I love this. All I ever did was diet, my mom put me on a diet when I was 5. When my husband and I were trying to have a kid I couldn't get pregnant, even with IVF treatment. Doctors couldn't figure out why since my cycle was normal. Found intuitive eating, not only did my temperament get better (i mean, whose in a good mood when your constantly hungry)but the first time in my life I had a healthy relationship with food, never thought it would happened. Gained some weight, didn't care bc this was the best I ever felt and six months later after 3 years of trying, i got pregnant naturally. 8 months pregnant now ❤️ lol sorry, this is just my story.

I just wanted to say thank you so much for this video. My mom has spent the last 6 years dieting, doing cosmetic procedures, and taking medication that she can't even legally buy in attempts to lose weight. I sent her this last month and she got so excited, I think it was the first time someone actually told her that it's ok to eat what she wants. She bought the audiobook and even printed the guide for herself and she seems so much happier than she was before. Yesterday, I saw her eat her first slice of cheesecake without looking sad and disappointed or consumed by guilt. I almost cried with happiness. Truly, thank you.

Thank you Sadia. I’m only 23 but I have been an overeater as long as I can remember. I do have a really unbalanced diet, a sweet tooth that something even disgusts me, and a feeling of shame that I always carry with me - especially when meeting new people at work or in my house in general. I don’t know what brought me to this, I just know that I’m always craving junk eating at the point Im feeling sick and regret it after. Only few months ago I realized how serious it is getting, I’m only slightly overweight but I see it could become worse if I don’t do anything to change it soon. I will give a try to this, it’s the only thing I’m missing to try to solve this problem, thanks for sharing this topic with us. In case it will work I will be forever grateful - in case not, I will have to seek for medical advice. But thank you so much.

@@terrabear4093 I eat a completely WFPB diet, so no oils or sugars, but what changed for me was the mindset. I don't restrict anything of what I eat - i.e. I eat dates/nuts until as much as I want to. But the mindset shift is that I no longer see sugar or oil as food, just as I don't see dairy as food for me anymore. If this helps at all :)

You have so flawlessly managed to get the message reach people asusual with so much of warmth and kindness. Feeling peaceful. 🥰 I'm so glad that my parents told me at my young age to have food when you are hungry and not to postpone it because then you will have anything that you have got on hand. I have such a shit relationship with food, I'm literally scared of calories and it is the first thing that comes to my head before and after i eat anything, I eat a very healthy vegetarian diet, and I rarely eat unhealthy food but, most unhealthy foods I've come to not even like anymore. im sometimes weeks skipping some meals and obsessively counting calories, drinking a lot of tea, coffee, water to reduce hunger, have the need to go to the gym for un least 40 min every day or I feel like shit. And then start motivating myself to improve the relationship and i start eating more (3 healthy meals a day and a snack) and I do that for a few weeks and then i feel like i have gained weight and i want to loose wait, so the process repeats itself. i hate the feeling that I can never eat anything without thinking about the calories it has. i wish i could have a healthy relationship with food and body image

Luz Ottone I am very sorry to hear that. I’m just a stranger on the internet and I don’t mean to overstep but to me it sounds like you might skirt the edges of an eating disorder. I know gaining weight is something we are taught to be a bad thing but I have read several sources recently who said that every body has its own ideal weight and that’s what it will return to if you don’t over- or undereat. So maybe you gaining weight after skipping meals just means that your body is trying to go back to the weight it’s meant to be at. (Sorry if this is too personal or making you feel uncomfortable, if so please let me know and I will delete this comment)

Someone I could recommend watching would be Stephanie Buttermore (on KZbin). She was very lean for many years, competed in bodybuilding etc, basically the physique a lot of people want to have. About a year ago she completely changed her approach (due to health problems and extreme hunger) and started eating just however much she felt like, gained a lot of weight and already lost some of it again and is on track to a really healthy weight and relationship with food. At least for me it really helped, I went through a similar process and struggled with food for a long time until I did something similar and decided to trust my body. Using Stephanie as an example though because she has it documented. I truly hope that you find peace with food, it takes time and it's honestly hard, but it's absolutely worth it. After tracking calories for many years and constantly obsessing over food, intuitive eating is the best decision I could've made. And after some initial fluctuation it did put me at a normal healthy weight, where I have so much energy and rediscovered that I actually enjoy sports a lot more if I don't care about the calories burned.

