I was listening to a podcast that said, “it’s important to live life by design rather than emotion. Basically, sticking to a routine is what allows us to be the healthiest version of ourselves (especially when you're fighting these demons ex. OCD for me). What’s worked for me is practising mediocre consistency. Now I try to put in consistent 40-60% effort into my habits (ex. journaling/working out) - to make sure I do it I began recording it and posting it on my youtube channel. Because historically I have a habit of going too hard, not being able to sustain the Herculean effort, giving up and hating myself. So now I’m trying to give a small-ish, consistent mediocre effort everyday. And its crazy how it adds up.

Mediocre consistency - love it!
@justinsheldon5887 Жыл бұрын
I’ve heard something similar before that really resonated with me: consistency trumps intensity. I use that phrase when I feel like I’ve done the minimum on something or in some way did less than my best. It helps me to turn something that could be taken negatively into something positive and motivating.

I love love love this idea! After struggling for years to find the perfect habits or the perfect routine, I recently started trying to be content with less, and it's life-changing even if sometimes it feels slow.

I love the idea of mediocre consistency. In some ways, this reminds me of Atomic Habits, I listened on audio more than once. It was really eye opening that it's not about the Herculean effort as you say, but the smaller things add up.

Summary for my own notes. Here are some good daily habits: 1) Add buffers in planning 2) At the end of the day, take 5 minutes to make a small todo list for tomorrow. That way you stop thinking about unfinished tasks. 3) Gratitude journal

What do you mean by adding buffers? Could you explain, please?

It's kind of amazing to find you are so 'normal' like talking about mental problems we have in every day life, because it always seems like you are so together, successful and beautiful, and it's the rest of us that have problems, not people like you.

This video is one of these reasons why PUL is so special. The content is so thoughtful and packed with value - it's really about habits for success but the approach is so practical and honestly different than most yt video you see on the same topic. Really awesome to watch, Sadia. I've been struggling with the 1st buas a lot at work and your tip really helped me see things in a new way - I'm trying it next week (might even give you an update if it works!)

Thank you so much, Sadia ❤️ I love these videos about habits/life and they help me a lot, even while watching I already feel more focused and inspired! I already use the strategy of moving incomplete tasks to the next day's To Do list so I can wind down for the evening and it really helps. In fact, writing daily and weekly To Do lists on my phone's notes completely changed the game for me: I feel less anxious because I don't have to remember everything all the time - I can just check and tick it off as I go - and I see all the small victories to give me a feeling of achievement, instead of falsely assuming I haven't done anything, like before. Your channel always helps me to want to become a better/happier person 🤗

Love this. I relate to the 'getting all the urgent but non-important stuff done' then not having time to get the important stuff done situation. I sometimes liken this to 'big rocks, small stones'... if you fill your jar with he big rocks first (all the important stuff) then it's easy to add the small stones in after as they fall in and around the big rocks, but if you fill the jar with the small stones first, the big rocks don't fit!

I love Andy's voice, too! And in general I love headspace. I have been using it for 4 years or something. And although I'm not always consistent on meditation itself, their sleep section is amazing. I have trouble falling asleep sometimes or even waking up in the night and their sleep casts just take away the pressure of not being able to sleep and just to listen something that calms you down. I think my favorite exercise are the breathing exercises, they really help when I feel like I have excess energy in my body like anxiety or just a restless mind. It's not the cheapest, however, if you're a student you can get a huge discount which is what I did this year :)

This is all incredibly useful advice; the skills mentioned have been valuable in my career. To add on a bit to what Sadia said: Urgent vs important: This is not something I was good at in high school and college, so I cannot emphasize enough that this is a skill you can learn! My preferred method for prioritization is to ask, "What are the consequences if this doesn't get done?" -- both of myself and of the people asking me to do something urgently. That might not work for you, so think on it yourself and look for other advice. Time blocking: I get tunnel vision and go down research rabbit holes, so I find time blocking most useful for stopping myself from spending too much time on a task. It's a chance for me to take a step back and review what I've accomplished, then re-evaluate the priority for what remains. Should I continue, now or later? Do I need to get a second opinion on anything? Have I been keeping relevant notes? Zeigarnik Effect section + negativity bias: EOD (end-of-day) curation is another habit that's been incredibly helpful to my career in two aspects: (1) Preparing an EOD status report: It's something that I have to do anyways, but the process of reviewing my accomplishments -- or lack thereof -- both provides career satisfaction and helps me do a better job of prioritizing tasks going forward. (2) Migrating tasks to tomorrow: Migration is a chance to re-prioritize, and my morning goes better when I arrive at the office and find my rollover tasks already migrated to the new day. I highly recommend checking the bullet journaling communities on reddit -- r/BasicBulletJournals and r/bulletjournal. Bullet journaling is not for everyone, but both communities have diverse members with equally diverse advice on how to approach productivity problems.
