I bought one of these and a PicoGrill 85 based on your recommendations. They are terrific, packable, stoves. The 85 is perfect for backpacking at 90-ish grams. I keep the 398 in the trunk of my car. It is compact and ready to grill a steak at any time. Thanks for telling us about them.

I shared this video with my sister who works for a fulfillment company in Salt Lake City, Utah. She then passed it on to her boss for review. He's been in contact with Bruno and hopefully can work out a deal for manufacturing and distribution. Having locations both east and west of the Mississippi River shipping in the US and Canada would take 2 to 3 days. I sure hope this becomes beneficial for Bruno and the consumer.

398 model is the one made Picogrill "Picogrill" worldwide, with its simple form factor and function. Double decker 498 is certainly a "398-enhanced" model, so there are market for both. To differentiate these two models, perhaps turn 498 to bigger 598, positioning between 398 and 760.

Yes, I agree. Bruno, the company owner advises he will continue to make and sell the 398 as long as there is interest. Thanks for commenting

This is a good suggestion. There is definitely market for the 398, specially if the price can be lower to make it more attractive.

Very cool, I ordered one (arriving tomorrow via Amazon). I recently switched to a much smaller camper so this fire pit/grill will work well with my limited cargo space. I really enjoy seeing these products made by small companies.

I purchased and prefer the 498. I think its more most versatile out of the 3 stoves, with having 2 different heights, slightly bigger than the 398 and not much heavier. Its an amazing grill and firepit. The very first time I used it I put an absurd amount (fairly huge logs) of wood on there and it handled it like a champ. I'm considering getting the largest as well.

Right on. I can see the advantages the 498 has over the 398. I will be making a side by side to show people the differences. Thanks for commenting

great review Mark, i'm thinking one of those might be VERY nice to have. i already own the Picogrill 239 and just love it. i have close to a dozen other twig stoves and it is far and away my favourite. that said, the pit style of the 398 looks very appealing for those days when you just want to hang out with a nice fire going without having to saw everything up into suitable bits. 14 inches of wood is no small thing to be able to pitch onto a fire that is just fold-and-burn without any risk of damage to the ground below. big fan of picogrill! thanks for the effort to show us this one.

Seems like a great firepit, Mark. Certainly much better than the mesh jobby you reviewed before. I am almost sold. I will wait for your review of bigger ones. The huge one, especially. My philosophy is go big or go home. If I could build a long fire which could last all night in a portable firepit, I am Bruno's man. Watching your reviews is like walking through a dollar store and a good candy store at the same time. Making me wanting to buy something I do not need and not good for me but tastes good. I mean that in a nicest possible way. My complement to you, Mark. You make great videos. Thank you for sharing as always.

@@MarkYoungBushcraft I did look at the 498 but it seemed too busy for my liking. I really prefer the clean lines and simplicity of the 398 and feel like that design would better suit my tastes and needs. I guess the 498 would more easily allow use of both skewers and the grill grate at the same time if cooking for a group? But I don't envision ever needing more than one skewer and a grill grate being used at the same time. There is just something about the 398's appearance and design I prefer. ;-)

I have the large uco Aswell and find adding a coal bed grate improves efficiency for grilling . The uco is heavier and more robust than the picogrill's so I can abuse it without worry . Only thing is I'm not sure how to get those fins on the uco from always bending inwards without the grill ?

Either one (398 or 498) would slip easily into my 42 liter pack. I'd be more inclined, given a choice, to go with the smaller grill. Most of the time, I'm in the bush alone - at most, with one other person. Either way, I like that there is a lot less wood processing involved when you can use longer pieces and just shift them in as they burn.

really a nice review.. thank you, i actually use the 85. I think, my next firepit comes from Picogrill. The small and the large firepit should be enough. Brunos decision is based on this Chinese copys on the market... so he brought an upgrade.. a little larger.. but more quality an possibilities than the smaller ones... a hard business with the chinese copy industries.... sorry for my simple english. maybe in short time, we use this stoved more than we love to use.. when our Russian neighbo gets out of control.... thay healthy friends

Looks like a nice handy, and light fire pit, and this one actually has some depth to keep down the sparks a little, unlike some of the others you’ve e tested. Can’t say as I remember the other one well enough to comment on size, but I’d take your word on it.

This is very nice. I saw the other model you reviewed, what do you think about this type of design for a backyard fire pit vs the solo bonfire design? I like the fact that it looks so easy to use and take down. Living in Brooklyn NY, it might be a good model to put in the center of my back porch, run a few 12 or 14 inch logs before bed and then clean up quickly in the morning. That’s verses having a bonfire set up in the back 24/7/365 which doesn’t make as much sense in the city. Although I am thinking about that too. Thanks for the ideas and review!
@MarkYoungBushcraft2 жыл бұрын
It is very different from the Solo stoves. The Picogrills are much less expensive, lighter, and give a better open fire experience. They would make great occasional backyard or campground firepits. Not super heavy duty but plenty strong for the type of use you are describing. If you are not transporting them often you may want to look at the larger 760 model which I hope to review soon. So far, my experience is that the steel does very well with heat over time. It does warp some but it does not affect usability. I do clean them and wipe them down with WD40 before storing. Thanks for commenting

Seems like they will hold up well over time if you don't overload and abuse them given the thin metal form factor. I have the heavier duty 5" Fireboxstove, Large UCO & Snowpeak Takibi firepits I can abuse. Thanks again for all your gear reviews 🔥🍁

I admire it, and its design. I just cannot justify spending nearly $130.00 USD for what it is. Unfortunately for the original manufacturer, I can see why there is a ripoff version out of china for less than half of what the original is asking. If we can all be honest here, a more realistic price for this is somewhere in the $50.00 - $60.00 USD range. That is just my opinion though, and I thoroughly appreciate the video.
