i live in South Africa, and if you ask any American what we are most known for it's probably our high-crime rates. we do have a serious issue regarding the crime rates in the country, but almost none of them have to do with school-shootings or mass shootings of any kind. the last mass shooting we had was at Marikana in 2012, but that was a police-engaged incident that had nothing to do with the gun laws of the country. Our firearms laws have a 3 step-process; the written forms (competency tests, psychiatric/medical evaluation, and criminal record evaluation); the practical exam (competency test; includes disassembly and re-assembly of firearm): and then finally sending the application for the license (each gun requires an individual license), you have to pass all three to complete the purchase and only then can you take delivery of the firearm (which in this case can take several weeks after initial application). it doesn't prevent people from owning them, it just makes it more cumbersome to purchase a weapon (people would feel less inclined to own a gun if they don't like going through the drama of buying one) and if you're really into that 2nd Amendment law, there is nothing saying you cannot be patient and wait for the process to be completed legally. This does not prevent people from stealing firearms and selling them on the black market, but in those cases the stolen firearms are more linked to gang violence rather than mental cases. We do still get gun-violence related incidents, but these are mostly relegated to smaller scale armed robberies and murders. The most major school incident (ie happened at the school) we've experienced was the slashing at Nic Diederichs in 2008, but this involved a samurai sword and we've had no other incident like it since, only small scale incidents like a stabbing and kidnapping. So not to downplay the seriousness of any of these crimes, but most Schools in South Africa are relatively safe from any form of violence, unlike the US that experiences a shoot shooting every 2 months (exaggerating).

I have recently moved to another state and had to surrender my NY concealed carry. I've had my license to carry for almost 30 years, now in a different state. My father in NYS has had an FFL for over 50 years. The red tape and regulations any law abiding New Yorker has to go through is insane. They made it impossible to get for reasons of self defense unless you had an unrestricted concealed carry. Which was also almost impossible to get. The state of NY asked on your application what you intended to use it for, if you wrote that it was for self defense you were automatically denied, it was against "their" unconstitutional laws. The only acceptable reasons were for target practice, hunting, or competition shooting. Completely unconstitutional. The state of NY has an unbelievable amount of illegal firearms despite all the gun control laws. Thankfully the supreme court has recently ruled some of their laws are unconstitutional, but now they will just make it more costly or restrict more types of guns...soon they will try to outlaw triggers. But regardless of all the laws there are still an unbelievable amount of illegal firearms. The City of NY has notoriously strict rules and regulations yet a child would know that there are oodles of criminals in all 5 boroughs carrying illegal firearms. Tell me there is no gun crime in NYC! Your laws only make it more difficult for law abiding citizens to protect themselves against non law abiding citizens. The goal in a democratic run state is to make it so difficult to keep up with all the laws that you either forget to renew on time which allows them to revoke it or make it exhausting and far too expensive to accomplish.

It had direct communication with the front office. Only authorised people were allowed through & bags were checked. They had several armed guards, security cameras & you were vetted before entry. I asked the guard why there was so much security, he said because our community gets threats & our schools can be targets so we protect our schools. They also watch cars that pull up near the school. I saw 6 guards just at the front of the school, two at the entrance, one at the end of the front fence on the footpath, one behind the gates when you walk in & one in the main office. They had stationary guards & guards that patrolled. It was something I'd never seen before but I felt safe visiting the school. I agree School's in the US are targets by mass murderers. The murderer's select schools because they can get in & they know they're not protected. The murderer of this attack changed plans because wherever she was going to attack had too much security so she hit the school because there was no security. It's not a pleasant thought but the physical entrances & armed security need to be installed to stop entry. The schools need to be protected. It's more than just including background checks on legal gun purchasers. Audrey had nothing that would have come up on a background check. The schools need protecting.

