Absolutely perfect short video that covered so many questions I had, first year grower( dinner plate) 3 tubers from grocery store. Started exactly like you suggested in shallow tray from take home restaurant box , went EASY ON WATER, transplanted into window box earth box( 2) the 3rd in 5 gal plastic terra cotta look a like planter. So many blooms! Should have trellised earlier! Giving away cut ones already( July in Georgia. I’m hooked. LOVE YOUR CHANNEL! Comprehensive tutorial that could not be improved on! Thank you dear!

Like you, I enjoy trying to create my own new varieties by taking seeds. However I’m not keen on blooms with open centres, ie I prefer fully double varieties. I’ve found that if you leave any open centred types around, which every bee in the area will visit, then you will end up with seeds that produce open centred seedlings. So when I start the seed making process I firstly take off all the flowers of any open centred varieties, so the bees have nowhere else to go. Then I remove the petals around the middle of the blooms of fully double varieties to expose the centres where the pollen is hiding. I’ve found that seeds produced by crossing two fully double varieties are much more likely to develop into fully double seedlings. If you’re interested I’ve made quite a few KZbin videos showing how I do it.

I am new to planting Dahlias. I want to plant them in pots as well. When you leave them in a pot, do you have to take them out and separate the tubers? Or is that only for ground planted ones? Hope this doesn't sound like a stupid question, I'm not sure if potted ones are handled different than in the ground. Thanks!

@@lorigoodwin269 Hi Lori I don’t take my tubers out of the pots. I live in California and our weather is warm. We don’t get a hard freeze ever. I just leave them in the pots. When they’re dormant I cover the pots with a large clear garbage bag to protect them from the winter rain. Once a month I give them a small drink of water. In the spring I uncover each pot and fertilize them and begin watering them. Blessings to you and your family 🙏🏾

Ahhhhh, the Dahlia Seeds... Dahlias... Dahlias... Dahlias... I've been having The Great Dahlia Seed Planting Debate with myself ALL Winter! In my mind, I go from one scenerio to the next... A.) Should I start the seeds indoors so they will have a head start? OR B.) Should I just wait until the middle/end of March and direct sow them? C.) Should I take the chance on, what SEEMS LIKE a mild Winter, will it continue? And I should I start the seeds in a milk container outside, around mid-February? I know people do this method in colder regions than mine! (Zone 7b/8a Central Texas) Altho, it STILL seems risky to me! Mostly bcuz I've never done it. And finally - D.) I am strongly leaning toward the combo method of Direct Seeding, along with a cut plastic bottle over top as a mini greenhouse, AFTER my last frost date. Or maybe early, in mid-February? This seems like the safest method! (altho, it's the slowest...) And so, nothing but debate has been going on! This debate has created a long phase of procrastination. Which has turned out to be LUCKY bcuz of 3 things: 1.) I don't really have any room in my tiny house for seed starting. 2.) This Ice Age weather we are now experiencing! Geez!! I'm in Central Texas, and the entire state has been covered in snow for the past 3 days!! (I've NEVER seen that before!) And even a pretty good layer of ICE 4 days before the snow!! So, had I started them outside, they FOR SURE would be gonners at this point!! I mean, even my established chives are not going to make it thru this one! (I'm still crossing my fingers for my Fall planted garlic tho...) And - 3.) Even if I had found room to start them indoors, they surely would have expired this past weekend. Our 1st power outage lasted 7 hours, and the house temperature got down to °56 degrees for most of that time. Now, on our 3rd day of rotating power outages, while we humans are fine, (and getting used to it), the house just isn't as warm as it should be for seeds. So here I am looking for the bright side of things! (as if that sunshine bouncing off the snow isn't bright enough! 😎) HOW do y'all snow peeps do this every year?!!! The Great Debate continues! I still have those Dahlia seeds in their tiny plastic packaging, awaiting my life giving decision. They are resting quietly on my bedside table. It's a special spot just for them!! Bcuz this extremely cold weather has lasted soooo long, I find myself wondering just HOW LONG WILL THIS ICE AGE LAST??? I realize all y'all Northerners are rolling your eyes at me right now! And you're right. I'm a Winter Whoos!!! I think Dahlia's and myself might just be made for each other tho... We sure have a lot in common. ▪︎I'm a warm weather girl, ▪︎not HOT weather, just warm weather. ▪︎I wither in the extreme heat. ▪︎I bloom brightest in the Spring & Fall. ▪︎I'm just not made for ice, and snow! ▪︎Sometimes my husband has to dig me out of my bed too! Hope y'all are staying warm this week ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

There are a few different options that people use - some clean tools with a bleach solution, some use ones that don't contain bleach. Whenever I'm working with the dahlias, I usually have a bucket with cleaning solution in it and rotate between a few different pair of clippers. It's a little bit of extra work, but I assume it is worth it in the long run to help keep the plants as healthy as possible. Thanks for watching! :)

