Kaio is making a lot of japanese untranslatable silly jokes playing with words sounding almost the same than verbs so they had to adapt it in english Here's a reddit copy paste i found : When Goku meets Kaiō, Kaiō introduces himself by scratching his back and declaring it's itchy (痒い/Kayui). He keeps repeating kayui, kayui, slowly changing it into Kaiō. Kaiō's next joke has him pretending to make a phone call. When he doesn't get a reply, he states: "dare mo denwa ni denwa" "Nobody's answering (den wa) the phone (denwa)" Goku's joke is "futon ga futtonda", which is basically "my futon flew away". The anime added three others: My cat (neko) lay down (nekoronda)! Pencils (enpitsu) can't see (mien pitsu)! The flounder (hirame) had an epiphany (hirameita)!

Normally you would be correct, being dead would mean he doesn't need to eat, but he was allowed to keep his body to train. That's why he disappeared instead of a body staying there like Krillin when he died.

Fun fact: King Kai is a partial translation of Kaiousama, his real name in japanese. "Kai" (界) means "world", "Ou" (王) means "king" (you can see both kanjis combined on his chest), and "sama" (様) is a honorable suffix only used for gods (Kamisama), the royalty (Oujisama, "prince"; Ouhimesama, "princess"; etc), and for customers (okyakusama), because for japanese shop-owners, the customers are gods. I don't know why they dropped the suffix in the translation, it sounds cooler with it.

I highly doubt that Goku actually received equivalent 1000 years' worth of training. If it was, Goku would probably be strong enough to defeat not only Vegeta and Nappa, but also the next arc's villain. Logically speaking, if King Kai's planet has 10 times more gravity than Earth, then training would only be 10 times more effective. So equivalent 880 days for the 88. That's only about two-and-a-half years' worth of training.