Hey, I don't know your age but speaking so someone you trust about your eating disorder is very very important. That doesn't have to be a parent, but some other trust-person of yours that may help you figuring a way out to cope with this. When I was a teen I had an eating disorder too and getting therapy (which got me overcoming it) was only possible with talking to my parents. Without knowing your relationship to your parents I would generally think, that they only want the best for you, being happy and healthy! Eating disorders are so much more than problems with food, so the solution is often found elsewhere too. Wish you all the best :)

I rarely comment on KZbin videos, but am coming out of hiding to say one thing: Reading Tribole and Resch's book on Intuitive Eating was truly life-changing for me. I completely understand that many may be very skeptical of an intuitive eating approach or think this isn't for them, but I would encourage those skeptics to check out the book or any other materials from Tribole and Resch. The book cites numerous studies that support this approach to nutrition and, frankly, offers the most compelling health advice I have ever encountered (and there is a lot of confusing health advice out there!). I was also surprised to learn that even though intuitive eating sounds super new and trendy, it has actually been around since 1995! If you have ever experienced feelings of guilt, shame, or fear when it comes to eating, I highly recommend this book. Thanks for this video, Sadia! And I hope this video helps someone heal their relationship with food!

I've never eaten unhealthily, nor do I have an illness which complicates my alimentation, but for a couple of years, I always ate 'low-carb', 'low-fat' and so on. Personally, diets really annoy me by now. Food can be the greatest thing in life because of all the reasons you mention in your video. The most important thing is to enjoy and respect it. Sadly, many people are so poor they are not able to eat. We should not view food overly critical all the time, as this would be unfair. Thank you for your inspirational content! I wish i could like this video a millllion times. I keep coming back to it over and over again. Every time i feel like I’m getting roped into some new diet, I come back here. I started following intuitive eating when i watched this video a couple of years back and the chips vs fruit scenario happened to me. Like you, I realised I just didn’t feel like having chips at all and all I wanted was some fresh strawberries. It’s been a couple of years and we always have chips and cookies in our pantry but after following what you highlight in the video and taking the power away from them, I’ve maybe reached for them 2-3 times in a YEAR! What I always end up choosing instead is some cold, crisp, juicy fruit. Thank you for having such a huge impact on my life. I’m so grateful for it! After 10 years of struggling with food, I am finally at peace with it. ❤

I haven't heard of intuitive eating before. It's given me a lot to think about. I love the word nourish. I want to be healthy in mind, body and spirit. I do have an unhealthy relationship with food, body image issues and depression. I have no thyroid gland or gall bladder. I'm 35, overweight and struggle to tie my shoes or even put my socks on. This video came at a perfect time Sadia. It brought me to tears. I could go to the pantry and reach for some food and drown my sorrows but my stomach is comfortably nourished until breakfast. (It's 10pm right now).

Another thing I always notice in your videos is presentation -even the cookie gets put on a pretty plate. I think it really helps to appreciate food more. I've eaten standing up out of the package, and it definitely isn't as enjoyable as sitting down and actually taking my time. Thank you for all you do!

Well done. A much needed message in an age where YT videos on diet and losing weight have taken over for decades of damaging self help magazine articles/headlines helped by idolized photo shopped/hyper disciplined models and celebrities (under pressure to sell their body/soul) driving constant cycles of guilt/indulgence. At 52 I finally learned to trust myself and body a few yrs ago and that we’re meant to be whole not perfect. Im a student vs a follower and vegan plant based for life. Again bravo and thank you for teaching and inspiring common sense, self love and respect.

This is the best video on eating I've ever seen. I thought I'm a healthy eater however I now realize that my relationship with food is ridiculous and stressful as I'm constantly forbidding myself to eat what I actually want. It's so important to eat foods that our body loves and not always follow certain diets as they simply might not work for us. For example for years I was eating only wholewheat breads that are quite hard to digest for me but I was constantly hearing that white bread is bad so I wouldn't dare to touch it. Turned out my belly is too sensitive and eating a white loaf from a good bakery will be easier to digest for me and won't cause stomach pain later...

Hello love! First of all: It's so amazing of you to admit that you are unhappy with your relationship with food and that you need help. I can't tell you how much that first step has helped me in my own life and how important it is to have a professional guide you through your journey when you're re-learning how to be and love yourself. Depending on where you live, there are many great resources for getting help with an ED. Have you tried speaking to your parents about this? It can feel embarrassing at first, but your parents can be a great support for finding the person or people (a specialized psychologist or doctor) that will help you regain self-love and a healthy relationship with food. Also, search the web for support numbers in your area. Some of these have online chat options if you feel insecure talking on the phone (I certainly used to). They can point you in the right direction and sometimes even connect you with the right specialists for you. You don't have to do this alone - and honestly, I think it's incredibly important not to. Reach out, don't lose your courage - I promise there is someone out there that can and will help! Sending so much love your way!

