Las Vegas is known to be the city of excess, but after the party, someone has to clean up. And, in Vegas, that means figuring out how to deal with an overwhelming abundance of food waste.
MGM Resorts International, which owns most of the Vegas strip, has been trying to rebrand itself as sustainable. Their efforts seem to be working: in 2018, the U.S. EPA recognized their food recovery efforts by awarding them with a Food Recovery Challenge Award.
But can Vegas ever truly be sustainable? VICE News went to Sin City to find out.

@@JaylaStarr Pigs cannibalize each other's corpses a lot, if given the opportunity ... and thus far, no Prion-like disease has yet to manifest among the pig population--domestic OR feral, as far as we know. So maybe it doesn't work that way for them? Just food for thought (no pun intended). EDIT: Now that I'm thinking about it, the difference might be that pigs are naturally omnivores, while cows are purely herbivores (with a few rare exceptions sometimes, due to dietary issues).
@markfryer9880
@markfryer9880 2 жыл бұрын
@@YeenQueenTTV I think that you are right about the omnivore/herbivore reasoning. A cow is not designed to eat meat, especially uncooked meat as was the case in the UK. A pig is as you say an omnivore and in the wild will canibalise a fellow pig carcass. What was ommited from the story was that the food scraps are all cooked down before being served to the pigs. I say this because I believe that this was the same pig farm as featured in Mike Rowe's Dirty Jobs TV series.

Anyone who's ever planned a wedding, a family reunion, or even a funeral banquet knows how hard it is to get the quantities right. A particular item will be the most popular and eaten completely while another item will go 80% untouched. Professional buffets with lots of customers can do a better job at matching supply to demand just from experience, but it's still a crapshoot.

To Him belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is on the earth. Who is it that can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what is [presently] before them and what will be after them, and they encompass not a thing of His knowledge except for what He wills. The elementary school I attended in an area that wasn't exactly in the rural, urban, or suburban area, but had been fairly rural beforehand---had a small, outdoor hog farm owned by some family on a street directly behind the school. They fed those hogs our leftovers. That is why they had canned beets on the menu so very often, I think. Hardly any kids like those, but they are good for pigs as well as people. We were required to scrape our trays into the garbage cans, pour any left-over milk into those same cans, remove all plastic and napkins and milk cartons and put them in the other trash can and put our tray in the window to be washed. When the hog farm quit operating, I thought it was illegal to do that anymore for health reasons and such. Something that really made me think that was when I was grown, many years later, I married and my husband wanted to raise some out on our place. I thought of asking the big grocery store for milk going out of date, and I was given some by the kid working in dairy. Well, those pigs loved that skim milk and they got so pretty, white and clean looking and fast. They didn't sunburn and get dry anymore during that time and for a while afterward, and it was like dirt didn't want to stick to them. It had to be good for them, or they wouldn't have looked so great so fast. I had put it all in an extra freezer and gave the three of them all a gallon or two a day until it was all gone. This went on for a couple of weeks or so. When I went back to get some more, the dairy guy told me it was illegal to give or sell it (I was willing to buy some at a very reduced rate), and that they had to pour it down the drain, and the kid just didn't know that. I told him how good it was for the pigs and what a stupid, wasteful shame that policy was. Those pigs never forgot I had given them that skim milk and they would scream and scream at me every time they ever caught site of me. They never screamed like that for my husband who brought them their regular feed, and procured some wilting produce and even some unsold donuts from other places of business, but they would try to bust our eardrums if they ever caught a glimpse of me from the distance.

gwvaio Maybe not, buffets specialize in predicting how much they need to make each day to minimize waste and maximize profits.... Also, unlike restaurants buffets have the ability to let stuff sit, and mix in new stuff to keep it out.... Also, he probably does not count food left on plates, once it gets taken off the line he considers it eaten (probably, that is an assumption on my part).....

FYI pigs' digestive systems are tough as nails. It's good to filter out stuff like napkins and silverware as much as possible, but if some ends up in the trough it's not gonna kill a pig. One of the most dangerous parts of pig farming is slipping in the muck, because anyone not young and spry enough to get up quickly can literally get eaten by a hoard of pigs; clothes, bones, everything gone. It's actually a way people have disposed of murder victims in rural areas. But yeah, pigs are tough.

Lmao that's perfectly fine for pigs. The more in the sun they are, the more dirty they will be. Elephants do the same.

I grew up in Ireland and every hotel and restaurant had arrangements with local farmers to collect food waste either to be boiled up and fed to the pigs or in some cases to be composted. Very little went to waste . Also " sell by " dates were unheard of and people used their nose or hands to tell if meat, vegetables or milk were " off " . And NO plastic packaging - grocers , butchers and others supplied their produce in paper bags which easily biodegraded and posed no threat of choking or intestinal obstruction to animals.

@@hugof3243 Not denying that . I used the past tense throughout . But I personally still ignore the dates on packaging and use my eyes and nose to judge how safe an item is to consume ( I am currently through a vacuume packed coffee that " expired " in the mid 90s !! ). I am in my 70s now and never hospitalised , don't have a GP and took about 21 sick days in my entire working life. Sorry but can't change the habits of a lifetime.

I used to live in a small touristic town in the Caribbean... People empty their colon in the morning before going to the beach. At the beach they are swimming, snorkeling and surfing in their own feces. Those feces are eaten by the same Lobsters, that tourists eat for dinner. Recycling!

I work at an army defac on a small training base surrounded by livestock farms and one of our full time cadre lives here and raises pigs. So we have a big plastic bin where we throw leftovers in and every morning around breakfast he swings by and picks up the previous day’s leftovers to bring to his pigs. So technically we have zero food waste and he has happy pigs. He offered to sell us one at a discount or even donate some but unfortunately because of regulations we aren’t allowed to take it since he’s not an approved source.
