Thanks for the video ... I am thinking to purchase one to open a industrial size can and would want a smooth edge to pull out the stuff inside safely without having a tear to the package. I am thinking to go with the electric one. Thank you again
@sideskraft4 жыл бұрын
If you check into Amazon reviews of "smooth cut" openers, there is an alarming number of negative reviews of all brands and models. It seems that, because they cut thicker metal to do the job (compared to standard openers), the cutting blade dulls faster, which makes sense. Depending on how often they're used, this dulling can happen as soon as a few months or more than a year. Unfortunately one of the side effects is that tiny "shards" of metal are deposited along the edge of the can and remain there after the lid is removed. Unless the user cleans that can edge, the metal shards will get mixed with the can contents if they're poured out. This is very concerning and anyone considering a "smooth cut" opener should keep this in mind and take appropriate cautionary measures.

sideskraft, very interesting points, thanks for sharing. Out smooth cuts are used all the time and still serving us well, but based on your details above its just a matter of time. I'll wipe the edge of our cans from here on out. I saw a video of a guy using the older style can opener to do a smooth cut but haven't tried it myself yet.

The larger can is where most people, like women with smaller hands & seniors with arthritic hands, would want to use a motorized opener. Taking longer is no problem because it still saves time letting you do something else with out your wrists wearing out. Yet, the hand units are great as simple, space-saving tools.

Thanks. Well, they are all still going strong. The battery one still needs batteries and that's always going to be a factor. I have a Farberware can opener. I found it to work OK when new but wore out and stopped opening cans in relatively short order. For me, that was about 6 months. During that time I estimate I opened about 40 or so regular size cans. And, like you pointed out, it was slow. Though that didn't matter to me. It also seemed to go through batteries pretty fast. It would work with low battery power but was much slower and iffy in cutting performance. I have nothing to compare to in that regard so I don't really know if that is typical for that kind of device. Another caveat is that I didn't keep good track of how many cans it opened without problem since I wasn't doing any actual testing. Also, it is worth noting that the motor and gear system didn't fail. It was the cutting system that gave out. Once that happened, it didn't matter if the batteries were new or not. The main take away from my experience is that it just wasn't very durable over time. I'm trying a Kitchen Mama Mini Electric Can opener next.

DNTME, how did the kitchen Mama Work out for you? Agree the battery operated can openers struggle most of the time, and do eat up batteries which I have found as more time passes.

@@MakeItorBreakItNow So far it's been great. I do like the small size. Hasn't struggled at all. Always cuts cleanly and completely in one pass around the rim. Not doing the job on the first pass was an early warning sign of impending failure on my previous opener. But then I've only opened maybe a dozen cans with it. That includes one of those large cans food in bulk come in. Still on the first set of batteries even. A lot of the stuff I get in cans has a pop-top opener built in so It'll be a while before I've used it on enough cans to say one way or the other. The one thing I didn't like about it is that the magnet was recessed in the body by a lip around it. Doesn't take much distance for a magnet's attraction powers to drop off significantly (that pesky inverse square thing), and it shows in this unit. Major Digression Here: So, I filed down the lip around the magnet until it was flush with the body (screw the warranty!). That helped some, but cans with a high lip are still problematic. However it does grip the lip on the outside rim of the can better. IMO, if anything the magnet should protrude beyond the unit's body. Wouldn't take much and, Generally, this shouldn't really be a problem since the opener lifts it's tail when doing it's work.

I just brought sausage gravy in one of those large cans, can't open it with those tricks where you use a spoon or a knife, basically out of luck without a can opener. Think I'll buy a battery powered can opener, or maybe the safe cut. I used the first one on a tomato sauce can once, ended up getting a huge cut across my entire arm from the opened can lid, bled quite a bit. Wonder if the battery powered one take rechargeable batteries, or perhaps, a USB charging version.

It's not how fast an opener works but which opener will last long
@MakeItorBreakItNow3 жыл бұрын
kristfferson, good point. But I would suggest that when you have a lot of cans to open the time to open does become a factor, kind of like the difference of cutting vegetables with dull versus a sharp knife. As long as these three openers are cleaned and cared for I've found they last. The battery operated one was recommended by my mother who is in her 80s and can't really twist open cans anymore. The battery are a pain factor on that one. Thanks for your comment. Always appreciated and welcome.

I just have a couple of things to say. The 1st opener you used, I have used most of my life and always made sure to get the Swingaway brand as it seemed to work best and last longest. But I got one just like the second opener from Walmart about 6 months ago for $8 and change and haven't had a single problem with it. The only drawback is opening cans with liquid. You can't really drain them properly unless you get a special gadget that looks like a sink drain strainer. But those are fairly cheap as well and not having to worry about being cut by a can lid and no stuff falling into the can contents like metal shavings or little bit of paper is well worth it. As for the big #10 cans, how often does anyone open those more than one at a time unless you're a cook making food for large groups? In those cases, I guess I would keep my old Swingaway. And for people wanting to know where to buy the safecut openers, Google is your friend. Or go to Walmart dot com or Amazon and look for safecut can opener and you should be able to find several at many price points. Little secret, Mainstays from Walmart is made exactly like the Tfal and a few others and at this time is under $9.
