They are just testing to see how civilians in populated areas react to drones most likely. There were plenty of tests done in the 1960s for example about how populated areas would react to sonic booms from supersonic aircraft. These are US military drones used for detecting gamma rays. These drones exist, they are large, and they have all manner of aerials to prevent jamming etc. This is likely a test to detect dirty bombs. You can understand the reason they are keeping this quiet - to prevent panic.
