their house and cars are paid off. 3-6 months of expenses looks a lot different for people with no mortgage, no rent, and no car notes. at this point, if they were to lose their jobs, they'd only need a few hundred a month for property tax, food, car insurance, gas, cell phones. $10k is more than enough
@gibblespascack14187 ай бұрын

You missed where they said they have enough margin to save 50k in 6 months...that means they have an extra 8000 a month, with a paid off house. 10k is plenty for them.
@LegDayLas7 ай бұрын
@@BrianErwin That was a whole lot of things to just be "a few hundred a month". Insurance for two cars alone would qualify under that claim. We can call it $200 a month. Assuming a modest $50 per person a week for food that's $400 alone in food. Assuming they are driving the cars a modest $100 worth of gas (I use $300 myself). Lets say they have a modest $80 a month for cellular. It's difficult to estimate property tax without all their information I'll assume a modest $400 monthly. You should also assume home repairs will be needed, so lets call it $400 a month on average. We have also ignores power and electric, so lets add another modest assumption of $200. There are even more expenses that could be in play such as home owners insurance, but I'll end the line on expenses and do the math. With those hyper-idealized assumptions, to maintain their bare bones standard of living they would need about $1800 rounded a month. Is 10k enough for that? Sure, it qualifies just under 6 months, but it's not "more than enough" especially when you understand just how generous those assumptions were.

Well, there’s a quick fix for that. Just call in to the ‘pick a Side’ show and get approved to buy $50k worth of Fieros.

"Car and Driver" rates the Grand Highlander the second best mid-sized 3-row SUV. You didn't specify which SUV you purchased.

A Toyota grand highlander? No idea what that is but it sounds like it's cheap.

Jennifer: We could have it saved up in 6 months. Joe: we could throw $5-6k at it a month. I figured out where his $30-35k figure came from. Save up for 10 months, your not planning to buy the car for another 24 months.

I'm saving up for the grand highlander as well. Good taste.

2007 Acura MDX at 200K still has 400k in it

Their income is 150k. Dave's rule is all things with motors should not be over half. So 75k is the max value of There cars. His work can is 20k so that leaves 50k. 25k each for a newer car. So the math answer should of been NO

Mdx transmission don’t last half as long as the engine
@gnes047 ай бұрын
So they can have 75k in total cars, the guy already has 2 cars, and they are telling the girl to get a 50k car? And they're telling the guy to get a new car as well? Nah something doesn't add up. I definitely would've voted for the 35k highlander, that's still plenty luxury. I think Dave would've agreed with me

lol,i think the idea of everything you own not being HALF of your annual income is insane......my family owns everything we have with a motor on it,SUV,TRUCK,CAR,DAUGHTERS CAR,BOAT,SXS,MOTORCYCLE,TRACTOR,LAWN MOWER, AND MY CLASSIC CAR.probably adds up to almost our total annual income but 3/4 of it for sure...we do fine..i should mention it guess that im a mechanic with my own shop also..nothing gets fixed by anyone but me..

If they can raise the money in 6 months, then just raise the money for the car. There is no reason to think hard about this. Raise the money, then after doing that put the excess money into a brokerage account and start building up some real assets beyond the house.

They don't have the money to buy this car. They only have $10K in the bank, how is this okay? If they had $150K in the bank, different story. But they are practically broke and have no retirement.

Nope, no way. Terrible decision! Having no retirement investments at their age is a serious problem and it was never brought up at all. The $50k vehicle will have higher insurance costs and will just light a bigger pile of cash on fire than the $30k option. If anything they should buy her the $30k option and buy him a $20k truck upgrade. The hosts picked the fourth or fifth best option on the menu…

How I see it, do you have a few kids? You don’t need a Highlander. Maybe the RAV4, but why do you need a three row when you don’t *need* it? It’s like when people insisting on moving into a five bedroom home but all their kids are grown? Why a five bedroom house? lol

Since she doesn’t want it, definitely should throw that money in a CD or something to get something back to mitigate the blow. Especially if they can do back to back 5% CDs on that $50000 she wants to spend on that car.
