I think this shows what type of parent Diana was to her children. You don’t bring your children into your marriage problems. I am glad that William met Catherine and her family and saw what a normal happy relationship they have among themselves. William have matured into a great man.

Controversial opinion, I think Diana wanted people to believe she was the good, fun parent, but Diana put the boys into more public situations with papp shots than Charles did. Charles' holidays with the boys were on their country estates or ski slopes, with one pre-arranged photo call. Diana had more public, fun times, "look at us, we're having so much fun!". Diana would have LOVED Instagram! The Instagrammable life was more important to her. In that way, Meghan is exactly like Diana, and Harry picked up on their similarities.

@@Anna_Key The fun moments Diana had with her sons, certainly it was to compassionate that her mother wasn’t there when she grew up, she made sure to do all the things she didn’t do and had with her mother. Additionally those fun moments are the only souvenirs left for William and Harry to cherish, as a memorable remember of the precious time spent with their dear mother.

The story about Camilla is very sad -- dragging kids into the bitterness of a parent's divorce is horrible. Happens way, way too often and is always, in every case, very damaging to the children. The Camilla haters seem to act from a weird belief that if not for her coming back into Charles' life, Charles and Diana would have had a happy marriage. Not bloody likely. I think you got a Diana right. William seems to act pretty age appropriate, with a caveat. Diana was his Mother. The divorce was extremely difficult, and I’ve heard poor William was her “shoulder to cry on”. Pretty young, in other words. He probably wanted his happy Mother back, and would risk saying things to cheer her. She later admitted Mrs. Parker-Bowles was NOT the problem in the marriage with Charles. Although, she managed to refer to her for a period as “the Rottweiler”. And, Unfortunately, I Imagine she used the phrase around her young children. Too.

I was a HUGE fan of Diana, and was sad and angry when the marriage ended. However, the more I hear and read about her now, makes me think she was not this paragon of virtue that so many thought she was, and if she had lived may not have been very popular. William, a young boy just going through puberty was used by his mother to confide in, and no matter how much she loved her boys, what she did was selfish and wrong. I'm so happy for William that he found a lovely and seemingly kind woman with a strong family.

@@dianad1968 I agree.. her popularity was startign to wane just before her death, because she was reported to be partying, living a bit of a jet set life style. Perceptive and empathic sons are often very aware of their mother’s moods, likes, and dislikes, without there being a great deal of explicit conversation. I believe William’s relationship with his mother was in many ways closer and more “adult” than Harry’s, which is probably why he is able to love her memory without the Oedipal level of worship that cripples Harry.

I'll always defend my unpopular opinion that Diana was not a good mother. Nobody disputes she loved her boys but love alone doesn't make a good parent. She dragged two little children in adult problems and disputes instead of shielding them. No small child should ever feel it's his or her role to protect the parent it should be the other way round.

As you say, love alone does not make a good parent. But, she did the best she could under changing circumstances. And there is no doubt that she was very much a hands on mum when those boys were younger. Diana became increasingly paranoid and obsessed about the Royal Family, and she was awfully manipulated and lied to by Bashir to give that BBC interview. She latched onto fitness gurus and astrologers for guidance, instead of good friends and a good psychiatrist. Terribly sad really.

Diana and her siblings were very cruel to their stepmother after their father remarried. They would place tacks on her seat cushion and play pranks on her like a bunch of spoiled brats. When her father died they took all of her belongings, put them in trash bags and left them outside. I think her name was Raine and she was Barbara Courtland’s daughter. On the other hand Diana was a big fan of Barbara’s romance books about Princes and Princes and this was probably her only source of extracurricular reading. Diana went into that marriage thinking it was all going to be like some fairy tale but the gross incapability of her and the scholarly Charles was so wide what in the world did they have in common except the two boys. That marriage was doomed before it started.

After hearing this story, I though to myself, I KNEW it. I have always wanted to believe that Diana, as the daughter of divorced parents herself, and being someone who was deeply traumatised by that divorce -- that Diana would instinctively understand how extremely important it was not to badmouth her ex, or her ex's partner, to her children --- for the sake of their future mental health, future relationships and future happiness. But now......From this story, it seems all too likely that Diana openly shared her hatred of Charles and Camilla with her sons. Luckily, William appears to have been able to move beyond that dynamic, to establish a warm relationship with his father; despite being indoctrinated against him by Diana at an impressionable age. Unfortunately, Harry has not been able, it seems, to form an opinion of his father (and his father's wife) that is independent of what his embittered mother taught him to believe all those years ago. I guarantee that one of the first things Archie and Lillibet will do when they come of age, is try to contact the British branch of their family, whom they will have been cut off from all their lives. Sadly their grandparents Charles and Camilla will probably be deceased. Whether Harry and Meghan's children will ever get to hear the other side of the story - the version which is different from the one their parents will have told them about their evil, grasping, coldhearted Royal relatives -- remains to be seen.

