To be fair to the Midwest, I was always told "don't buy seafood if you can't see the sea." And I think that the people who said that are right, because the difference in the quality of seafood between a landlocked state and a state with a coastline is HUGE.

I love seeing folks enjoy a variety of foods that I personally wouldn't try (some sort of vicarious living, I suppose), but as a fellow picky eater who has had a rocky past with seafood, I love episodes like this where I can see other people going out of their comfort zones, and I'm inspired by their courage. It's also just nice to feel seen, especially with things like textures bogging down certain dining experiences and food styles.
@Lili-ib2rh6 ай бұрын
I'm proud of her and sympathise with her, as I myself have eating difficulties (for reasons of texture and health problems) but I'm also a bit jealous because I love seafood and fish. It's probably the only thing I can always eat without difficulty (unless it's not fresh or the person is a terrible cook).

I am fascinated with this topic honestly 😂 As someone that didn't like certain Korean foods at first but now loves some of those very same foods, I'm a big believer that some folks can adapt and enjoy new flavors/textures. But there are all kinds of eaters out there 🙂
@drdanyu6 ай бұрын
@@FlavorofMind I believe that biology plays a greater role than psychology. During my early developmental years I was exposed to fermented foods (kimchi, Korean miso), seafood with different textures (sashimi, dried squid) and spicy food. So as an adult my body does not perceive, for instance, stinky cheese, durian, fermented skate or Buldak ramen to be a physical threat. Of course psychology/cultural conditioning over time has also made me appreciate these foods/delicacies.
@FlavorofMind6 ай бұрын
@drdanyu I definitely agree that biology is a big part of it, no doubt. But I also know people that have made some big changes in what they will or won't eat, and I have to believe some of that is a mix of sensory and psychological. I used to detest cilantro, for example, and now I enjoy eating it by the handful. I can't explain why exactly 🙂 but I believe there are plenty of others out there who are capable of such a shift.
