Жыл бұрын

Piers Morgan Uncensored is joined by Fox News contributor Tomi Lahren and mass shooting survivor Ashbey Beasley to discuss the recent school shooting in Nashville and what can be done to stop the amount of gun attacks in America.
Ashbey tells Piers how "only in America" could she end up down the road from the Nashville shooting, having lunch with other past shooting survivors after attending an anti-guns rally. Tomi however believes that masses of law-abiding Americans shouldn't be punished with gun-seizing or laws because of mentally unwell people who decide to commit the atrocities. Ashbey counters this point, suggesting that 77% of mass shooters get their guns legally and that people who are vulnerable shouldn't be able to get guns as easily as they do.

In my country you couldn't even get your hands on any firearm with a mental illness period, even for law abiding citizens with no mental health issues you have to go through so much red tape to acquire firearms it's almost not even worth it, in fact it's definitely not. The US at least needs universal background checks, it won't stop all the mass shootings and other gun violence obviously but it will prevent some.

The thing is, I am Londoner/British and so is Piers, for us British people the answer is really simple, in fact, ask any British person and they will tell you the solution and I guarantee you one hundred per cent of Brits will agree. Piers knows the solution but he won't direct tell them because of the fact he is British, and the last time he tried to tell Americans what to do with their guns he was hung out to dry. While the solution is simply for us Brits it is not for Americans and having a British person tell Americans what to do with their guns won't go over well.

i live in South Africa, and if you ask any American what we are most known for it's probably our high-crime rates. we do have a serious issue regarding the crime rates in the country, but almost none of them have to do with school-shootings or mass shootings of any kind. the last mass shooting we had was at Marikana in 2012, but that was a police-engaged incident that had nothing to do with the gun laws of the country. Our firearms laws have a 3 step-process; the written forms (competency tests, psychiatric/medical evaluation, and criminal record evaluation); the practical exam (competency test; includes disassembly and re-assembly of firearm): and then finally sending the application for the license (each gun requires an individual license), you have to pass all three to complete the purchase and only then can you take delivery of the firearm (which in this case can take several weeks after initial application). it doesn't prevent people from owning them, it just makes it more cumbersome to purchase a weapon (people would feel less inclined to own a gun if they don't like going through the drama of buying one) and if you're really into that 2nd Amendment law, there is nothing saying you cannot be patient and wait for the process to be completed legally. This does not prevent people from stealing firearms and selling them on the black market, but in those cases the stolen firearms are more linked to gang violence rather than mental cases. We do still get gun-violence related incidents, but these are mostly relegated to smaller scale armed robberies and murders. The most major school incident (ie happened at the school) we've experienced was the slashing at Nic Diederichs in 2008, but this involved a samurai sword and we've had no other incident like it since, only small scale incidents like a stabbing and kidnapping. So not to downplay the seriousness of any of these crimes, but most Schools in South Africa are relatively safe from any form of violence, unlike the US that experiences a shoot shooting every 2 months (exaggerating).

I lived in upstate NY for 40 years and was fortunate enough to be able to get a concealed carry permit when I turned 21. I have recently moved to another state and had to surrender my NY concealed carry. I've had my license to carry for almost 30 years, now in a different state. My father in NYS has had an FFL for over 50 years. The red tape and regulations any law abiding New Yorker has to go through is insane. They made it impossible to get for reasons of self defense unless you had an unrestricted concealed carry. Which was also almost impossible to get. The state of NY asked on your application what you intended to use it for, if you wrote that it was for self defense you were automatically denied, it was against "their" unconstitutional laws. The only acceptable reasons were for target practice, hunting, or competition shooting. Completely unconstitutional. The state of NY has an unbelievable amount of illegal firearms despite all the gun control laws. Thankfully the supreme court has recently ruled some of their laws are unconstitutional, but now they will just make it more costly or restrict more types of guns...soon they will try to outlaw triggers. But regardless of all the laws there are still an unbelievable amount of illegal firearms. The City of NY has notoriously strict rules and regulations yet a child would know that there are oodles of criminals in all 5 boroughs carrying illegal firearms. Tell me there is no gun crime in NYC! Your laws only make it more difficult for law abiding citizens to protect themselves against non law abiding citizens. The goal in a democratic run state is to make it so difficult to keep up with all the laws that you either forget to renew on time which allows them to revoke it or make it exhausting and far too expensive to accomplish.