Camilla was not the source of Dianas misery. She wasnt involved with Charles at all in the first 5 years of his marriage during which time he was desperately trying to understand his wifes Borderline Personality Disorder. He did not re- commence his affair with Camilla until he had found out about Dianas adultery with her married body guard. Diana herself admitted to being the first to cheat. She used the Camilla narrative to cover her tracks. She would have given Ms Markle a run for her money!!

I agree with your assessment that the young William was eager to please his mother. Diana adored William, the future king, and neglected little Harry, the (so I think) cuckoo child. Everybody even remotely close to the Royals knew that. Of course it never went public, firstly because the Royal Family would do everything to protect the reputation of the mother of the future king (and would have probably gone as far as to build a smokescreen around the Hewitt affair and Harry's conception), and secondly because such noises would have been drowned in the Diana hype at that time. Watch photos of him as a young child, watch their mother's body language when she was with her sons. Case in point here is the famous picture of the three of them in the water slide at a theme park. Diana laughing maniacally to show the world "how much fun" they were having, William mirroring that laughter, looking painfully forced, and little Harry obviously not knowing why he was there.
@vasundajay
@vasundajay Жыл бұрын
It does seem like Diana confided in little William, and he knew that if he were to say certain things about certain people then he could make her laugh, and perhaps keep her attention for longer? I mean, it is the childish idea that one would be liked if they agreed with the prevalent ideas and thoughts of the people one would like to befriend. I don’t know if little William felt he needed to keep that up to remain in the good standing with his mother, or if it was just regular banter between two ‘old’ chums. It does imply that Diana had clearly drawn lines that she could not keep even from her young son.

Don't know if this is true, but it was said that Diana, use to confide in William alot, with regard to her relationships, and Charles. Introducing William and Harry, to people like the England rugby player, when she was in a relationship with him, James Hewitt, and Dodi, maybe others. I think that, on her part was bad parenting, he was like piggy in the middle, dealing with things, and conversations, that he shouldn't have had to. With regard to William getting away with, drinking a bit of wine then. The difference he matured, when he turned into an adult, from his teenage ways, he probably did alot worse we don't about, it's all part of growing up. The difference is Harry is a man now, but with the mindset of a teenager. Worse thing Diana was introducing Piers Morgan to William, so he'd give him an easy ride of it. Piers Morgan is his, and the royal family's biggest supporter, and the person he needed saving from was his own brother.

One can only imagine the conversation taking place when William contributed to it. I’ve got to have a think on this😃 Now Doria!! What do you know about the…care facility? she bought for millions? The website is shady. Do you think, it’s just a way to mine data? Names, emails, phone numbers, to sell? What is up with it? That’s what I’d like to know about Doria.😃 Cheers, Patty fm Philly

Kids being kids hey, you can always rely on them to bring something up to make things a little awkward or embarrassing. I found the young William info to be very cute. I do however wonder though if it was completely innocent, and just a child that was dragged to what would have been a boring lunch for him, trying to get his Mothers' attention. I know my kids would be the first to point out and laugh about their grandmothers appearance in a portrait. At 13, any kid would find the horses' head story hilarious, but probably may not understand the insult intended by the article. How torn those two boys must have been. So glad that William seems to have found his lifetime soulmate in Catherine.

my guess is that either this was somewhat staged so Diana could get some digs into the Queen and Camilla through her son, which is pretty immature and not what I'd call good parenting, or William felt so free to slam them in front of Diana because she was somewhat of a child herself and relied on William for emotional support. Either way, while I can understand the resentment and pettiness to a degree, I can't respect bringing your child into it all.

It sounds like Diana encouraged William in making remarks about people to amuse her normally, which is inappropriate. My mum always used to say don’t make personal remarks about people and that was 50s/60s and now we have our Great grandchildren living with us if they say anything hurtful about people I always say how would you feel if someone said that about you (even though sometimes it’s funny I never laugh and didn’t with my kids either. Schools (in the UK anyway) are much better at teaching children to consider others nowadays. I definitely don’t blame William he was a child and I don’t think Diana had the benefit of a loving home like I did either. I’m surprised at Piers Morgan putting it in his book though especially as they had an agreement. I liked him when he stood up for the truth after the Oprah lie fest but there’s been a few things lately that have made me realise why he was editor of the Sun (a newspaper I despise). I would rather be me than poor Princess Diana, even though she was rich and I was born in a two up and two down house with no bathroom or inside loo. I was surrounded by love and still am. Like everyone else I was so sad when she died. I could sort of understand the Camilla /horse “joke” on have I got news for you if it had happened after Diana died because Camilla was the but of so much hate and vilification but I hadn’t recalled it before she died. It’s funny how recollections may vary (as someone once said😂) It must have been Hell for Camilla and Charles for years. I’m glad he’s on the mend and they’re much more popular than anyone ever expected for all those years. Great review (as usual) Shauna. Sorry about the long comment

