Buying new equipment is great if you don't mind spending the money. However when it comes to weights, often times it makes the most sense to buy used, or second hand. Unlike other gym related items where there's usually a trade off between quality and price, you can score some awesome things on the used plate market.
Make sure you check out the other videos in this series!

I got about 405lb of plates from my Uncle when he unloaded his home gym, a squat rack for $50, a leg press for $100, some bars, and a lot more. Obviously I got the family deal, but it was a hell of a steal and really nice of him.

This is the route I went for my garage gym. I was patient and averaged paying about $0.50/pound for my plates. I brought my scale with and only bought plates that were the marked weight and heavier. And since I’m a machinist, I brought the heavy plates to work and made my own milled plates.

Hi Brandon. Can you do a video maybe on the safety straps. Why it is benificial. I have a wall mounted rack with catchers. But sometimes the height of the catchers are problematic. Like if the weight goes up, and I squat deeper I sometimes end up touching the catchers and it trows me off. And if I am training alone I am scared of losing balance. I feel that if I had a closed powerrack with straps I would feel much secure. What are your toughts about it? Or am I just imagining things?
@BasementBrandon

@@BasementBrandon Hi Brandon. Thank you for your answer 🙏 It is just that I am scared of missing and hurting myself with the catchers. The straps don't let the bar bounce I think. So it is safer I guess. But for now I dont't have much room. So maybe in the future...

Took several years and a fair amount of patience to get a complete setup. Never drove more than an hour each way. Paying the price for fancy new stuff is just silly. Doesn't bother me a bit to put one manufacturers plate next to a different one on my bars. My mix and match solid DB collection works just as well as a brand new set costing a fortune. Many of my DBs are old time round head and globes that I got cheaply. When I'm dead the kids can sell them for a bundle, hehe.

I've actually had better dealings on FB than CL. Less chance of getting stabbed.

@@BasementBrandon yeah i'm not sure if it's just because of corona, but they call their shitty rusty noname cast iron ''oldschool'' and charge you like 4-5€ per kg (maybe like 3$ per lb) Meanwhile you get brand new fancy cast iron for under 3€ per kg. The only good deal i found are competition bumpers from crossfitevents, but those aren't cheap in the first place

I prefer the texting facing inwards (in training) but other than that I don´t really care. Calibrated plates are nice but real powerlifters don´t care about aestethics:)

When I consider buying used, I can't help but think the stuff is tainted by failure and bad mojo.

I'm glad I bodybuild and not powerlift. Powerlifting is so much more expensive
@BasementBrandon

I don't think so. Bodybuilding usually requires more machines. Powerlifting you just need a bench, rack, and bar!

I know, I'm stoked. They're cast iron, and I got them for about $0.65/lb. Is that a fair price? They're in generally good condition.
