Painted rocks are usually finished off with some sort of clear coat sealer. It protects your art from everyday wear and tear as well as the elements when hiding your rocks outdoors. Today I am showing off a few different options that you can find in most craft stores.

Spraying gloss is the most expensive way to go. Brushing on is far more inexpensive. My second comment: The Deco Art Triple Gloss clearly states on the label "Not for outdoor use"

I've been painting rocks as gifts for close to 11 years and I've tried spray and brush sealers. In my experience, if you don't paint everyday, spray sealers get clogged up, eventually. One of my favorites is the DecoArt brush on triple thick glaze.

Is the triple thick sealer waterproof? I was just looking at it on Amazon, several people mentioned in the comments that it's not waterproof or intended for outdoor use. Does anyone have experience using this for outdoor rocks for an extended period? Thanks

I’m new to this, so I really appreciate the comparisons. I notice the finishes more easily when I’m outside in the sun. If you do another tutorial, maybe take the rocks outside. The sunlight really shows off the gloss differently. I think I’m gonna go with the Krylon and the Duraclear so that I have an indoor and outdoor option depending on weather 🙏🏻💕🌻

I prefer the duragloss triple thick paint on. But sometimes I have noticed it smeared the paint. I put it on with a sponge brush. I use combination acrylic paints, acrylic pens both water based and oil based. Am I pressing too hard with the brush? Is it the oil paint? Should I dab it on rather than stroke it on like a paint brush? Thank you kindly.

With any brush on, on top of any paint medium, I like to take the smallest amount and dab it on first. This helps set any edges that may want to smear around. When that layer is dry then I put on a thicker one brushed on normal.

Loving your tutorials, thank you. I'm completely new to rock painting and my question is a very basic one. I don't have the steadiest hands and often when i draw the outlines and fill in, the colours it often bleeds into the drawing. I was wondering is there a clear sealant which i would be able to paint on top of the outline to avoid this ? Hope this makes sense. Thank you Maureen

Are you using paint pens or acrylic? Make sure that you let your outline dry completely before filling in so the colors don't try to blend together.

Does the dura clear gloss varnish works for outdoor rocks? It doesn't say UV resistant on it.

I would either double it with something else or use for rocks gifted to others to stay out of the elements.

Is the uv resistant from kylon wether resistant i have made 60 some odd rocks and i am selling them in a few days and would like to market them so that they can be placed in a garden, which one would you recommend? I also have a budget of about $30 cause i spent all my money on art supplies 😂

You can look at quite a few of them here. rockpainting101.com/best-sealer-painted-rocks/ There are a lot of options out there. I would suggest Krylon or Rust-Oleum. Just make sure it says outdoor. UV protectant. Also, non-yellowing is a good thing to look for.

If I seal my painted rock with brush on Satin, can I spray over it with triple thick for the colors to pop more and glossier or once I first sealed it, are the color depth set?

I don’t personally do multiple kinds but I see people post in groups that they do. I would just advise to do a small “tester” rock with any medium that is new to you. Never try something new on a masterpiece 😊

Just read the fine print on the labels. Make sure it says "weather resistant". And make sure you place them where the water won't pool. If it is a lot of water then you may want to go with Resin.

Do you have any advice for me; I have only been sealing my rocks with matte Mod Podge so far and Facebook groups say it is not enough. So if the coat of MP are dry on the rocks that I have at home, will one of these sealers make them ready to put them in public?

Yes, as long as your sealant is weather proof it will work. I prefer Krylon Triple Thick or Design Master Gloss. Both are weather proof, the Krylon is shinier.

I have been painting rocks for over 3 years. I use both gloss brush on mod podge and also the gloss spray. Both are sealants. You do not need a nothing else on top of that. Now as far as outdoor use, my yard is full of painted rocks. Some have been out there over 2 years or longer. Most sealed with mod podge and they are still beautiful and shiny. Use what works best for you.

Is the Krylon waterproof, Like does it last in the rain? or does the paint drip down?

I checked two stores and online. The Krylon was $11 on line, I didn't see it at Michael's. Home Depot had the Rustoleum one for only $4 so I'm thinking I'll try the Rustoleum and see how that goes. Anyone have other suggestions? I feel $11 is extreme for the Krylon.

That is really high... prices on Amazon are very unpredictable right now. I believe ACE carries Krylon so you might have luck there. But, maybe not every store so I would call first. I have used the Rustoleum before with good results, but they have a few different ones. Make sure you get one that protects from the elements your rock will see.

There are so many different sealants out there. A few things to look for. Make sure it states non-yellowing. Also, if you will be putting them outdoors it says weather resistant.

I've Decoupage rocks for outside, they always fade super fast. I use the Key pin UV resistant and it didn't work. I used 3 coats.😥

I think it's actually the ink the napkins that is the issue... You could try resin.

Absolutely! You can search on Facebook for a local rock group to join if you want. Some locations have a hashtag they all use. They are just considered random acts of kindness just paint them and hide them around where you live 💗

If you want shiny just make sure you are getting a glossy finish. Matte and Satin won’t give you the super shiny look.

Good video. Do you have any advice on sealing rocks that have been done with paint pens? I’ve tried three different sealers and they all smudged the words I had written with paint pens.

The only paint pens I have a lot of experience with are Posca. For those I use all of the sealers shown in the video. The main thing is to make sure they have dried completely. Also, when applying the first coat do a very fine mist from at least 8" away.

So on the triple thick you only used 1 coat? I'm trying out resin this week for the 1st time. We'll see if it's it worth all the work that comes with it... Or if I can just stick with my sprays. But I do use the Liquitex high gloss finish quite a bit. Does take 2-3 coats, but it looks like glass! I love it! Thanks for sharing your tips & tricks!! ❤🎨

I don't think the Triple Thick is. I haven't replaced that one so I can't look. But, when ordering or purchasing at the store just give the label a quick look. Most will say if they are weather proof (or resistant) on the front :)

Krylon makes a triple thick that is weather proof. I can't speak to the triple thick she used here.

Whenever I use the Krylon I get a white foggy looking glaze over my project. Ruins the project. Has anyone else ever experienced this?

Make sure you shake it up really well before each use. Also check the temperature on the side of how hit needs to be stored.

I used both the clear acrylic spray and the brush on varnish on different rocks. I discovered that with some alcohol, some Goo Gone, a Magic Eraser and some elbow grease, I can literally scrub every bit of pain off a rock even if it has dried for several days. Any suggestions for sturdy weather proof sealer that will hold up???? The liquid varnish has smeared some of my designs.

It's pricey and not the easiest to work with, but once you figure it out... it really is the most durable/waterproof top coat.

The rocks are so hard for us to see the finished on your rocks. Maybe next time you should use darker rocks for videos. They all look the same. I see no difference