I think outlawing guns and defunding/demilitarizing the police is better than putting children in prisons.
@sunshinefalls1086 Жыл бұрын
@@SuperStella1111 with the second amendment being part of your constitution means you won't ever get rid of guns. In Australia we have strict gun rules, background checks, doctor mental health verification of being a stable person, registering of every firearm, must attend a range of a gun club for training, only allowed hand gun ownership, gun & ammo stored in separate locked safes etc. Ours is good but it still doesn't pick up on identifying plotting murderers. I guess I'm saying tighter gun rules is only one side of solution needed. People targeting schools won't stop. Schools need to be hardened to protect children. The Jewish school I visited wasn't like a prison. They did risk analysis & worked to prevent access of those who might target school children. They have been successful. It isn't a pleasant topic but I think considering schools are targeted by mass murderers in America & will continue to be, schools need protection. Recommendations are already available & were developed in consultation with various law enforcement agencies by Parkland Taskforce after that mass school shooting. Max Schacter father of Alex Schacter has tried to get School's & State's to better protect schools. They created a website of resources for schools under a national initiative. The recommendations are multi faceted from altering physical entries to schools, increase of security personnel, training of security & staff, lockdown drills with the children, safe rooms, direct lines installed to law enforcement, video access to law enforcement etc. It could be used to make it harder near impossible for anyone to gain access to kill our children. I think you need both.

This is a cultural issue, but not an American culture issue. There were more stabbings in the UK than gun deaths in America in 2022, all with just 1/5th of the population. Guns are a more effective tool for violence and causing harm, which is why the body count is higher. The intent to harm and wound and kill is there regardless. Rather than addressing the tool and focusing solely on that, maybe we as a species should try to understand why everyone is so upset, despondent, and without remorse or hope that they go down the path of violence and killing others.

There is a price for liberty. The price is not only paid by those who fight for our freedom. Liberty can be a dangerous thing, Solving every problem by removing someone elses liberty only results in everyone being in chains...You have a naturaul GOD given right to keep and bear arms...The government shall not infringe on that liberty. The right to bear arms is not granted by the government. The government shall not infringe upon your right.. Some people just don;t get that. Cars are dangerous, Planes are dangeous. Lawn mowers are dangerous, heavy equipment is dangerous......Give me liberty or give me death....So we;ve continually added gun laws since the 20's and yet gun violence has increased. Pistols are the number one weapon used to commit murder. According to the FBI handguns are used in 59% of murders. Rifles (all rifles including assault rifles) account for THREE PERCENT of murder in America. THEE PERCENT. So if you care about saving people why are you trying to specifically target ARs? Or assault rifles in general. The second amendment does not state a well regulated militia are the only ones who can bare arms. It says a well regulated militia is necessary to keep a free state so thus has the right to bare arms. It also shows arrogance that people assume the founding fathers, who wrote the greatest document ever written, were not intelligent enough to know that times change. That’s literally why they wrote it the way they did. That’s why they didn’t say muskets or bows and arrows they said “arms”. Arms is short for armaments which comes from the Latin term armamentum which is from the term armare which means to arm meaning to give weapons. Basically it is derived from two Latin terms meaning to give weapons or weapons. So they wrote arms and not muskets for a reason. Why does free speech apply to shit we write on the inet if the founding fathers didn’t specifically mention the word “internet”. The second amendment does not specify guns it’s much broader and says arms or armament. It’s there so the government remembers they are in power cause we the people allow it and can change it with violence if needed. And it also helps defend against invasions from nations like Russia and China. Shit luckily Ukraine was the ONLY nation in Europe to not regulate rifles (they have outlawed hand guns ironically.) but man imagine how much more the world would of had to help Ukraine if their people were not already some what armed. In the words of one of the founding fathers, Benjamin Franklin, “Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety.”

Would’ve been a good topic to cover AR-15’s and what they really are. Let’s start at the basics. Do you know what AR and 15 stand for? Do you know the caliber that it shoots? Do you understand that the design is made specifically to be ergonomic and lethal in the hands of anyone who wants to use it for self defense as well as horrific offenders? By the way, you should look into what you are talking about, because the Nashville shooter was using a kel-Tec sub2000, which is a PCC (pistol caliber carbine) designed to use pistol magazines and pistol ammunition….and is not an AR-15.
@Trinster604 Жыл бұрын
Is this deflecting from the main issue? The shooter still killed 6 people didn’t they? I’m not sure their families are too concerned about what type of gun it was? More that someone who was mentally Ill and being treated for it was able to buy so many guns in the first place.
