Beautiful series. And great videos. Thanks. However, I have two questions : - when you're measuring the pup, they are still soldered to the pots. So your not really reading the pups resistance ? It has 500k in parallel to it. - how can you tell the color of the bobins ? By removing one of the 6 screws ?
@jdl2180 Жыл бұрын
When did he mention the color of the bobins?😢
@devonfelix59433 жыл бұрын
These guitars are so amazing, but the problem is this.. they are so highly praised because of they’re feel, and especially the sound from the PAF pickups. But now the prices are SO outrageous that they have become “collectors items” which literally takes away from everything that made them cherished in the first place. It’s just kind of odd the way we idolize items. 1- we find something that is amazing 2- we make it a highly loved and cherished piece because it does what it does better than anything else 3- we drive the value through the roof so people stop “making it do what it did best to earn the highly sought after status” in the first place. Lmfao. Best SOUNDING guitar on the planet. Best FEELING guitar on the planet. Ok, I’ll buy it for $300,000 and put it in a display case so it never gets heard or felt again. EUREKA!

Putting all the hype aside, the truth is that the best guitars EVER MADE are made TODAY.
@andrewgarcia31362 жыл бұрын
There might be some truth to that but those guitars aren't being made by Gibson for the most part. It's a fact their quality control was better in the 50s.

A beautiful guitar and a great watch. Question; You said "the pickups have never been uncovered". Yet you know that they're a double cream and a zebra, how? :-)
@cw47445 жыл бұрын
typically the way that's done is by unscrewing one of the pole screws and shining a light inside or using a fiber line scope camera to creep in the top. There is usually enough clearance between the pickup cover and the bobbins.

OMG What do you call that type of wood grain? It's not a burst
@cw47445 жыл бұрын
the term "burst" refers to the sunburst finish on the maple top, not the wood grain. Any burst can be a plain of figured top, still is a burst finish which started sometime in mid 1958 at Gibson and continued through to the end of the production in late 1960/early 1961.

How did these gtrs achieve their prices? back in the day they were just a guitar. There is a critical exam of the gtr but I'll bet if you look at Page's 2 LPs, Pearly Gates or Perry's Brownburst there will be wear and tear, certainly on Page's which were on every tour/album he did. No doubt any number of luthiers could build you a gtr like this that will sound like this. certainly Gibson claim to.
@dragan46584 жыл бұрын
Everything you said is correct Mark. It's the history, the nostalgia behind the guitar that stays with the guitar that drives the price.
@nathanadkins29854 жыл бұрын
My friend built a 59 reissue. It sounds better then anything Gibson is putting out. They tried several at a guitar shop and the response was nope not even close. His 59 reissue sounded better then the Tom Murphy they had.

Love seeing these videos and hearing all these gorgeous old guitars getting played, but it does make me kinda sad that, at least at the moment, guitars like this will always be bought by wealthy collectors to be displayed rather than played. I just wish these collectors could somehow do something similar to what the owners of Stradivarius violins do, and lend their insanely expensive and beautiful instruments to famous performers so that they can be heard in performance the way they were made to be. Put a guitar like this in the hands of Marcus King or Joey Landreth or Chris Buck - players who are too young to have been able to buy them before they hit stupid money, but who have the talent to really make them sing. The thought of all these guitars just sitting in climate controlled boxes forever is just heartbreaking to me.

In 1979 I took the day off with a fistful of hard-earned cash, intending to come back home with the best LP in town. I had decided on a black LP Custom and while waiting on the sales guy to ring up some strings I picked up a curious guitar - a Yamaha SG-2000. Guess which one I went home with. The Yamaha was only $6 cheaper, so a real premium guitar. Better cosmetically, better ergonomically, better sustain, better tone, and a neck that won't break if you give it a hard look. I would like to hear it through that DC-30, though, even if it is another piece of gear that ordinary mortals can't afford. And yes, the proper word is "dragged."