Yes I totally understand what motivated William as I did the same thing at his age for the same reason. It’s so easy to criticise Diana for her behaviour but really she too was young and very hurt and humiliated. At 75 I have more understanding now. Doesn’t matter what family it occurs in the outcome of adultery and marriage breakdowns causes mayhem. The manipulation games come to the fore. Which is probably why the Queen had alone time with William to guide him in his role and to give another outlook. Sad thing is that she too seemed to condone Charles’ behaviour by condoning her husbands behaviour. No moral compass in that household. I so hope we never hear of William hurting Katherine in that way.

She was publicly humiliated and had no support from the RF who seemed to think she should just accept his affair and shut up. Disgusting really... all these women coming out and lambasting Diana for her choices. I wonder how many of them would do things differently in the same situation and circumstances? Diana was fighting against a whole powerful institution with no support of her own.

I did read you between the lines Shauna. My take is William was his mother's confidante and Diana apparently unloaded a lot of her anger and resentment of the situation on him without realizing those things remain in a child's head. Many bad marriages are like that. If you are close to one side, everything the other side does is bad and a mockery. But William was also just a young boy and had not learned to filter his comments, especially in front of those he thought his mother trusted enough to talk to. If his mom didn't die, William as an adult probably would either resent both parents' behavior or be mature enough to understand and respect both sides.

I think it's ok to say Diana spoiled her kids. I've seen snippets of old reels of both kids misbehaving and NO ONE intervening to correct them. Perhaps it was done on occasion but I have a sense Diana would not have taken kindly to it. It's important to accept William as a person with his own flaws otherwise if the public elevates him too high soon enough they'll want to tear him down. That's how it goes. Same goes for Catherine. People are not flawless or one-sided and that's ok (as long as it's not cruelty or awful behaviour being covered up).

Yes, they will place Catherine and William on a pedastal now because they're ripping into Hazbeen and MeGain (I am no fan of theirs) BUT as soon as they are able to, they will start devaluing William and Catherine too. People love to do that - as is evidenced in the recently popular past time of shredding Diana to bits, promoted by this vile grifting channel. All the while ignoring Charles and Camilla's many flaws because the Palace PR is protecting them and rewriting history for them.

Boys can be cocky little roosters at that age and blurt things out without thinking. They make you feel embarrassed and later they feel foolish and regretful for speaking out of turn. As Diana apparently treated William as her confidant, he may have felt the need to champion her if she had been showing him those news items and laughed and joked with him about it a little earlier. I can see why Diana wanted to be present at William's first formal meeting with a very influential man with a deal of power over William's future popularity and reputation. William probably learned a valuable lesson in discretion.

Great pickup.Sadly, Diana was a very disturbed and unstable person who not only suffered a serious eating disorder( and the terrible mood swings that accompanied that) but also very strong signs of Borderline Personality Disorder. She was known to involve her children in all her extremes of mood, particularly leaning on William as her emotional crutch. Harry was in the room when she told her 'speech therapist" about her sex life with Charles!!! She would have known EXACTLY what she was doing having William join the lunch, and she openly slated Camilla and their father in front of them all the time. Not a great way to raise healthy children. Yes she loved her children, but her 'mothering skills' had as much to do with using them for media manipulation and punishing Charles as anything else. Id love you to review Lady C's first book on Diana...before she died and became deified

Diana always had an agenda. So many people are still under the impression that she was a saint, or at least this good, down-to-earth, always ready to have a laugh woman when away from her role. Especially here in the US. And she could be those things sometimes. But she was a deeply disturbed woman. Deeply troubled. I truly believe she had what’s commonly referred to as borderline personality disorder. The details are out there. And those people are never fun to live with. As a mom, I’ve found so many of the things Diana did with and to her boys so awful. Especially William. Suffice it to say, Charles is not perfect, no one is. But there is a reason his marriage to Diana did not make it, and it had nothing to do with Camilla Parker-Bowles. Not a thing.

Making an effort to depict this luncheon anecdote in a sordid sort of way is surely a huge stretch! Would 13 year old William have really been told to make this anti Camilla comment? Highly doubtful! However it is totally normal for the children of divorced parents to struggle bonding with their parent’s new love interests so bearing that human truth in mind I don’t think we can say that he was cooperating with some crazy agenda of Diana’s…his jokes as described were just totally normal in my opinion, it doesn’t seem staged at all for Piers Morgan’s benefit! Just a typical 13 year old having a laugh at the expense of Granny and then at the expense of his Dads girlfriend… sounds pretty innocent 😇 given piers Morgan’s ability to sniff out a story I think this amounts to very little!
