Great video! I'm new to beagles and have been learning as I go. I have one 5 month old BlackCreek pup. As you mentioned in your video I have been taking him out almost every day. He is tracking, but not opening yet. You mentioned a desire to hunt/search for their own rabbit. In your opinion is there a way to reinforce this behavior? My BC pup stays close and checks back with me a lot when we are in the field. Once he picks up a track he will go, but typically not until then. Keep the video's coming and thanks in advance!

Hi Neal, most of the time those traits are genetic meaning the ability to hunt and the desire to hunt comes with the blood. There is a way to enhance his ability to search and not come to you so much if you have access to someone’s training pen you need to take him and drop him off and disappear, that needs to happen 4 to 5 days in a row or leave overnight for about four nights you will definitely have a different dog in about five days he will change or you won’t see any change at that point you need to make a decision. As far as opening he will eventually do that continue doing what you are doing. Overall he’s not doing bad at all that comes with being a puppy.

In your experience what blood line or blend of blood lines has the most search?

That will be a very difficult question to answer being that I have not ran every blood line out there but what I found is that one element does not make a rabbit dog I’ve had dogs that search real well but could not hold the track so I look for the combination of search and the ability to hold the line.

Most people start with a half an acre or acre pen for puppies if it’s larger just make sure there are a lot of rabbits so they will be able to see them from time to time and chase them until they start using their nose

Hard to find. I like those black and tan they are hard to find. What Blood are they. My whole kennels is built around. Wapo Lt.Dan Crazy. Alot of open marked dogs. I do like those black and tans . Of course color dont run a rabbit but just checking the blood

When they are running a rabbit and they are far away shoot one or two times gradually close the distance also when they are far away and you jump a rabbit shoot and called them and put them on the track they will eventually associate shooting to be a good thing.
