This 3-4-year-old tree, variety Winter Wonder, shows good balance, with fruit distributed along the central leader, and down into the central parts of the tree. At the same time, there is good growth of new shoots all over the tree, showing that the root system is well established, and that the tree is already preparing the structure that will produce next year’s crop. Winter Wonder should be picked in early or mid-October depending on the season. Even though the colour looks very good, at the moment that the video was made - 1 October - the fruit was still very tight on the tree. Ideally an apple should come off the tree easily, by simply lifting it. The tree itself is giving us a firm indication that even though the fruit looks ready with its fine colour, in fact it needs more time on the tree to reach ripeness. If apples are picked too early, they shrivel earlier during storage, and flavour is not so good. Demonstration and narration by Dan Neuteboom, camera by John Paddy. Read more at realenglishfruit.co.uk
