We filmed this before leaving for Gamescom/RTX announcements. This is just our way of learning how to use and navigate our new office and storage system.

This was filmed last-minute before leaving for Germany (last week), and we're still in need of production machines for our staff at the new office. We've all been working off of laptops for the time being, and it's getting old. This is the first step to figuring out what will be in GN's new production machines!

We crammed this in before leaving for Germany last week, as we were unsure of how many filming opportunities we'd have while there. Turns out, it was a lot, so this ends up as just bonus content. Consider it part of our office storage tour. It was produced just before getting on our flights. If you need powerful CPU on X79, then buy Xeon E5-1680v2, its overclockable 8c/16t. With DDR3 2400MHz CL9/10 (or even 2666MHz CL10/11 if you are lucky with IMC) it will be good for your tasks.

I'm glad the office is coming together for y'all. As for the older systems, I totally get not wanting downtime or wasted time just trying to figure out how to do stuff on a new system that you already know how to do on the older one. An hour to do something on my win7 machine, vs not figuring out how to even do it on win10 after fussing with it for a few days, gets a bit aggravating at times, especially when the win10 interface acts up. The R7 is fantastic for compute heavy stuff, however, it is a lot less grief to create 3D stuff on win7 with a GUI that is responsive and I already know where stuff is and don't need to waste time looking for it. lol. I totally understand at this point why you keep the FX system around, as much as it hurts to know your working with such a slow comp. I really do hope the team can get some good stuff "That just works" unlike RTX marketing, lol. Great vid Steve and Crew. B)

Its kinda scary how normalized its become for people to drink to numb what ever trouble there having. Rather then dealing with like a rational human and not giving in to using a depressant to fix your problems. Which is even funnier when you take into account the whole situation with smoking weed. And how its Still classified as a Schedule 1 drug, you know next to fricken heroin. But yet alcohol a depressant (worse than a stimulant fyi) is sold legally across the planet because everyone did it. Literally the entire reasoning behind why its such a staple across the world. Sidenote the whole prohibition movement and there mindset is the same one that old non educated people are using against Weed to victimize and throw out any legislation that tries to get passed. Who knows maybe they will finally shut up and let the bills pass to put THIS DRUG along with many others in the right classification for it. Due to you know more info via scientists actually doing research into said wrongly classified drugs back in 1972 and hasn't been changed AT ALL. Let me repeat that 1972 the classification is that old. Ya thats how behind the DEA is. Pretty disappointing to know Rhetoric spewing republicans were right about something the government is slow to respond to a lot of things. Especially when they control it and force there Christian and Conservative beliefs onto the laws of our land. Rather then using science and rational conclusion creation to govern there decisions. What a system we have don't we.

Well, same counter-argument applied back then: I bought a 3800+ ($400 I believe), which I kept at 2.4Ghz (stock was 2.0Ghz), for basically 8 years, 24/7. It ran with a Thermalright XP-90C and a Noiseblocker 90mm fan (on an A8N-SLI Premium). It’s still working too. I gave it away to a guy on Reddit wanting to teach overclocking to their kid… 3 months ago! ;) PS: I know you’re being sarcastic btw! ;)

No reason to, the 2950x is the same as the 1950x, just with zen+ enhancements, and the 2990x has some memory issues and some scheduling issues. I get this move is taking a while, and you have to imagine the amount of money he is losing by NOT reviewing stuff during this process, but he is focusing on the move and doing it right, so it doesn't become a problem later.

So glad to see you guys re-use older testing equipment. Tech channels (cough LTT for example) waste so much perfectly usable stuff on shelves while spending tons on the new hotness for their workflow. Not to say it isn't worth going big where necessary, but it normally just seems like an excuse to brag. Also I know a fair bit of the new stuff is "donated" by companies who want a plug but it still feels wasteful not to use older stuff.

Just so y’all are aware, you can get some videocard supports for your rendering stations on amazon for dirt cheap. They’re the stand type not the bar type so it actually works. I threw one in my system a few years ago and it definitely helped my mobo PCIe slot last using a card with a heavy cooler. Just a thought since it’s saved me money over time. Love the channel, keep doing what you’re doing.

For production system downtime problem, one (ridiculous and crazy) solution is go diskless with centralized auth (AD in windows or LDAP in linux). Everything from the home directory (not sure what's the equivalent in Windows) to production contents all goes to NAS, and boot from PXE. The base OS shares all the needed drivers (which is not possible in Windows again, but possible in Linux due to GLVND/mesa) and auto detect-and-load needed driver. When one production system needs go down, just start another machine (even largely different config) and login, everything is there and work continues.

I can tell you from personal experience, the Asetek liquid cooler that came bundled with the FX-8150... throw it in the garbage, they were prone to failure, and personally had to give up my Antes Khuler 920 1st gen to replace it in a rig I built for my brother, leaving me aircooled til recently. When I took it apart, the failure point was the plastic plate just above the copper hotplate that channels the coolant from one side to the other had warped, causing the impeller to get stuck. Junk product, toss it.

I would still considering switching out that old FX 8370 with something else newer you already said you wouldn't retest again, even if its only a basic off-site workstation.