It's called class. :) Look, since the inception of the Unites States we had guns all along, yet till about the 2000's there weren't many mass shootings, certainly not at the rate as nowadays. Something has gone wrong with society, very wrong. While I'm not a gun owner, I respect the Second Amendment of the Unites States, the right to bear arms. It's simply too late for the government to try to take away all guns from citizens, there are over 300 million guns out there, it's simply impossible. But what's possible, is restricting access to guns by the mentally ill.

@@yamabro4704 What you're saying is technically true, however, the comparison is spot on, simply because both are tools that if not used properly can and do, cause a lot of damage. A text on paper doesn't change that fact. Just like you have to know how to operate a vehicle and know the rules of the road to keep yourself and everyone else safe, you should know how to properly operate a firearm and know the law of when and how to use it. If you think beyond a surface level, when a situation occurs around you and someone pulls a gun, you'd want them to know what they're doing with it, not like the guy in Texas that accidentally shot a little girl trying to shoot the thief that snatched his bag.

Especially today, kids these days no nothing but Facebook, Twitter, TikTok, OnlyFans, and video games. Entitled beyond belief, no responsibilities, no integrity, no discipline... and then they can just walk in and buy semi-automatic rifles and endless ammunition on the spot with no one questioning it or raising an alarm whatsoever? I mean.. what do you expect to happen exactly? I understand that your fear and paranoia aren't unfounded, but you either have to adapt to life as it is today and implement some rules or just suffer the consequences and adopt mass shootings as just part of being an American. I live in Australia & learnt something from visiting a Jewish school that made me think. The school had 6 foot fence around it & 2 entrances of closed gates with guards at the entrance. It had direct communication with the front office. Only authorised people were allowed through & bags were checked. They had several armed guards, security cameras & you were vetted before entry. I asked the guard why there was so much security, he said because our community gets threats & our schools can be targets so we protect our schools. They also watch cars that pull up near the school. I saw 6 guards just at the front of the school, two at the entrance, one at the end of the front fence on the footpath, one behind the gates when you walk in & one in the main office. They had stationary guards & guards that patrolled. It was something I'd never seen before but I felt safe visiting the school. I agree School's in the US are targets by mass murderers. The murderer's select schools because they can get in & they know they're not protected. The murderer of this attack changed plans because wherever she was going to attack had too much security so she hit the school because there was no security. It's not a pleasant thought but the physical entrances & armed security need to be installed to stop entry. The schools need to be protected. It's more than just including background checks on legal gun purchasers. Audrey had nothing that would have come up on a background check. The schools need protecting.

@@SuperStella1111 with the second amendment being part of your constitution means you won't ever get rid of guns. In Australia we have strict gun rules, background checks, doctor mental health verification of being a stable person, registering of every firearm, must attend a range of a gun club for training, only allowed hand gun ownership, gun & ammo stored in separate locked safes etc. Ours is good but it still doesn't pick up on identifying plotting murderers. I guess I'm saying tighter gun rules is only one side of solution needed. People targeting schools won't stop. Schools need to be hardened to protect children. The Jewish school I visited wasn't like a prison. They did risk analysis & worked to prevent access of those who might target school children. They have been successful. It isn't a pleasant topic but I think considering schools are targeted by mass murderers in America & will continue to be, schools need protection. Recommendations are already available & were developed in consultation with various law enforcement agencies by Parkland Taskforce after that mass school shooting. Max Schacter father of Alex Schacter has tried to get School's & State's to better protect schools. They created a website of resources for schools under a national initiative. The recommendations are multi faceted from altering physical entries to schools, increase of security personnel, training of security & staff, lockdown drills with the children, safe rooms, direct lines installed to law enforcement, video access to law enforcement etc. It could be used to make it harder near impossible for anyone to gain access to kill our children. I think you need both.

