The Wooded Beardsman

In day 7 of our survival challenge, we catch, clean and cook pigeon from a farm. We cook the pigeon primitively over an open fire on a spit using materials in the woods. I'll also try my luck at fishing for brook trout to see if we can survive the ultimate survival challenge. This isn't about just waiting out the clock, but rather to balance out our calories.
I will show you how to pluck the birds and clean them so they are ready for grilling over an open fire using just a stick. I'll do the same and cook the fish over fire with a very simple method. Bush cooking or bushcraft cooking should be done using very simple and easily accessible means.
Full Season 5 Playlist: • Season 5: The Wilderne...
The Wilderness Living Challenge is not a "survival challenge," but more like a test of the modern hunter gatherer to sustain himself on wild foods only. We will weight ourselves at the start of the challenge and weight out at the end. If we lose any weight at all, we lose the challenge!
Check out Zach Fowler: • Catch And Cook Alewife...
Follow along as we struggle to get wild foods!
I am joined by Zach Fowler on his home turf in Maine, USA in the spring.
Here, we plan to do Season 5 of The Wilderness Living Challenge. The goal of the challenge is to gain or maintain our body weight eating only the wild food we can collect on site using whatever means necessary.
Winning the Wilderness Living Challenge is harder than it seems.
Season 5: Maine Spring, takes place in Maine, USA with coastal food priorities including fish, clams, crab, seaweed, groundhog, pigeon, turkey, dandelion, cattail, and whatever else is edible! Nothing is off the menu, if it's edible, we'll eat it.
We make use of all the resources in this challenge to meet the demands for calories imposed by the human body!

I made too many comments but I think locally is great. Not only does Canada offer the best of everything wild (if not near urban areas), but you may not thought of this but your comfort for the challenge feels better closer to home. Bob and Fowler are your friends. You traveled for friends. Friendship requires give and take and you have definitely given your end, although if I’m keeping score I’m looking forward to Bob Hansler in Canada. 😬 next series? Bob, Jer, orangehatman Fowler and hansler in YOUR territory!!!love all you guys!

I was wondering why you weren't using a 410 or 22 to shoot but of course like you said the noise would startle the cows. Even having a silencer on an air rifle...so you must've had to be real quiet. The farm I grew up on we had Beefalo mix...and when pregnant they were mean as hell. Never ate the pigeons but definitely used the wrist rocket lol. What a beautiful brookie. So delicious. Our stream are full of so much trout. As always great video sir. My sons and even now my daughter all sit and watch the new episodes together. So if you decide to do a 'never say no' series our cabin has plenty of room - maybe do a catch and cook with the kids and/or wife. We'd love to host you! West Michigan is beautiful. Cheers to another great survival series with excellent info each time!

really enjoyed this video you two together are getting funnier every episode haha. Best part I think was seeing and hearing you pull out that slammer of a brookie really nice trout. Grew up raising racing Homer pigeons and ate them from a kid the gizzards are good fried in butter. Later we sold our birds to Mike Tyson and they made that show Tysons Corner with out birds pretty nuts. anyway great video man really enjoyed this. Ate 4 large pigeon size quail on my last moose trip in one sitting with bread, wine and broccolirabe

Very cool seeing the Ocularis slingshot and the air rifle out. I've got an Ocularis and I've got a Gamo air rifle myself. Also cool to see these catch/clean/cook videos. So many pigeon and rabbit hunting videos on here are just pest control and reducing numbers. I've always hunted only what I intend to eat. I went rabbit hunting as a pest control measure once and it just felt weird not making use of the animals I pulled the trigger on. I absolutely understand why folks try to reduce invasive species numbers but it's not my personal preference.

Great vid! Looking forward to the weigh-ins! We used to hunt pigeons back in the day and the farmers said their poop would make some cows get sick. And the cows would also eat the food that had pigeon feathers and would actually cause them to choke! He wanted every bird gone! We used to split up at each silo and wait for the flocks to go from each one. Its crazy but there would even be a spy bird. He would fly high and overlook to see if we were still there. We would hide and he would return with the whole flock. The things you learn out in the wild haha
