My psychology professor said if we end up having an intersex child, we should give them a unisex name and raise them without any specific gender roles. He said to do this because although we see two sexes, the body and mind know what it is from the beginning. So if you wait to make the decision, you won't really have to make one, because the kid will ultimately do it themselves naturally.

+winsletification I understand what you mean, I took French throughout all four years of high school and it's the same way. But usually kids would be able to figure out what they like and don't like by 3 or 4. And I don't know about Brazil, but I know that in French there is a way to refer to someone if you don't know the gender. Just like in English, there is a a passive "they". Like if someone is wearing a Jacket and they have a good up, and you can't tell if they are male or female, you'd refer to them as "they". I guess it'd be weird to always refer to them as "they" or just using their name every time, but it's just as weird in English. I guess it's just something people need to get used to, if they're willing to.
@YeetusTheFetus7 жыл бұрын
makaila mcdaniel unfortunately, in romantic (as in Latin-based) languages, “they” is also gendered, and if you have a group of both males and females, you refer to them as the male form of “they”.

I will never begin to understand genital mutilation; if the child can function just fine without the surgery, why have the surgery? doctors are really just making everyone's lives harder by thinking these "cosmetic surgeries" are necessary. parents are pressured to go through with it since they just want what's best for their kid, and the pain these kids go through is just not okay. it would be amazing if doctors learned to give the complete and unbiased facts and allow the patient and their family to make the choices.
@pidgepagonis8 жыл бұрын
dreg omg you said it so perfectly!!

Thing is they're not really " cosmetic". For example in this case undevelopped gonades just hanging around greatly increase chances of getting cancer.

Just try to imagine you uploaded this video, with exactly what is in it and then sb comments on it like you do. How would you feel, when you read that somebody is talking abt you but not TO you on your own video? That's just ignorant & hurtful! Secondly if you read more about this, you find that often the doctors just say it to scare ppl. It's not their right to do so. Or that it in fact can only start to get cancerous/dangerous when you are older, so there's no need to torture a young baby/child! Ever thought abt the trauma? And it's ignorant to NOT listen to all those voices of intersex ppl who campaign against it (genital mutilations/operations) and say otherwise. It's just, I can't.... how can sb be so ignorant and NOT listening?
@hoppetosse87 жыл бұрын
1. You shouldn't tell anyone that they should be happy to be alive. (WTF? I wouldn't want anyone to talk to me like that!) 2. As I said it's totally unnecessary to do those things at that young age. Also NOT at all clear that sb has to die/getting cancer. It should be THEIR decision! 3. Feeling great? There are a lot who have massive psychological problems (PTSD etc.because of the way they were treated) & also body pain etc. 4. I don't see them pittying themselves (and No you shouldn't tell them to do so - what a stupid argumentation - as if there's only one of those 2 ways to react). 5. You didn't comment on my question in my last comment & just go on w/ talking abt them. You never adressed them directly. This is my last comment now, because I really feel uncomfortable to talk about them on their video and not with them. Bye.

We are all natural expressions of nature....look at plant life and ocean life for example.... Nothing is one way or the other. The beauty in life exists in the variables...the differences and strangeness in all things. ... And all of it is beautiful.
That paternalistic, professionalism in healthcare here in Canada and the US, was the norm during lots of my life. The concept that patients can be in charge of their healthcare, and have that right, and “informed consent” rather than “I’m the professional, this is for your own good...” has really only been around since the 70’s.

This blows everything I have ever been taught about gender right out of the water. Not in a bad way, my mind has always been open to different sexual orientations, but now this whole new perspective to the way I see people and their gender/sexuality/self identification. Thank you for putting these videos out there. I once had a friend, born as a male, transitioned to female, back to male, and continues to this day to sit in limbo. I realize that intersex is a different condition all in it's own, but I now have a more open understanding to my old friend... And I now owe them a HUGE apology, for the statement I made to them that ended our friendship "make up your mind." I'm not even sure that I'm communicating efficiently, and I'm sorry if anything in this comment is offensive to anyone reading this.. I'm only human, trying to understand other humans, and this series of videos has really knocked down a few more walls in my mind so that I can better grasp an understanding of a world that I can never experience first hand. It was absolutely horrific to read the stories and look through the medical journals and documentation. I think it's great that you're posting your experience online so that more people have access to this information. The more people know about it, the more likely it is that large, overarching change in the medicalization of intersex bodies can occur.

Pidgeon I really resonated with your videos on doctors thinking that the patient is too ignorant or stupid to know what’s best for themselves, so the doctors think any advice they give the patient or patient’s parents will be perfect. While I’m not intersex, I just had awful experiences with older white, male doctors who were complete assholes and their white male privilege back then allowed them to be douchebags to me, and my dad. Your videos helped me realize that it is always a good idea to be as educated as you can on anything so that you can spot when a doctor or “professional” is not thinking in your best interest, and they are thinking on their own interests or acting on their biased advice that does not consider the patient’s situation. Were your parents not as educated, and is that why they unquestionably followed the “doctor’s” advice? I don’t blame your parents, just the doctors on messing with your life. It really makes me angry that they would make you go through such bullshit.

