Piers has a point. My catholic-raised mom wore headscarves and turbans back in the 1970s. It was just the fashion. A piece of clothing like any other. We can wear a scarf around our neck, but not on our head? Yet we can wear a hat on our head? How ridiculous. How about the Muslim dress? Should a woman be forced to wear a Western suit to work? Maybe let's pick on her jewelry, too? Let's scrutinize every piece of her outfit to make sure it has no religious connotations?

The solution is really simple. She can pack her bags and find an equivalent job in a Muslim country, where she does not have to fight for her right to wear a Hijab at work place. Right now, Muslims have a very bad image around the world.
@CaesarCassius

The difference is that the Islamic Iranian government is beating, jailing, poisoning and killing women for refusing to wear a hijab. ISIL (the Islamic state militia) forced their sex slaves to put on hijabs before they raped them. Those Yazidi women when they were rescued by American soldiers, the first thing they did was rip off their hijabs and trample on them. If Piers condemns Shamima Begum because of her association with ISIL and endorses her being stripped of British citizenship, he should also be consistent here. Hijab is a symbol of Islamic terror and fascism, it should be banned jsut like the swastika.

@@thokucheetah Clearly you are trying to use silly examples to confuse the truth. Wearing a head scarf is Not THE SAME as wearing a bikini or a clown mask to work. A new law could easily come out that bans women from using makeup, or how about the law that existed back then that only prostitutes should wear lipstick as it is mandatory? Hijab, makeup, hair clips, accessories, and tattoos are not things that interfere with the dress code. Just admit that you don't like this religion or its people and you want to erase them. A dress code serves for something, like not wanting people to be distracted at work, or look professional. And I really don't think covering your hair changes that.

If a company is so concerned with a hijab, or a pagri, a burqa, or so on, then that is not a company you should want to work at as they put way too much emphasis on 'the right kind of appearance'. I run a business which consists of people from many ethnic backgrounds and preferences, and we all wear whatever as long as it is 'modest' (which basically means don't come in a bikine or shorts or a tank top etc). However, when people move to Western countries, they expect these nations to respect and accept their religious practices. I’m an ex Muslim and I absolutely believe women should be able to cover themselves if they want. There’s a difference between preaching the religion and wearing a head scarf.

I could never really trust anyone, especially the more educated they are, when they have head coverings that must be worn because of religious reasons. Ok if you are out in the desert or it's cold and raining but really INSIDE, seriously!! It implies they are not able to question religious dogma, apply reason and logic .... in my view it diminishes their intelligence. It's a great ruling for companies and all that religious symbolism can be kept for the privacy of the home.

if all the people who are in favor of piers' asinine view really think it should be our choice and a company can't make it a rule then why not just abandon uniformity or the word uniform as a whole in any institution if you're an army officer and don't feel like wearing your uniform who is anyone to tell you otherwise? Why should children go to school in a uniform? why does a doctor have to wear a lab coat etc. It's really about discipline and it's time people stop putting RELIGION OVER COMMON SENSE.

People are not talking about Muslim women in army,.it is about woman in work force.if it was in army nobody would question it. And in school , I don't know what happens in your school but discipline doesn't require you to abandon your identity. In my school we pray so we are showing belief in God which breaks the thought about uniformity that everybody is same. If it is about uniformity who decides what uniformity to follow. Why not implement everybody having to wear headscarf.

A good friend of mine as well as my wife are Christian but they're also Japanese. Even though they're not Buddhist, they're uncomfortable if you leave your chopsticks sticking out of your food, especially rice. It's both religious and cultural. I think it's very similar to the headscarf deal. Also, as an American, I'm used to the reverence of freedom, which makes this a tricky issue to me. We have the freedom to practice religion (provided no one gets hurt) pretty much anywhere---it's one of our fundamental rights---but private companies should also have the right to implement a dress code to their employees. I work at a gym and we have to wear uniforms, though I don't think a headscarf would be an issue (though a full-on face covering would). That woman on the left sucks at discussion/debate, though. I totally agree with Piers on this one.
