I still have yet to find a better version of Pictures at an Exhibition. It's a triumph, a masterpiece, and the quality of Salonen's work shows. Well done!

Absolutely magnificent ending. Salonen is nothing less than brilliant in his conducting. I used to go to concerts and listen to music but now when Salonen is conducting I watch him. The emotion he puts into his conducting - indescribable!

Grainy audio and video and all, this still stands up as one of the best Pictures I've ever heard.

Stunning performance of Salonen and the superb Philharmonia of London, great Pictures.

Watching it again -- the last 50 seconds, you can't help but FEEL the intensity of the music, gloriously conducted by the BEST. He is so connected with the music, that they are ONE.

Merci pour ces 6 vidéos ... Esa Pekka Salonen, est un "transformateur" de la musique !!! Il faut écouter de lui "une nuit sur le mont chauve" , M. Moussorgsky ... Amitiés à tous !!!

Outstanding........ I saw him conducting at Avery Fisher, conducting the NY Phil. A program of Ravel and Mussorgsky's "Pictures". It was absolutely breathtaking. Pictures was written for piano originally and it wasn't performed much after it's debut. Mussorgsky's alcoholism led to his demise and Ravel recomposed "Pictures" as an orchestral piece in honor of his friend and fellow Russian. I must say that that was an evening that will be hard to top.

I love Salonen, the man is a genius. My only criticism of Salonen is it's sometimes hard to read his cut offs. You've got some staggered cut offs in the brass phrasing (e.g. at 7:29)...takes just a little bit away from the majesty of the brass toward the end. I've performed this piece on a couple of occasions, tenor trombone.

On the other hand, it may have simply been botched by one of the players. I've performed this piece on a couple of occasions, tenor trombone.

I don't know whether this is a good thing or not, but I just want say this is the fastest version of Pictures at an Exhibition I've heard. Celibidache's is the slowest version I've heard. If you are interested in this, you can see them both on youtube and compare them :-)

this is BY FAR the VERY VERY VERY BEST performance of this piece- but unfortunately I can't find it on CD or in a good HQ version. I am epicly desperate. Was this recorded for publishing? who has informations?
@Lawdrich Жыл бұрын
I'm pretty sure that it was filmed for the BBC Proms 2006. This was a recording from the broadcast on TV. There used to be a slightly better quality copy on YT, but it got nuked long ago.

@CAK11891 In addition, this final is something slow when it could be something more quick, no fast but not so languid like this version of Mr. Salonen. The version of Zubin Mehta is the best for me, but it is incredible that nobody uploaded that version on KZbin. Regards.-

@AKAtheProwler Lo sé, pero de todos modos lo que escuchamos en este video es a ravel: si fuese Mussorgsky, sería la pieza de piano y no algo orquestado. Ergo, es un hermoso Ravel.

@puckrock I guess when fjs12754 said 'his fellow Russian' he means Mussorgsky, who is Russian, is Ravel's fellow?

@CAK11891, yes you are maybe right, but for me, there is nobody like Mr. Zubin Mehta conducting this with his particular arrangements (see the Zubin Mehta Portrait video from 1968 produced by the American Film Foundation). Regards from Argentina. OLIVERIO.-

I'm sorry. A lot of it is simply not together. Lots of energy though, sure.

I've heard this conductor perform it on other occasions in more appropriate concert halls. The Royal Albert Hall is just too large and spacious for this particular piece. It's a common problem many conductors have with that hall.
