I'm a geologist. We learn about David Johnston in school. That man has so much of my respect and the respect of every other geologist I've ever met. I've seen that last picture of him so many times but I've never seen the footage of him. I went and looked up footage of him. Hearing him talk you can tell that he really knew what he was talking about, he was a fabulous volcanologist, and he understood the dangers presented by Mt. Saint Helens. He saved so many people's lives. He was a real hero and his legacy lives on to this day

The plane crash one too was tragic. The picture you see (of them all happy) has the spine of one of their colleagues next to them. Apparently, they would only start eating flesh but then resorted to more internal organs. When they were rescued, being catholic, they were worried more that they may be excommuned. Fortunately, a priest reassured them they would be excused due to it being literal life and death. Sad story but a real inspiring one to show the determination of humans.

When I was a teenager, my family was parked waiting for a tunnel to allow us through. I got out and ran into the underbrush, and emerged to see a stream, and not 20 feet away, a black bear. Ooh! I got that black bear story beat! Last summer I was out in the woods by my moms taking pictures. I was crouched down trying to get a good shot of this cool mushroom and I heard a crashing noise coming up from behind me. I didn't think anything of it and just thought it was my moms dog. I turned just in time to have a big ass mama bear burst out of the bushes not even 10 feet from me. I don't know who was more surprised, me or her. I literally fell back on my ass as she skidded to a halt and her 3 babies came tumbling out of the trees behind her. I just put my hands out to my sides, slowly got up and just kept repeating "I don't want to touch your babies please don't maul me" nice and soft. She kept an eye on me, I kept my eye on her and just backed away trying to me as non threatening as possible. She decided that all was well and sat down. The babies continued to be cute as all hell and do baby bear things. I got around 20 feet away before I even remembered that I had a camera in my hand. Snapped a blurry as hell photo (didn't aim or anything, just kept hitting the shutter button and hoped I got a picture) as I kept backing away. I stopped moving when I got to about 40 feet back. The babies decided they were done wrasslin and bounded off into the woods. Mama gave me one more look before following. I seriously thought for about 10 seconds that I was going to die. Once mama decided that I wasn't a threat I stopped being scared and was just in awe of the whole situation. It was one of the most amazing yet terrifying moments of my life.

There was a movie made about the Uruguayan rugby team called Alive and it's very haunting. I saw it as a kid (about 11/12) and it's always stuck with me, I've read about the actual events as an adult and I can't begin to imagine how desperate their situation was and how it must felt doing what they did to survive. Hiiii! So regarding the bear thing- I grew up in an area where black bears are very common and had a lot of personal encounters with them. A black bear hunting humans is EXTREMELY uncommon. They’re usually terrified of people and are big babies. However, if you get between a bear and it’s kids, it will get very aggressive. These poor people really did everything they could. An aggressive bear is basically nature’s tank. But for future reference, if you come across a bear by itself just be big and make noise. If it’s with it’s babies, climb up the nearest tree. Bear spray is also a great investment. Don’t have food or very smelly stuff out when you’re camping and try to cook food away from your campsite.

Another thing to add to the List case, which is even more ironic is that in the house was an original Tiffany skylight that was worth $100,000 dollars, which could have solved the family's money problems, but it went undiscovered, and so, the List family's saving grace was hanging in their ceiling the entire time.

Also, I hate to be that guy, but one of the articles you showed during the Niagara Falls segment wasn't about a guy falling to his death at the Falls. How they found John List was the use of psychology and forensics. Frank Bender, an amazing forensic sculptor, created a bust of John List on how he would look like 18 years later. With the help of a psychologist, he pictured himself as List and made the bust from what he picture John. It led to John List’s capture and a conviction and the most disturbing part: John List after 18 years, looks exactly like Bender’s bust. Right down to the type of glasses List used.

That photo of Richy Edwards is just so haunting, I have been to that moment of making plans to end it all several times in my life and can recognise that just pure emptiness in his eyes. I’m personally a believer that he ended his own life due to mental health issues, many people don’t believe this because he never left a note saying anything. But that is actually very common with creatives who take their own lives, partially because they’ve already said so much and they can’t bring themselves to say anything more. (Also if you want to learn more about his disappearance I highly suggest Of Herbs and Altar’s video on the subject, they also talk a lot about Edwards’ mental health struggles from the point of view or someone who struggled with many of the same things)

Johnston was not the only man who died in the irruption involved with the USGS. Photojournalist Reid Blackburn was assigned to photograph the volcano's progression as part of a joint project between The Columbian (Vancouver newspaper), National Geographic and the USGS. He was trapped in his car by a pyroclastic flow. Sadly his film wasn't able to be salvaged. Photographer Robert Landsburg who also died in the eruption was with in a few miles of the summit when it erupted. He photographed as long as he could, rewound the film and put the camera in his backpack before laying on top of it to protect it. He was found 17 days later with the film still intact, providing invaluable documentation to scientists after.

Great band, definitely not known enough here in the states. I think I've listened to La Tristessa Durera and Motorcycle Emptiness just about every day for the past 10+ years. I became super fascinated with Richey and his disappearance for a while when I was a teenager in the early 2000s. I think the sad reality is he most likely ended his life but the theories and information around it are certainly interesting. I remember when people used to report "Richey sightings", and there's still a subset of the fanbase that believes he's alive somewhere. Would definitely be an interesting video topic, one that I don't think I've seen covered by the KZbin crime/spooky weird stuff community.

The story of David Johnston was more hardcore than that. He didn't anticipate he would die. Sadly, the eruption of Mt. Saint Helens happened to it's side (not from the top) which caused a devastating amount of pyroclastic flow, lava, smoke, force which completely changed the whole shape of the volcano and the neighbouring forests around it. This pyroclastic flows travel at over 300mph, are 1,000s of degrees hot and literally turn anyone who gets engulfed in it, into literal burnt charred body statues (like in Pompeii). A real hero who did save a lot of lives for the sacrifice of his own. I'm glad he got to die in a way which many people will never get to.

So what was the issue in the proposal story? What happened for him to pass away? Did i miss something?
@tokyoyoongi5538 Жыл бұрын
I think he swam too deep so by the time he got to the surface, he lost oxygen and drowned.

If you shoot your ex in the head twice, it's no longer a "suicide-pact". It's called murder.

The Rugby team in the andies is almost inspirational in a way with how they handled the situation and how people reacted. When things got dire enough for them to need to eat their dead, they were convinced by likening it to holy communion and how they would eat the metaphorical body of christ. Additionally, they mutually agreed that, if they were to die, they'd want their friends to eat THEM if it meant their survival. Once they realized rescue was unlikely due to the white plane blending with the snow, a group of the survivors braved the mountains on a brutal treck where they found help THEMSELVES and were able to rescue those left at the plane. When what they had to do was revealed, no one condemned them. They saw what they had done as a necessity and were glad to know that the dead had allowed more of them to return to their families.
