KesselRunner I am a third generation GM truck owner. I am pissed off at GM for not offering the regular cab SWB truck for sale in the U.S. What kind of idiots are in charge of GM now days? Hilux is almost built and ready for our trip with our new vario and sprinter vans, the Silverado is waiting for a Sierra RCSB, my wifes waiting, so we can build together and cruise this summer. First time no kids riding shotgun, our kids all have their own trucks too, so should be fun! I never understood why GM didnt offer it anymore stateside, kinda dumb.

With the GM trucks, there is a problem with the front nose of the truck. It barely has enough ground clearance to pull out of a driveway. It only has an approach angle of 19 degrees, so the first thing you have to do after buying a new truck is to go out and buy and have installed a lift kit. Common, that is ridiculous. GM, you can't go over a speed bump, much less take the truck off road.

In my opinion I think it’s silly to have a single cab AND a short bed. That’s like a double negative. If you’re gonna sacrifice rear doors your mag as well make up for it with a long ass bed… 2 door short beds also just look funky to me.

The wax coating is the problem. Once the oxygen and humidity hit the metal oxidation starts. Then once you cover it the oxidation is self propagating. Example: a cold frame, for garden plant, keeps condensing every night even if they are not opened. The GM solution is the problem.

CAFE is based on gross vehicle weight. Standard cab and short bed trucks still have higher GVW than cars so CAFE isn't as big of issue as consumer demand. Outside of maybe fleet buyers, there isn't much demand. Consumers like using trucks like the cars they displaced. 4 doors are in demand. Short bed and standard cabs are less so. Short bed crew cabs sell. Short bed standard cabs don't.

Nice video, but I don't buy the CAFE reason for the standard cab short bed issue, the long bed standard cab is still sold, and that footprint is only 2 feet longer... It's because they don't sell AS much so not as much profit, and it's all about profit I get that. But it would be really nice if they would bring back these trucks in a base model for modding and a SS model for those who prefer to buy not build. With a min of the 6.2 to reduce the need to engine swap.

Re hybrids, Ford F150 does have the powerboost which is a full hybrid and has all the payload, towing, even better acceleration and with much better mileage (esp city) than a stock F150. So, kinda negates your argument hybrids don't really work in the truck segment. Id like to see Chevy do a real hybrid not a light hybrid in the full size truck segment. Maybe even a diesel hybrid...

I think there's still a market for the regular cab, short bed truck. There's still two segments of buyers, in my opinion. One set of buyers are those who want a daily driver truck. They're looking for something for 2 to 3 passengers at max. Some others want something for a hot rod. Both pick a short bed because a long bed is just kind of impractical. Dropping the reg. cab, short bed could be counter-productive.

I’d rather have E coating with the boxed frames. Cars don’t rot because water hits metal, they rot when water sits on metal. Or from chemicals, or salt. That’s why lower doors and trunks and even frames. They rot from the inside, not from a scratch that dries. Ford has always had a thicker metal also, and that helps. There will always oddballs that rot out. The Zr2 Frame might have done what it was supposed to but it seemed to do it awful easily. Unless he was lying about how he was driving. The GM thing is a who do you believe. The biggest problem I have with GM isn’t the $8 billion they needed it was the $55 billion they took and kept. They also let or had to let Obamas crew run the company and with that they screwed so many people out of what was owed. The Money they took was only part of it, they screwed all the stock holders. My friend lost almost $10k when they changed the stock. The only people that didn’t get screwed was the unions. They are still living on that money. It’s a huge advantage for them and those BS commercials they ran saying they paid all their money back early was a flat out lie.
@Pickuptrucktalk
@Pickuptrucktalk 4 жыл бұрын
Sure rot is caused by the elements sitting on the metal. My point with the scrape is it is easier for rust to form with the metal is exposed. And yeah, the ZR2 driver was certainly driving way faster than he should have been driving with that trailer.

The frame issue has to do more with GM frames as in Colorado canyon bending TO EASY.... I pull a travel trailer that is 6000 lbs and a tongue wt of 700 lbs. I hit a dip in the road on the highway and it bottomed out very hard. I now notice a difference in the gap between the bed and the cab. They are badly designed frames. Bar none..... What I don’t understand is why companies can’t get through there greedy heads that if you build a quality product customers will buy. Time to wake up to reality. Build your vehicle with the low binder and you will pay the price in the end...

Great stuff. I like the tech details. On a side note, in 2009 headrest changed, they became taller and some time tilted forward. This is to prevent whiplash. I think you know all this already but i need to smart so I will just write it down. Head rest came to be to stop people from breaking there necks when rear ended. decades of studies later, i think mostly by Volvo, they released they could prevent whiplash by doing two things. Year head can not be more than inch away from the head rest. If you draw a line from center of your ears, to back of your head, the head rest can not be lower than that. and now back to the program everyone wanted.

