their house and cars are paid off. 3-6 months of expenses looks a lot different for people with no mortgage, no rent, and no car notes. at this point, if they were to lose their jobs, they'd only need a few hundred a month for property tax, food, car insurance, gas, cell phones. $10k is more than enough

@LegDayLas
@LegDayLas 7 ай бұрын
@@BrianErwin That was a whole lot of things to just be "a few hundred a month". Insurance for two cars alone would qualify under that claim. We can call it $200 a month. Assuming a modest $50 per person a week for food that's $400 alone in food. Assuming they are driving the cars a modest $100 worth of gas (I use $300 myself). Lets say they have a modest $80 a month for cellular. It's difficult to estimate property tax without all their information I'll assume a modest $400 monthly. You should also assume home repairs will be needed, so lets call it $400 a month on average. We have also ignores power and electric, so lets add another modest assumption of $200. There are even more expenses that could be in play such as home owners insurance, but I'll end the line on expenses and do the math. With those hyper-idealized assumptions, to maintain their bare bones standard of living they would need about $1800 rounded a month. Is 10k enough for that? Sure, it qualifies just under 6 months, but it's not "more than enough" especially when you understand just how generous those assumptions were.

@@LegDayLasthey drive a 2007 and a 2004. he's 56 and she's 45. they can insure both of those cars for $5 a month. in fact, i'm sure they only have liability since she crashed recently and didn't fix it. when i drove a 2007 lexus ten years ago, i paid $15 a month for insurance, at age 30. gas in colorado is only $3, and assuming they lost their jobs, they would be applying for jobs online, no longer having to commute to work, and only driving when absolutely necessary, like up the street for groceries. i've done rideshare in los angeles, where gas is $5, and i budgeted $375 a month for it, so yes, $100 is fine for people who shouldn't be driving while jobless. without income, they go on beans and rice. when i was broke, i lived on $1 tacos and $0.30 packs of noodles. $5 a day, $35 per person a week, $300 a month. i pay $80 a month on electric with four teens on a video game all day, so $200 is pushing it. in an emergency, they don't get to run the AC all day; $40 a month. property taxes, yeah, maybe $400 a month, and there aren't monthly house repairs, so no need for that. cell phones and internet bundle, $80. home owners insurance, $10. that totals around $900 a month. the main point is, most people's biggest expense is their rent or mortgage, which this couple doesn't have. in an extreme case, even if they sold their cars, and just paid property tax, and walked to the store for food, they would be fine for almost a year. you guys putting $50k to the side for a rainy day and it just sits there.

If I understood correctly, their net worth is $700K and the house is $600K of that, so they only have $100K for retirement. They don't say how old they are and what percentage of their income they're investing into retirement, but I'd prioritize building up their nest egg even if $50K plus Joe's car is under half of their $150K annual income. If she's waiting two years to buy then maybe the Grand Highlander will have dropped into the $40K range and it's a compromise between what she wants and what Joe wants price-wise.

$50k for a car with $150k income, paid-for house, but basically no other money is a hard NO. Retirement these days costs WAY more than a house, and the market value of one’s primary residence cannot be realized at all unless one is willing to go back to renting. She should drive her 2007 MDX into the ground and save/invest the $50k. $150k HH income in 2024 is a subsistence living in most places, and Denver is a relatively expensive city.

I only caught this when I replayed the video. Starting at 1:27 they state their net worth is $600,000 for the house and then $700,000 in retirement. I totally missed that when I watched it originally.

How the BLEEP are they on BS7 with only $5,700 invested? Did they skip over step 4? We already know they skipped over 3 bc 10k is NOT 3 months' expenses for these 2 living in Denver. And making 150k/year they should be socking away 22,500 every YEAR in retirement minimum to even get past BS4. Did Jade and George miss this??

It's a little bit of a marketing problem for non-car people. Honestly they all need to train themselves in car knowledge. Not everyone understands that Grand Highlander is a totally separate model, not a different trim level. However I doubt she would really be happier with that model because it doesn't sound like they're constantly shipping around kids. She should just buy a used Highlander.

Soo essentially they went with Joe? The problem was that the wife tried to switch the husbands words at the beginning by saying “My husband thinks I’m fine with the car I have.” Which was a lie, he never said that. He wants her to get a new car in the 35k range not 50k. Which is basically what Jade and George told her to do.

That's way too much, woman. We're gonna be millionaires in a couple months and make over 200k and also on BS7 and I'm thinking of buying a used Highlander for around 30k (or Rav4 for 25) with cash that I already have. And I drive a 2005 car. Woman, you can't afford no 50k car. At all. You get to "live like no one else" when you EARNED it.

If they can raise the money in 6 months, then just raise the money for the car. There is no reason to think hard about this. Raise the money, then after doing that put the excess money into a brokerage account and start building up some real assets beyond the house.

Nope, no way. Terrible decision! Having no retirement investments at their age is a serious problem and it was never brought up at all. The $50k vehicle will have higher insurance costs and will just light a bigger pile of cash on fire than the $30k option. If anything they should buy her the $30k option and buy him a $20k truck upgrade. The hosts picked the fourth or fifth best option on the menu…