I have never dieted but I am disabled and for many years, because I couldn't cook for myself, I was not able to eat enough food or keep my weight up. I'm now living with a partner who was pressured into dieting almost their whole life, but started down a different path as they got into veganism, and we are (despite our somewhat different dietary needs) relearning intuitive eating together. Thank you for this! I really appreciate your clear, compassionate approach to food and I am inspired to be more intentional and kind in listening to my body.

Hey - I love your videos, they've really helped me to take control over my eating habits and introduced me to some incredible recipes and ideas, so thanks so much! :) I also wanted to say that INTUITIVE EATING IS NOT FOR EVERYONE. I read Intuitive Eating and at first I thought that my life had been totally changed. I started paying more attention to my levels of hunger and fullness which was great. Then I filled my cupboards with the foods I had been bingeing on for years and I ate as much as I could. The next day I woke up and ate as much as I could. Over the next few weeks, sometimes I fancied fruit or something healthier but more often than not I'd binge on the foods, thinking I was finally allowing myself to be free from their trap by giving in until the forbidden side of it wore off. This never happened, I put on around 2 stone and was bingeing more than ever. I don't know if I have a sugar addiction, a food addiction, am an emotional eater, pure binge eater or a combination of all of these things but it just didn't work for me at all. Any time I passed a bakery I'd let myself buy three donuts, any time I went past the shop I'd let myself buy whatever I wanted and although it usually meant fruit and veg too, it was also always lots of chocolate and crisps and sweets, none of which I seemed to be able to have the same control over in terms of my fullness levels, which I could with a nutritional meal/snack. My body/taste buds, whatever it was latched on to the sugar/salt/fat and I piled on the pounds and spent a small fortune on what I thought was investing in a future where I was finally free of my addictions/bingeing. I don't know what would have happened had I continued on for another few months and if I would have eventually stopped wanting to binge/overeat these processed foods full of sugar and additives, but I really doubt it. To be honest the part about intuitive eating that tells you there's no difference between an apple and a donut is how a lot of people with morbid obesity treat food. If you're so far out of the binge/diet cycle that you've just been overeating processed and fatty foods for years then this advice basically tells you what you're currently doing is fine and you'll eventually not crave those foods anymore. So why didn't all the people on my 600 pound life eventually stop bingeing and start eating those foods in moderation? Addiction doesn't work like that. I think for a lot of people it very much is promoting a junk food lifestyle and telling them not to have any guilt about it without taking into consideration how out of wack you become when you constantly eat these types of foods for years and they are quite literally killing you. There are absolutely no health benefits to the processed crap I was bingeing on, it was just my choice of drug to help me cope with my feelings of depression/inadequacy rather than cocaine or alcohol. I do think we should be letting ourselves have a treat now and then but in terms of filling our cupboards full of these awful foods - and that's what they are - there's no way you could convince me that a bag of Doritos/M&Ms with all those additives and E numbers are not awful for you, I just don't think it's a good idea for everyone, certainly not those who deal with food/sugar addiction and those who are very overweight.

I can see where you're coming from. I think that intuitive eating, as much as I know about it, is a practice in tuning into the subtle sensations of the body (as with meditation) and distinguishing emotional impulses from intuition, to manage them in a more balanced way. I feel like balance is really key here, just as an instrument needs to be well-tuned, with a bit of tension but not too much. Also, inner-work is necessary, especially with food disorders and unhealthy tendencies (I'm fully in it here, really not easy). Just a few thoughts...

I agree with the “no forbidden foods” mentality. It has helped me so much, where I used to eat the whole bag of chips, I’m now good with a handful. A whole chocolate bar is now a couple squares. I also find myself more in the mood for fruits when I crave sweets and have started exploring different choices other than just bananas and apples, like kiwi and oranges and plums

this is the best explanation of intuitive eating i have ever seen. before watching this video, i thought intuitive eating was something only people without eating disorders could identify with. i thought i had messed up my body's signals so much that it wouldn't even work. the hunger/fullness scale is so helpful because i used to be able to make myself hungry or full, but now my brain automatically gravitates towards a number because numbers are always in my head so i can stick with what im feeling instead of thinking "my stomach is full but i want to eat more so that means im still hungry". There is so much truth in that concept. I was on an All inclusive vacation two years ago and i told myself that i can eat there whatever i wanted. First maybe 5 days i tended to overeat with cakes and fries. But later on i started to enjoy the awesome spanish fruits, veggies and paellas much more. As a result i lost dome weight😅😍 i love you, Sadia. You introduced me to veganism 2 tears ago and it changed my life. 😊

These concepts are a welcome reminder for me. I occassionally cycle in and out of processed sugar cravings. What I've allowed myself is the opportunity to indulge when the urge predents itself. I notice that I have occasionally had to forcefully stop because the indulging cycle was too long to be considrred healthy. Intuitive Eating doesn't always work for those of us who've suffered from eating disorders or severe weight gain. I've found that purposefully planning meals is a must. This has kept me my healthiest, overall.