GM did hybrid fullsize SUVs 10 years ago. Hybrids shine in the city mpg. The regular 5.3 did 14 mpg city and the hybrid did 21 mpg city. The HWY figure only saw a 2 mpg difference - 20 mpg vs 22 mpg. Although the city mpg was actually a HUGE 50% improvement, part of the problem is the mpg method does not show this well enough. This is why metric countries use liters per 100km which makes comparing efficiency easier to understand. Going from 14 to 21 mpg is the equivalent of 16.8 to 11.2 L/100km. A 5.6 L reduction in fuel used in 100 km of driving. Lets say you improve again by 7 mpg, from 21 to 28 mpg. That's 11.2 to 8.4 L/100km. Only a 2.8 L reduction in fuel use. 50% less improvement in efficiency than going from 14 to 21 mpg. In both cases Americans see a 7 mpg improvement and treat them relatively the same, while the L/100 km method shows the real story. We could easily go to gallons per 100 miles to fix this. This is also why sweating over the difference in mpg for more efficient cars is mostly pointless. The actual fuel savings between 35 mpg and 40 mpg is very small. TLDR: The GM hybrid trucks provided huge increases in city MPG but know one cared because the numerical mpg improvements were too small to understand the real impact. Americans also care more about HWY mpg where there was no significant MPG improvement.

The thing about a million mile truck without rust on the frame, is that they are not hard miles. So it hasn't been exposed to the elements for 80 years. If someone puts a million on in 8-10 years its perfectly reasonable that it could have a clean chassis. Its has only been exposed to that many winters. One of the things I really like about my F-150 is that you don't need the screen for hardly anthing. If they'd add a physical home button and allow you to cycle through preset sources instead of every single one it would be about perfect. I'm fine with somewhat larger screens, as they are nice for navigation and such, but only if they maintain large physical buttons that are easy to use with gloves on. Touch interfaces and menu layers for frequently used functions should be outlawed. Seriously. Honda does it probably the worst of anybody, they don't even give you a volume knob and it still runs on Android 4.1 which dates back to 2012. On top of that, it's not even large. Terrible.

Increasing tie rod size to an adequate level would add an insignificant amount of weight. It's a valid concern and question that addresses a weak point to GM heavy duty suspension especially. Your answer about "Chevy has been using independent suspension for 50 years" is misleading at best. Chevy also used solid axles until I believe up into the 90's on its R/V legacy series. Your statement that tie rod breakage is a result of overloading your vehicle is way oversimplified and off target. I have seen tie rods break and bend on empty trucks on very mild off-road trails. Look the aftermarket exists to address these inadequacies. IFS can be made to be sufficiently strong, the military Humvee is an example. GM took the IFS route on it's HD trucks many years ago and that's their prerogative. But in my opinion and others who actually own these set ups Tie rods and CV axles are a joke at best when compared to the durability found in competitor's solid fronts

I’ll be honest, GM has never had great interiors but no one ever cared. Fords always had a nice interior and much better in their top end trucks but Dodge needed something to separate themselves and chose interiors, and it’s worked like a charm for them. Tie rod problems also come in with mileage and lack of maintenance.

As for the frame bending, if it wasn't such a stiff frame it could have absorbed much more energy in its flex before bending, but people love to have those smooth rides so you make a stiff frame so you can control all suspension movement in controlled and repeated results only in the suspension and not relying on the frame to help out at to be more predictable and complaint

Regarding the IFS, that's one of the major reason my mini fleet of trucks are F250's. I keep them 5 years, and they are gas (6.2). Was due to be replace in Autumn , but, at this point, the business in shut down due of the bug, depending of when we will be able to restart the business , I may stretch the 2015's trucks until next Spring. I have to assess the new F250's regarding the aluminum and if I still get the 6.2's or the 7.3's engine. Diesel are not require because we rarely tow, and when I do, the trailer is under 10K. I will dona business case, and depending of the cost of the insurance, I will choose from the 2500 Chev or the F250. I think the aluminum may affect the cost of the overall insurance cost?

The 27,000 views of this video proves that there is still a demand for regular cab short bed trucks assuming people are viewing it because of the cover image. CAFE didn't kill the smaller wheelbase pickup. CAFE's implementation gave the big three an advantage over manufacturer's that build smaller vehicles with better fuel economy. The most profitable platform for the big three has historically been the half ton pickup market and if fuel economy standards would have been the same for light trucks as it was (is) for passenger vehicles the big three may not have continued to exist. So, what we are seeing now is the morphing of light trucks into passenger vehicles replacing the family sedan. None of this has anything to do with what the consumer wants. It has more to do with the self preservation of the big three auto manufacturers. When fuel prices rocket back up to above $4/gallon, sales for the so called "in demand" crew cab tiny bed light truck models will shrink dramatically as companies that still offer fuel (liquid or solid) efficient small and mid-sized vehicles will prosper. The big three will need yet another bail out by the American taxpayers.

So just to correct you about the IFS, GM has been making IFS in 2wd trucks since the 60’s but what this question was addressing was 4wd, GM started making 4wd trucks with IFS in the late 80’s. the reason tie rods fail on the 4wd is due to the fact that they are trying to hold back the torque when you are in 4wd the tires want to drive themselves forward/inward.