@АндрейБоскариёл6 жыл бұрын
You're absolutely right Karina! I find it so bizarre that this still happens in the USA and Canada. I think it's sorta a fluke in a way- the only reason it hasn't been vulgarized in society is because not enough people put the spotlight on it and really question the practice. It needs attention. It doesn't help that most people are uncomfortable talking about this issue publicly, or simply with other people. I am certain that given enough time, most people will think "what the hell were they doing back then- with all of that technology and medicine at that time and they were still acting like savages?". Sweden has already banned routine mutilation of children.

That is so sick. I can't believe they did this to you and your parents. What the hell? And us parents are not supposed to question doctor's judgements? I am so sorry this happened to you.

Ugh, I hate that you had to go through all this. Thank you for speaking out and raising awareness. Also, you are the cutest and it makes me really happy to see fellow non-binary folks starting channels and normalizing (or--some other word, who wants to be normal?) a range of gender identities.

Hey Pidgeon, I know you're gender non conforming, so do you use "they" pronouns?
@pidgepagonis8 жыл бұрын
Yes, but I don't mind when people use other pronouns...
@KoopaBOOEY6 жыл бұрын
Pidgeon I was wondering that myself. Would it be okay to always use “they” or “them” when referring or addressing an intersex person, or would it be better to ask first on how they would like to be addressed?
@autisticzuko27506 жыл бұрын
Yo giraffe, just like with everyone, ask which pronouns they use. Not all intersex people go with they/them, some go with he/him or she/her or even both.

Hi Pidgeon. What are your preferred pronouns?
@taylorclay21228 жыл бұрын
the things the doctors did to you should not be happening, I have no words
@sissyrayself75086 жыл бұрын
I think Pigeon' s preference for a pronoun is 'it" and "it's".

Your story is so much like the story of Calliope in the book Middlesex. I am sorry that you have suffered. I am sorry that doctors were not entirely truthful with your parents. I hope you have a happy and good life and that you always accept yourself just as you are. You are a good person. Thank you for sharing so honestly. You are helping many people. Have happiness.

thank you so much for this series, i'm learning so much from your talk :) Of course, it's one thing to read and research about the different types of intersex but that will never be able to replace actual human beings lived experiences. You're kick ass Pidgeon !

Hi Pidgeon! I just came across your vlog last night and despite how tough and personal this topic is for you, I must commend your eloquence so far! I have a question for you: if you were to see a fantasy film or comic which stared intersex characters (as elves, gnomes, trolls and other mythological races), would you want it set in a utopian or dystopian world? For the utopian society of course, the babies born and their parents would be given adequate information about the condition to make an informed decision as to whether surgery is medically necessary, and in the dystopian society it is not but reflects on our real world rather than imagined scenarios. Which would you rather see first represented in mainstream media if given a choice?
@pidgepagonis8 жыл бұрын
I think utopian because imagination is always required before revolution. :D But I would probably enjoy watching a dystopian film more lol.

Most doctors suck at dealing with rare syndromes. I'm sorry you were lied to, it's hard to kno what's really going on with ur body when it comes to rare syndromes. Is that illegal for them to remove that? Originally they were just going to make it smaller… I recently learned about the eugenics program in California was at one time sterilizing people without their consent !

it saddens me hearing these stories, and how the medical field is so prescriptive (no pun intended) and how society so easily goes along with this normalisation, creating a dichotomy between "normal vs abnormal" means they immediately create a "good vs bad" that justifies genital mutilation :( And how this is done down to the centimetre! :( it mirrors the frustrations i have with my autoimmune disease, an invisible illness, hundreds of doctors will say "you're not sick if your hormones are between a certain level" when in reality my immune system is attacking itself. Heaven forbid you question these doctors or search for one that thinks outside of the box. hell, the only reason women lay down to give birth is because its easier for doctors. faaah. rant over, keep the videos up :) definitely just subbed x

I understand completely how outrageous it is the doctors lied to your parents, but undescended testes do have a high risk of becoming cancerous so it probably is good they removed them, just very very wrong for them to lie to your parents about wh at they were
@frogmouth Жыл бұрын
It's not as high as the risk of getting cancer from the sun in my country . The advantage of keeping gonads in is that they might eventually do the owner some good in producing hormones that protect against osteoporosis. The sensible course of action is wait and watch

You are a beautiful young girly boy, you choose to be who you want to be. And I agree that no doctor should make a decision on doing a clitoridectomy. But is definitely a good thing that you coming out and talk about it so a lot of people can understand intersex people like you. You and other intersex people should do something so that everybody needs to learn about this, and to be taught in every school so you all are received the understanding you all deserve. I am proud of you to come out and explain something that can be difficult for many other like you. Keep your positive attitude and I’ll pray for your happy human being that you are. God bless you.
