I’m from Naples and to everyone saying that this is fake, you’re wrong, they’re real thieves. Offering a coffee or a dinner is a sign of respect for us, and we’re also very emotional people, that “You make them laugh, I make them cry” part was really touching because it really emphasise how they’re just people like us, they just ended up in a bad phase of their lives. If anyone has anything to ask feel free to comment Much love from Naples 💕💕 Don’t be afraid to visit this beautiful city

This really is beautiful. It's the truest expression of cultural exchange. Two entirely different types of people, brought together by their love and proficiency at a rare and transgressive skill, laughing and sharing and exchanging techniques. Of course pickpockets in Naples were going to get better after this. It was inevitable. It was also inevitable that Bob was going to get better. He's taking some of what he learned and applying it on the stage. They are taking some of what they learned and applying it on the street. That's fair. The most beautiful moment was actually where for a brief time Bob got to feel the fear of doing this "for real," and the "real" got to feel a bit of what Bob does- stealing for an audience, showing off your skills, and getting to do it without shame, or risk of jail. That was a true cultural exchange. And if a few more people in Naples get their wallets or Gucci belts snatched, that's evolution.

The guy that Bob finally met, was probably the best pickpocket alive today; and he knows it and takes pride in his craft. Even Bob said, he never felt a thing when the guy first took his poke. The guy has the smoothest hands for a cannon. Bob shouldn't feel ashamed at not wanting to go through with dipping into somebody's kick. That is a normal and honest feeling that most people share. These guys are street guys that have been doing this racket for years as a means for survival in a very hard world. What struck me is the revelation of Bob finally meeting the master of his trade and Bob's admiration of his very skilled, acquired vocation. Bob does this as a form of entertainment. These guys are practitioners of their trade, real-life criminals. It's like what the master dipper said toward the end of the documentary. "Bob, in your show in Las Vegas, you make the people laugh, whereas I make them cry." How very profound!
@voornaam3191 Жыл бұрын
This master pickpocket is the quality Roald Dahl meant, when he wrote the short story The Hitch-hiker. That genius pickpocket stole the notebook of the police officer, who had written down name, addrress, car model, license plate, speed when speeding, where that happened. Like it never happened. Problem solved. kzbin.info/www/bejne/i2rTenecdr6Mrq8

A word on our sweaty shirts seems to be in order, since many of you comment on this. Hey-this was a documentary! As in, reality! It was 90-some degrees during the shooting and often nerve-wracking. Hey-we were among criminals! Wearing hidden cameras! Our shirts were wired up with button cameras and microphones, so we couldn’t change them often, even though we had two identical shirts apiece. We also used a mix of POV cameras, like the very first GoPro, which were hidden in purses, guidebooks, and other things you might see us carry in the film. We also used eyeglass cameras and iPhone video. Our crew used two larger camera: a Red, and the old Canon 5D. Sometimes you can see a flash of these in the film. BTW, these very experienced thieves did not learn any new tricks at our dinner that would further their trade. What they know today they have learned over decades of daily practice. There’s nothing a stage pickpocket from Las Vegas could offer them. This film actually makes the pickpockets’ work more difficult. Take yourself (and the millions of other viewers). You watched the whole documentary, right? Now you know how pickpockets work. Think they can pull their tricks on you? I bet not!

That dinner table scene was really something special. Having two sides of the same coin, despite their line of work, sit down and just enjoy a meal together is a rare and enviable feat. Despite the fact that they steal from others, that they express remorse towards doing so only educates people in that life is not always as black and white as most moral and legal authorities would have you believe. That despite a person's tough exterior, they have a heart beating in their chest just like us and that we all share more than we realize.

Thanks - every few months or so somebody believes these guys are actors. Not so. Charming yes, and different to pickpockets in the rest of Europe, but all have served time. We appreciate your suspicion, because it means you are impressed and jump to a conclusion "they must be actors." Of all the thieves you see in this documentary, only one has aspiration to move on and become an actor. That is not easy in Italy, with a record. Read The Making of Pickpocket King here: bobarno.com/thiefhunters/bob-arno-pickpocket-king-national-geographic-documentary/ I had wanted for over ten years to have these guys meet up together and show their chops. Only in Naples do you find pickpockets TODAY who can exhibit and do the riffling move on the inside of the pants lining.

