Indeed there is a law in China to protect people's portrait rights but it must satisfy certain conditions. Using cameras or filming equipments is not prohibited in public areas in China. It is prohibited to take one's portraits/images to use for commercial purposes or make financial gains without one's approval. Hence if what happened to Brendan with these so called Chinese happens in China, the Chinese police or China's legal system will dismiss these people's claim, unless they can actually prove that Brendan has deliberately used their images for commercial purposes or financial gains. I think the shouty guy just read too many stories about celebrities suing people for their portrait rights and thinking himself is a celebrity or someone too important.

You're right about the mix up between who are the Japanese and Chinese film crews. The song was a rendition of a melody played in a Tom and Jerry animated cartoon that the CCP found offensive, similar to the way they found Winnie the Pooh offensive as they believe it mocks the likeness of Xi Jinping. The Chinese didn't make an issue about this until after the incident, which just shows they won't hesitate using anything to make themselves out as oppressed victims here. As for the policewoman, it's no surprise she sided with the Communists since her progressive woke ideology lines up with their state funded authoritarianism. It's a good thing Dr. K has the whole thing on video so everyone can see what happened without being taken out of context. Let's hope KZbin doesn't take it down, but if they do, there's always other streaming sites like Rumble, etc.

When I lived in Beijing, I was told "YOU ARE IN CHINA NOW" or "THIS IS CHINA" (这是中国!) almost weekly whenever I expressed my personal opinions about things I didn't agree with. I am Chinese and would like to provide some additional context. This type of behavior is not routine in Mainland China, and is not acceptable even by Chinese standards. So same as the English-speaking world, people in China are also wondering how come these people suddenly deviated from the initial friendly interaction to being extremely defensive and created all this drama. Here's a theory from the Chinese social media: These people are not shooting any 'TV commercial', but some kind of "Overseas Chinese making New Year wishes" video for the Chinese New Year celebration. Instead of livestreaming their wishes on New year's Day, which is what they are supposed to do, they shoot the video beforehand and play pre-recorded clips on TV pretending to be livestreaming. That's why they are dressed in the New Year's vibe waving those flags. So if they show up in Dr. K's video two weeks before New Year's Day, their fake livestream will be exposed. That's why they have an NDA in their contract with the TV station. The moment they knew Dr. K is a KZbin influencer, they knew they fucked up and went into panic mode. Of course there's no way to confirm whether this is exactly the case, but I think this theory answers why there's a clip of them playing the piano with Dr. K, and suddenly in the next clip they are arguing.

The Chinese group have mentioned in their Weibo video (that many Westerners have yet to see) that they were standing around the piano because they wanted to film a song using the piano for a video they were producing for a company. The Chinese had waited 40 minutes to use the piano but Brendan kept on playing as they did not know he is a KZbinr doing a live stream. Brendan is said to not have permit to do his live stream. The Chinese requested for anonymity because the company they are filming for had a non-disclosure clause. They were basically acting according to their contract with the company and requesting Brendan to censor their faces and voices. The company hired the group of Chinese to make a video for Chinese New Year which is to be released on a later date, hence the non-disclosure clause. Unfortunately, Brendan chose to not only not listen intently to their polite request, he chose racism toward the Chinese. 1) Brendan called them Japanese despite knowing they are Chinese, 2) Brendan also played the discriminating Ching Cheng Hanji meme tune in front of the Chinese group, 3) Brendan called the Chinese flag the "CCP/communist" flag (these two ways of calling the flag show different meaning - one shows your impartiality, another shows your racism).

Filming without consent is legal but posting others' faces/voices/identities without consent is unlawful. There is a fine difference. In this case, Brendan is doing the latter since explicit request was given by the Chinese to keep their identity (face and voice) anonymous. According to INTERNET LAW CENTRE UK: "Do you have a right to privacy on KZbin? As a general rule, you have a right to privacy on KZbin. A breach of privacy could lead to legal action and an award of damages against the publisher. This means that if someone posts a video of you on KZbin without your consent, in many cases, you will be able to have the video taken down, on the basis of a breach of your privacy. Whilst it might not be unlawful to film someone in a public place, publishing that video could breach their right to private life. There is a distinction between filming and publishing. The law in the UK was changed. I used to have to get permission from people to use their images in a UK Gov publication. It got so difficult that the publication ended up full of rear views of people and occasional fuzzy faces. The UK law was changed NOT to protect people's rights, but to allow UK government departments to be able to lawfully record images and video anyone anywhere, anytime. This created a police state system in London that even worries the Chinese, who you would think would be used to surveillance. Our blind tolerance of surveillance destroys our human right to privacy.and here we are slagging off Chinese who are saying "WTF happened to privacy here?"
