keep pentascales to 5 notes (otherwise they would just transform into regular scales). And yes, the fingering is always 12345 (right hand) and 54321 (left hand), unlike regular scales where the fingering changes depending on what scale it is.

I see that when you play a pentascale that starts on a black key, you sometimes press the white key right in between the black ones, instead of at the spot where you would normally press a white key (more downward, towards yourself). Being a male, I have somewhat broader fingers and I find this somewhat hard to do. Am I still supposed to practice it this way?

Can you play all pentascales on every key by heart? Not sure if I have to memorize or derive them on the fly from the formula.
@PianotvNet
@PianotvNet 8 жыл бұрын
Good question! Yes, I play every pentascale by heart. What I get my students to do is figure out 1-2 pentascales every week by using the formula, and then memorize that pentascale.

@@PianotvNet i was wondering if we start from the first videos that you've been posting and watch them in order,do we have a complete beginner/ intemediate program as you would teach in live/real one on one course.