How far apart do you plant your tubers? I want to start a cutting garden where i don’t really need to plant ascetically. I just want to fit as many plants in as I can. Today I bought a few bags of tubers at Costco . When I was at home I opened the bag to count (I have had load luck in the past) any how there was green mold on one of the potatoe looking thingies. I cut it off but since the tuber isn’t big to begin with I wonder if it’s worth keeping. How many of those potatoe looking things does a Dahlia need?
@TONYAwiththeflowers3 жыл бұрын
Dahlia tubers can vary greatly in size, depending upon the variety. Even small tubers can produce nicely-sized plants. Each dahlia tuber needs an in tact top, neck, and body. They will also need at least one growth eye on each tuber. When buying clumps, the skinny neck portion of the tuber is often damaged. If this is the case, that singular tuber won't grow. Technically, each in tact tuber can be divided and will produce a plant - but special attention has to be taken to make sure it will be viable. Hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching! :)

@@TONYAwiththeflowers can I sprout it 2 months before the last Spring frost?
@hmh38083 жыл бұрын
@@hungsblomsterhus399 I do ! - but I take the first and sometimes second sprouting stem for cuttings ....otherwise it gets too leggy and long without pinching back (or using for cuttings) by the time the ground has warmed up and is ready for them.... they only really need a month in a warm room with a good window / plant bulb - so you have to judge based on your indoor conditions... The first three or 4 inch stem with a set or 2 of leaves is a perfect size to make another tuber ....just cut -leaving a bit of the stem on -right where it comes out of the tuber. ...it’ll sprout again and then You can pinch that back if it gets more than 6 inches or so before planting time. I start this early because I am in Canada with a short growing season in 4B and I just got sick of waiting till the fall for flowers!

I dont know if I missed it, but how long before your final frost date do you pre-sproud your tubers? Thanks for all the information!

I have another video that is specifically dedicated to pre-sprouting that may be helpful. I generally start them about a month before my last frost date. Thanks for watching!

Will these grow on the Texas gulf coast? We have hot tropical summers. We get a lot of rain and it is very humid.
@TONYAwiththeflowers3 жыл бұрын
Hi! Hopefully, someone from a similar growing zone can offer more detailed help here in the comments. In my experience, the dahlias can handle heat and humidity during the hottest parts of summer. However, they don't bloom during this time and will occasionally wilt. A little bit of afternoon shade seems to be helpful. As soon as the weather cools some in fall, the plants usually start blooming like crazy. I'm so sorry that I cant offer more detailed help. Thanks for watching! 🌱🌱🌱

I can tell you that they do best if you mimic where they are a native plant. For dahlias it is in the mountains of Mexico... so they don’t love steaming humid hot as much as dry heat cool nights which is why they probably do best at the end of summer... but it doesn’t mean you won’t have success where you are because one summer can vary so much from the next! Try ....and let us know!

New to growing flowers so this may be a completely stupid question but if I plant Dahlias from seed will they produce a tuber right?
@TONYAwiththeflowers3 жыл бұрын
Yes, dahlias from seed will also produce a tuber. Thanks so much for watching! :)

Loved your video! When pre-sprouting dahlias, do you recommend giving them light or keeping them in the dark? I’ve watched videos where they recommend the dark so that the tubers focus on growing roots instead of reaching for the sun but others use grow lights.
@TONYAwiththeflowers3 жыл бұрын
Personally, I like to pot them up in soil and give them plenty of light. I have another video that goes into more detail about it in the dahlia playlist that might be helpful. Thank you so much for watching! :)

Wonder how many gardeners may loss theirs with this crazy winter we're having. So glad I didn't have any last yr, after this month I may think twice about leaving mine in the ground, normally I think they'd make out fine, abnormally not. Thanks again for the info.

We're getting sudden cold and snow here, too. Here's hoping all of the hardy annual seedlings will make it through!
@tracycrider7778 Жыл бұрын
If you mulch heavily and tarp them they might be fine

@@tracycrider7778 I'm in zone 7b, the ones that did come back last yr, were not as nice as their previous first yr. I do see growth on what was lifted, potting those soon.

5 of my tuber has not sprout yet and it’s been a long time. I am eager to dig them out to check if all is well. I placed directly to soil without amending the soil. Disappointing so far. Out of 10 only 4 came to life . One of them from previous year which I had forgotten to dig it out is back to life.

I love Dahlias so do u recommend taking the tuber out of ground, amending the soil wit potting soil and then again back to ground . Do u think my tuber has died? I planted after frost around May . 5 weeks now
@TONYAwiththeflowers3 жыл бұрын
I would definitely consider carefully digging around the tubers to see what's going on. As long as the weather has been warm, most of them should have probably sprouted by now. Good luck!

Your dahlias are gorgeous. I remember my mother talking about her father growing "dinner plate dahlias." Is that a thing?

Yes! Dinnerplate dahlias have some of the biggest flower blooms that I've ever seen!

Dahlias are best grown in lines and they really need support dont they. I didnt grow mine with supports last year and the flower stems grew all crooked .

Hi I have a question.. What do you do when your dahlia tuber has 4 plus sprouts - should I thin it out and leave only 1 or 2? Thank you for your informative videos.
@TONYAwiththeflowers3 жыл бұрын
Hi there! More sprouts from the tuber mean that the plant will have more main stems as it continues to grow. This is a result of the tuber having several viable eyes, rather than just one. As long as it's staked well, the bigger plant will likely produce more flowers. Good luck! :)
@peony19843 жыл бұрын
@@TONYAwiththeflowers I was just worried about overcrowding the plant and maybe increasing it’s risk of powdery mildew. (One of my tuber even has 6 sprouts) More flowers sounds good to me! Thank you :)