My personal journey with food was early on like a roller coaster ride but I've learnt a lot along the way. I've come to the conclusion that we eat to feel full as opposed to eat to feel satisfied and I think this type of thinking stems back to a time when people didn't know where their next meal would be coming from, so you stuffed yourself full every time you found food. We associate eating with feeling full where really what we should be doing is associating it with that point when we no longer feel hungry.

The book, which I read a long while ago, also emphasizes asking yourself how you physically feel when you eat certain foods. That chocolate doughnut loses its appeal to me when I realize how the sugar feels on my teeth, and how the energy burst/crash isn't serving me. And it does set me up for craving more of the same, which may not be the case for everyone. If I eat sugar, it's so much harder to eat it in moderation even though I know it doesn't feel great afterward. It just becomes 10 times harder to resist - the opposite of how habituation is supposed to work, as in the example with the chips. I can do chips that way; I can't do sugar that way. I guess that's what an addiction feels like?

Oh Sadia, you got me crying! My relationship with food was always very problematic and the only time I managed to lose weight was when I got the most depressed. So people kept telling me how pretty I was without acknowledging how sad and hopeless that moment was. Which unleashed this loop of beauty=sadness X ugly=happiness. This video is exactly where I needed to land right now when I finally understood that I want to be happy, healthy and feel pretty (doesn't matter how my body looks). Thanks a lot!

Interestingly, as I've been swinging to extremes diet-wise again...and my weight is UP due to it...I glanced down to see one of my cats eating and had an "Ah ha!" moment. Then I saw this video that confirmed it. Watching Chakra eat, and then drink some water, I noticed that both of my cats eat when hungry...and only until comfortable. They can not think about food for hours and hours. Some days they eat more, some days less. They follow hunger queues. They don't eat if happy or bored or sad. They don't eat by the clock. They are intuitive eaters!

I am amazed at my toddler's intuition around food. We talk about his belly voice and what it tells him. He stops when he is full and asks for food when hungry. Even at a birthday party, he chose some party foods but also had veggies and hummus, crackers and fruit 🤷‍♀️ I am often eating when I am a 0 on the hunger scale because I look after the kids first (3yr old and 12 week old) and then get to the afternoon and realise I haven't eaten myself.

I have practiced intuitive eating most of my adult life. For me this is always vegan 90% unprocessed Whole Foods, as much my body craves. My intention is to feel energetic and full. One benefit is that I have never had a weight problem or major illness at 50+ years old. I easily get 13K steps per day. I watch some of my friends struggle with diets that sabotage their health and happiness. Intuitive clean eating is a lifestyle, not a fad diet. Your video was aesthetically beautiful and informative.

I just wanted to say to anyone who is struggling with losing weight, this is an excellent video. Intuitive eating is really important and if you were anything like me you had completely lost you ability to listen to your bodies intuition. When i first started i had no idea, i feel like what my body was telling me as hunger was not the same as what other people are describing, it was realy hard for me. The process of learning to do it is painfully slow, you gotta keep putting in the effort, really listen to what your body is saying, maybe if youre the kind of person to journal you can journal it, would be a great idea (im not a journaler lol) but it wasnt until i spoke to a woman at a gym about my weightloss journey that i realised how much change i had been through over the last few years, because its happening on such a small scale and i was working on it everyday i lost sight of any progress i had made, it was a chore but when i talked to her about my eating habbits before to now, it was a really shocking moment to see how much i really had improved. Another thing i did want to say as well, the only weightloss advise i give anyone is see a professional. Before i got my weightloss surgery i had seen a my doctor, a dietitian, a PT (gym) and even a psychologist. I did end up finding out i had an eating disorder and it became even more aparent after i had my surgery. there is so much misinformation out there because the weightloss industry is a trillion dollar predatory industry that benefits from people being ignorant about weightloss and gaslights everyone into thinking they cant lose weight because theyre lazy or they lack self control. Most of the time there are other reasons you cant stick to a diet that is out of your control and a professional can help you. See your family doctor, start a plan. Do not let yourself suffer alone or let weightloss take over your life