Are they rich/poor? I mean, Angelo is apparently the most skilled pickpocket in the world, surely he has to be quite rich? Yet it seems as if many of them wants to quit as soon as they have enough money.
@BobArnoOfficial10 жыл бұрын
KingThiazzi Now that’s a good question. Very few pickpockets anywhere are wealthy. Some, in their prime make a lot of money, around US$150,000-200,000 a year but nearly always piss it away, or have a habit. Unless you know what to do with “the spread” you won’t be able to max out the cards, and it’s getting harder by the day with new security features on cards. Some European pickpockets, and Angelo is not one of them, target wealthy people and make more. They are the exception. Napoli is not exactly a center of wealthy tourists or locals using public transportation. Yes, Angelo has superb technique (and "chops") but he has a poor pool of victims, and no way of working outside his domain (for many reasons, and that's a different post). He is stuck!

+TheBadGuy You touched on a problem all across Europe when arresting a diversion thief. Usually, but not in all cities, you need a victim to report the theft and an arresting officer who saw what happened, and will testify that he saw the hand of the thief extract-not just attempt to extract-the wallet or purse. Exception: some tourist destinations, like Munich with its Octoberfest will arrest any thief who even attempts to steal, without the need for a victim to testify. Which is why, at these events, huge numbers of pickpockets are arrested over a ten day period. In some jurisdictions camera surveillance holds up in court.

To those who suggest avoiding Italy: Yes, Italy, be it Florence, Rome, or Naples, has lots of pickpocketing. Other large metropolitan European cities have similar numbers. We are fond of Italy as a travel destination, and consider it as safe as most other European countries. With simple precautions, you shouldn’t be pickpocketed while visiting Italy. Much of the world is more hostile today. Travelers need to understand where the threats are, and the typical crimes that can take place in their chosen destinations. So, do your homework in advance. Being pickpocketed can totally destroy a trip. All your money, maybe passport, phone, and camera gone in one horrible instant when you did not quite pay attention, didn’t really have your antennas up, and your guard was down. But pickpocketing is not a physically brutal crime. It is not a mugging, it is not an express kidnapping, it is not rape, or worse. Some other popular travel destinations have higher violent crime statistics than Italy does. It comes down to “traveler beware!” Shifting some of the responsibility over to the individual, just as hacking is now an issue of what to click and not to click in your incoming emails, and your health is a matter of annual check-ups and lifestyle choices. In fact “Traveler Beware” should be the mantra today for every tourist who chooses to leave his or her own cocoon of home security to plan a trip.

You guys have lots of weird assumptions and questions about the pickpockets in Naples and this film. Are they still working the streets? Why have the police not arrested them? Are they angry about the impact of the documentary? Some of you also wonder if it’s safe for me to return to Napoli now that the film has around five million views globally (in various language versions). Pickpockets dislike teamwork because they don’t trust their partners. It’s all about the snitch culture, and not trusting team members if one gets caught. Yet, they’re more likely to succeed when working in a pair or team of three. They certainly don’t need to collaborate as they all know the same moves, learned as children or teenagers and perfected over many years. It’s difficult to arrest a skillful pickpocket because they have spotters whose sole assignment is to watch for undercover cops; and in any case, a good thief can usually “smell” an undercover cop. Jail sentences are rare and always brief, since pickpocketing is a non-violent crime and the prisons are full of more serious criminals. So they’re right back out on the street, back to their usual occupation. And yes, many pickpockets recognize me because of this film -- they’ve seen one version or another -- and give me the finger if they spot me-or a high-five. The belt steal, a theatrical stunt, is not applicable in the real world. Pickpockets do not talk to their victims before an extraction, versus a stage pickpocket who distracts with dialog and mumbo-jumbo chatter. If you want more precise understanding of the world of street pickpockets, see our blog at www.thiefhunters.com

AMWF You’re laughing at the fact that a man’s wearing sunglasses in the middle of summer in southern Italy. The actual reason both him and his wife are wearing a very dark tint of sunglasses is because they need to be able to keep their eyes on their bag or pocket so they can spot the technique used by the thief without tipping them off by letting them see that they’re looking right at them.

Bob, thanks to you I developed a skill of pickpocketing of my own :) I will do as you do in my school! I have already pick pocketed multiple people, with items such as phones, wallets, pens, money, student ID's, etc. Though, I plan not on keeping them, as I have given the items back immediately. What I plan on doing is reporting this issue with my principle so he can review the tapes from the cameras in the hallways. I plan on making the students in my school more aware of pickpocketing with them seeing how I do so in the hallways. I'm sure they'll be thankful! :D Cheers! (I go to school in New York btw.
