SponneBob’s Big Birthday Blowout is my favorite episode of SpongeBob SquarePants. It’s not even a fair question which is worse. Here’s why Blowout is better than Square 1. The plot. The plot in Bday Blowout uses the runtime well and it is actually meaningful 2. The plot in Square isn’t even suitable for an 11 min ep 3. Bday Blowout was funny with every joke hitting it’s mark 4. There weren’t any jokes in Truth or Square 5. Bday Blowout actually had a lot of meaning and it really felt like celebrating 20 years. It even made a ton of old references and it even brought back Mindy from the SB movie 6. Truth or Square has 4 main characters total.

I gotta say after watching SpongeBobs Big Birthday Blowout, I really enjoyed it and it completely blows Truth Or Square out of the water in every category. This is one of the most creative episode's I've ever seen on the show and everyone who worked on it really tried their hardest to not only give us the SpongeBob we all know and love, but went out of their way to really make something different. Besides the two SpongeBob movies, and maybe a few small cameos in other episode's like Pressure and Rodeo Daze, this is the first "real" time IN THE SHOW where they've dedicate an entire episode towards being above water. Patchy here is also surprisingly likeable as while the episode is ( Thankfully ) not dedicated much at all around him, this is one of his best appearances I've seen in a VERY long time, since actually probably Friend Or Foe, and it's nice to see that he finally gets to meet SpongeBob. The only parts I didn't like was some of the grossout humor, but the special feels like an enjoyable ride all the way through, and the whole parody of the cast at the restaurant was pretty cool. I haven't seen much of any Season 10-12 episode's, but I have to say, this is one of my favorite episode's of the show. It's not just amazing, but it's one that can actually rival many of the best episode's of SpongeBob, and definetly better than the first two TV movies and a majority of this shows specials. While the vibe may not feel like the first original seasons, I think it definetly feels like something that could at least fit right in alongside Season 5 and would've been right up there with Friend Or Foe. I'm not sure where I would rank with the best specials, but it's up there along with Christmas Who and Dunces and Dragons.

As far as my thoughts on SpongeBob's Big Birthday Blowout, I would say that I liked it overall. I wasn't a fan of the gross-out bits, which are unfortunately more prevalent this season, and I wasn't that big into the bits with the party preparations, especially since it didn't get a proper payoff, but I definitely enjoyed the live-action material and was glad it took the bulk of the episode. Pairing animation in a live-action setting is certainly a gimic, but it's one that I really enjoy. The bean stuff was so stupid that I enjoyed it. And of course, the Trusty Slab bit was the best part. It was also good to see Patchy finally interact with SpongeBob. I honestly thought it would never happen in the show, so I ended up writing a fanfiction where Patchy finally meets SpongeBob and most of the main characters. Thankfully, this episode mostly fits in with it. Also, I wonder if kids will finally connect the dots and realize that Patchy is played by SpongeBob's voice actor, Tom Kenny. Despite its flaws, I consider SpongeBob's Big Birthday Blowout a good episode and the best of season 12 so far. Unfortunately, the season has been a letdown so far. The only other episodes I call good are The Krusty Slammer, King Plankton, and The Krusty Bucket. I don't know what happened, because season 11 wasn't just good, but really good. Hopefully, the new season will get consistently better as it continues. And while I think Truth Or Square is alright while not good overall, it's certainly not as memorable as SpongeBob's Big Birthday Blowout.

on the dumbo thing: a movie actually needs to make 2-3 times its production budget to break even, since you also need to factor in the advertising budget, differing exchange rates in international markets, and the cut theaters take away from ticket sales. so dumbo (at most) just barely broke even.

Nice job on the podcast guys. I watched this after hearing about the Kyoto Animation fire, so this was sorely needed. I’m excited that Static Cling and infinity train are finally on their way, though I’ll admit I’m not as hype for Infinity Train as I used to, mostly from having not seen or heard much about it for a long while, but I hope the first season turns out great. Time Warner is really pulling out the big cards for it’s streaming plan to go toe to toe with Disney Plus, hopefully this will get Netflix to step up their a-game. So yeah, here we are, the big 20. I still can’t believe this show made it this far. If I went back in time to tell my younger self about all this, I’d probably think I was making it up. I’m on the same boat with PieGuy on Birthday Blow-out, I’m mostly mixed on the whole thing. I only saw it once, so that may play a factor into that. But all the rare cameos like Mindy and David Hasselhoff were highlights for me, and I’m glad they paid tribute to Steven Hillenburg at the end by giving him thanks. Definitely a better anniversary special then Truth or Square by far.

Big birthday blowout is a far more better episode, special, and love letter to spongebob. Hands down. I haven’t seen truth or square in full since I was in my late teens, But the more I watched, it the more boring it got for me. Pieguy is right when he said it would’ve been better if these celebrity cameos were actually characters instead of random phone calls by patchy. And you waste a cameo appearance by the Robin Williams for an awkward 3 minutes of screen time? That’s something I think everyone wished they had the opportunity to rewrite better. Plus it barely has any spongebob in it compared to patchy’s segments. For BBB we have an interesting concept in both sides of the story that’s kinda hasn’t been explored in full before. -there was never a full episode about spongebob celebrating his birthday just gags. -patchy finally accomplished his goal of meeting spongebob (even though in context it’s kinda dark) -continuity knods galore. Everything TOS should have been.
