(picking 604) oBike bicycle lock explored and unlocked (kind of picking)

How does an oBike bicycle lock work and how secure is it? I found such a lock on a destroyed oBike bicycle from the scrapyard. Here you see the lock's mechanical properties explored. I also test how difficult it is to unlock the lock by exploiting mechanical vulnerabilities [ kind of picking with a bit of destruction ]. Looks like that the company should have put more thoughts in making their locks more secure.

Nice little gearbox/motor. Shame they needed a 'service' window though.Looks like you have a spare 18650 Li-ion battery also now.:o)

Yeah, the motor is pretty cool. The lock is probably the most expensive part on the whole bike and the most useful one. I've heared that the obikes are really crappy.

plastic shell is needed for the BT to connection, but a metal cover over the service window would be nice. The cutout give room for the activator to move out of the way when unlocking.

Yeah, a cover would easily improve the locks security. Maybe the kept it open to break into the lock easily themselves when the electronic fails.

Fantastic and thorough review of this lock. I've seen these bikes for hire all over the city, and was really curious about the locking mechanism. I love the tiny reduction gearbox! 👍 Btw, you're right, the bikes are poor quality. Most are already falling apart from customer abuse and cheap components. The seats are easily stolen, too.

Habe you tried a magnet? You might be able to lift the bolt with it, or even turn the motor by altering the polarity of the magnet.

Did you look at maybe accessing the service window through the hole for wires to solar panel

The wires come from the side (too far away) and also I had to break away the solar panel.

An interesting lock,if the unit has been out of sunlight for a while it may be the battery voltage is too low to sustain a Bluetooth connection

Right. Also if the battery fails the lock can only be opened with force. Maybe they left the window to have an easy way to rescue a bike once the lock won't open anymore.

Either my magnets are too weak or it simply doesn't work. When the cover is on, the distance is maybe to large and also all the metal around is deviating the magnetic field.
