I was thrilled today to find the Pikas who inhabit the talus pile near Angel's Rest Trail parking lot actually survived our heat apocalypse of last weekend. Portland hit 116 and the ranger at the trailhead thought it hit 111 where we stood about a quarter mile from these Pikas. I personally questioned whether they would live because temperatures above 77 are lethal to them. They surely must be finding cold water seeping deep in the rock pile to keep their enzymes from denaturing with the heat.
