I was one of the guilty ones, suggesting this. Great comparison. The coil of wire is purely inductive, hence you see the current on the left side diminishing. The others might be more capacitive I guess. Thanks a lot for taking the time showing it this way.

🤣🤣🤣 Thanks!! It was worth doing. Yeah I think you’re right. Someone mentioned instructions online to make your own which involved capacitors. Maybe I’ll have to see if I can get the wire to match (although for $10, just get the Hantek or Rotkee 😅). Interesting though!

Modify the probe by reversing the wires , so now the pic is right side up . Dont know why it is not done at the manufacturing level .

ya nice! coil of wire is pretty good to. i have been moving clamp as close to plug as possible. it seems to work good but, the difference is not all that noticeable. i am going to try the coil trick next time i mess around with plugs

In the two HV probe-related videos, the Pico or Hantek probe ground clips are attached to the engine or battery negative (correct me if wrong) and therefore are providing a common ground reference between the car and the scope for all four. But what about when using just the Rotkee or just the wire coil? Does a separate ground have to be set up between the scope and the car?

I’d have to check again but I’m not sure there is much difference between have the ground connected and not. The clamp isn’t in the potential difference of the car as we are just clamping on the insulation. It may be related to the capacitive features of the clamp. The Rotkee doesn’t have a ground connector. I don’t usually use one for the coin trick either

The apparent absence of the ground with the wire and cop coin reminded me of the digital tachometer I have for my single cylinder gas lawn mower and snowblower engines -- it too is connected to a wire wrapped around the plug wire, same as your coil. There's no physical ground connection or return path between the unit and the engine, but it works. I have a wire coil made up and will give it a try on the car.

On 5:38 i think they're little bit behind one another because the probs are in a different place on the spark plug extension and the scope is catching that difference 🤔

Since electricity travels at 186000 miles per second, i doubt that’s the reason.

Propagation delay in wire is roughly 60 *picoseconds* per cm. That's 60 x 10 power -12!

I have difficulties setting up the time base and trigger using the HT-25 on a hantek 1008c I cant get a steady waveform to analyse

The trigger is a bit difficult to master on the Hantek. I’ll try and have a look and do a video. It might be that the actual trigger point is off the page. Can you see position reference for ‘t’ at the top? You want the trigger in the centre of the screen

Thanks for the great video, I was wondering what the rotkee wave form would look like if you used the preset probe like you did with the hantek, would it show an accurate kv reading?

The probe isn’t the same as the 10k secondary clamp probe. In the video before this I show it; not quite the same. Not sure what the Rotkee probe is but I’m sure they have a number to use. I’ll find out! 👍

Hi quick question does the pico 2204a work on pico7 automotive or is it just for the normal scope could not really understand cheers for the help

2204A you have to use normal version of PicoScope 7. The oscilloscope features are the same as automotive

I had a question I wondered if you could help me with- I’m trying to understand math channels on the oscilloscope/ their purpose and how to use them. I bought a vdd from jarhead diag. And can’t figure out how to set up for draw test even after watching their video. Thanks for all you do!

Hey Michael, glad you are enjoying the learning! I have a small course on battery drain diagnostics where we look at this. You basically need to know the exact ohm value of the resistor. You then use that figure to make the math channel using ohms law. In this case it would be Channel A ‘divided by’ Resistor value. You them state you want the units to read amps and it should automatically convert to mA where appropriate. Hope that helps 😬

That’s how I set it up but it was still reading a lot higher than it should’ve been/ meter would read 20mA and scope would be showing 180mA but wasn’t sure if I was supposed to be looking at the math Channel or my channel A bc it showed 2 different lines. I had A/0.30 set to measure amps and setup to sync with my channel A.