@@davejorgenson2 true but the issue doesnt ssem to be lack of guns at shcools but guns in America. So many western and allied nations to the US dont have the gun lwas that the US has but their mass shooting incidents (school or no school) are so infrequenct and minte. If you want to look at it from the mental health angle, then for example Japan, that as a population have tonnes have mental health issues, dont have mass shootings anywhere near the US.

@London_Nomad , I'm not necessarily concerned about outlet countries. Especially countries where the government has complete control of the citizens. We're having more of these issues because there is an agenda by outside forces to brainwash and destroy America. The media pushes it, the far left pushes it... it's easy to see.
@Debthouse

One common denominator for many of the mass shootings, in recent times, seems to trace back to issues related to or in the absence of *parenting*. Of course that does not account for every single shooting, but it seems to be a common factor in the vast majority of cases. If you are not interested in an 18-year full-time commitment for each child that you create, do not have children. Having a child may render you a mother or a father immediately, but being a parent is a lifelong commitment that if you choose to neglect or fulfill poorly will lead to maladjusted, disillusioned, anti-social, enraged, frustrated, incompetent, vengeful, etc. individuals who will eventually lash out once they are pushed past their tipping point. This is not a critique or attack on parents, but it is a reminder of the importance of your role in your child's development and how they weave themselves into the fabric of society. You are called a "primary caregiver" because you are supposed to be the leader in the care of your child. Focus on this! No one takes any issue with balanced and rational individuals owning guns. This is not a gun issue.

Simon, that mass shooter (like virtually every mass shooter in the USA) had a history of sadistic, violent, reckless, dangerous, generally unbalanced behaviors going back to childhood yet he wasn't put in a psychiatric hospital until AFTER he killed 35 people in cold blood. That was a huge failure of government, and as sleight of hand to distract from that failure the Aussie government confiscated the guns of 700k Aussies who hadn't harmed anyone nor had any intentions to do so. Where is the justice in that? These warning signs were there with the Parkland, Florida shooting and also the Uvalde, Texas shooting. The histories of the two perpetrators read very similarly to each other. We need to start putting those so unbalanced as to not be trusted with a firearm in psychiatric hospitals. We used to do that, and we didn't have these mass shootings. I, for one, am thankful that our government doesn't move as fast as the Aussie government. It's a feature, not a bug, of the US government that things don't happen very quickly. Knee jerk reactions, whether in our government or our personal lives, rarely work out for the best. We have a significant number of Americans that do want to confiscate, like Australia did, semi-auto guns and those proposals were put forth after Uvalde. That rather misses the point in light of what I've said, and we, by pressuring our representatives, got some of the worst stuff removed from the post-Uvalde bill. What remained, though, was still bad enough. Currently, a federal bureaucracy is trying to turn ~40 million Americans who haven't harmed anyone into federal felons. We have pressured the House of Representatives into taking up a bill to not allow that. They were not keen on doing that themselves, but we made ourselves heard. It's unlikely that it will pass the Senate, but we are going to give it a go nonetheless. Even if we don't get it through the Senate, that we got it through the House of Reps (our proportional House of Congress) shows broad public support which will bolster our court case against the pistol brace rule the ATF (the aforementioned federal bureaucracy) is putting in place. BTW, the director of the ATF is a guy named Dettelbach. He went through his confirmation hearing, and he said under oath that the final rule about pistol braces would allow people to keep them as long as they were not attached to a firearm. Now the final rule, in direct contradiction of that sworn statement, will make felons of those if they keep those even IF they are not attached to a firearm. He lied under oath so he should be prosecuted for perjury and removed from that post since he lied to get into that job. Now, unless we get a successful injunction, all those people will be felons when they haven't harmed anyone. Totally lacking in justice. We have several court cases filed, and one of them may wind up being a nationwide injunction. So far we have some limited injunctions as these lawsuits work around the court system.
