I am both a visual and logical thinker and this lesson was the perfect format for me. When you spoke about how music theory is what allows random “play by the ear” melodies to evolve or become fused with other ideas it really hit home. I’ll create parts that I love and they never become more than just parts. Music theory is the logical side of music that I am missing and I appreciate the time you spent delivering this tutorial. New sub for sure. :)

A little note: in My Heart, chords shift from Am-G-F-G progression to C-G-F-C-G-C later in the song.

Yeah, by starting out minor, it sounds sad (the Am), and when it gets into that big build, the want is stronger, so, switch to major (C).

I think I must be dumb. I have no idea how you figured out the melody numbers and what the chords were to the song. Is that just ear training? I mean I need this kind of music theory but I didn't understand this. :(

So, we're using the Am because relative minor, yes? Sounds sad. Gives you the chance to switch to C major (sounds happy) later. I know all major keys part up with a relative minor.

Super helpful! I just had a (probably stupid) question: How do you know where to play your chords and scale notes? Could you have played the entire song further to the left/right?
@windsofmarchjourneyperrytr2823
@windsofmarchjourneyperrytr2823 4 жыл бұрын
Because it's on the sheet music. That note can only be that note on piano for that octave. If they have to switch the whole notation, they can indicate up or down an octave with a line and "8va." So the sheet would be read under or over that line at that time up or down an octave.

Why would you use as your first example in a for dummies video, a song which immediately complicates/breaks the pattern with this low 5, high 5 business? You told us you would be using just those 7 keys and then immediately use a key outside of those 7. This is the problem with all music theory for beginners videos. They throw you in the weeds without explanation and then immediately start building on this foundation of sand.
