I use Dutch formation, but with my own modifications that are adopted from Swedes. In center I have 5 pike units and 4 musket arranged in this fashion: pike-shot-pike-shot-pike-shot-pike-shot-pike, where shot units are few paces moved to the back, so that the enemy who came very close is entangled in fight with pikes while my shot units pour constantly at him, even from point blank. All units are in square-like deep formations. In that way I assure they will not run right away and have enough reserves in back ranks to fill the gaps. And also they can endure prolonged fight in that formation. This formation is good against combined attacks of enemy cavalry and pikemen. This is Swedish influence: At each flank I have musket unit but now not in square but 2 ranked line, behind it in close support of pistols are 2 units of ''lobsters'' - armored cavalry armed with pistols. So each flank musket unit is supported with 2 units of cavalry who shoots pistols over their heads. In that way I have very good fire superiority on flanks against enemy cavalry or infantry. Sometimes I use 2 units of Hessian organ artillery and put it in center between two pike units instead of 1 musket unit. They are devastating - killing more than 600 men. The rest of 2 to 4 units are in reserve. Usually zweihander units or very high quality pike units.

+Sam Packinpah was a classical composer Hey can you get the archer units to fire overhead of friendly units in this game? I wanted to have a pike and shot unit on steroids. Namely muskets in front, pikemen supporting them, and behind the musket units archer units.
@gorankatic40000bc9 жыл бұрын
+lastswordfighter none archers can shoot overhead in Medieval 2 and its mods, but also you risk some losses because they can hit the back of your friendlies so I recommend placing them on higher ground behind your front line and also redirecting their fire to enemy musket troops who stay further back of enemy main line of pikemen who are closing in on you. Archers are pretty good in this game - having 2 hit points. You also need cavalry to pursue the enemy. And try my formation - combination of Dutch and Swedish tactic.

Very instructive, and very cool looking. I'm sure this video made many people interested in this mod. I have a remark to make : I noticed that the musketeers fired rather rapidly. Is it to simulate the fact that each rank would fire in succession ?
@geoffreyM2TW9 жыл бұрын
Filibert I have made some relevant commentary in the tactical guide in the mod. The engine was not made for pike & shot battles, or perhaps the ideas were there but they were left somewhat unfinished. Firing by rotation of ranks is oddly the slowest way to fire in the game, instead of being the fastest. So to achieve higher rates of fire (as the Dutch musketeers do in this videoclip) we had to remove that attribute and designate the unit as "highly trained". Of course they load so fast it is ridiculous to watch. The pikemen also march as if they are on amphetamines. Sadly, we cannot do much about these things. The animations in M2TW were not really made with the 17th century in mind.
@BismuthDwarf8 жыл бұрын
Thank you. Another question : was it really necessary to remove swords from pikemen ? Sure, in the original Medieval 2 pikemen would often drop their pikes to draw their swords and lose their reach advantage, but you could order them to form the spear wall again and this would make them retrieve their pike and use them again. I find pikemen OP if they never lose their pike.

Sometimes these tactics work with Shogun 2. On the other hand, Shogun 2 battles are so fast, it is better to keep the matchlock units safe on top of impassable obstacles if possible. These are real life tactics by the way, they don't always work in the game as they worked in reality, because there is no real rotation of ranks in the game. Also historically, the Japanese did not really adopt these tactics. It appears they deployed large formations of thousands of men in which all kinds of units were mixed up in various arrangements. I have seen some drawing of these large formations (tiger formation, crane formation, etc) but am not sure if they are historically accurate. The Japanese indeed were successful at using matchlock units when they could be protected behind fences or walls. We must also remember that the matchlock arquebuses had a shorter range than muskets so that enemy units had a better chance to close in.

After the bayonet was invented, pikemen were phased out. The musket fire was a bit of a deterrent against cavalry in itself, once musketeers became numerous enough on the battlefield. Then with the bayonet, they could also be like mini-pikemen but all of them armed with muskets. Firing by rank was introduced by the Dutch and volley fire by Gustavus Adolphus, so indeed the ingredients were all there.

Would be interesting to see if it's better to break up an army's cavalry into separate units attached to every pike and shot formation instead of putting cavalry on the wings. In lots of battles gaps open up between the battle line during combat, presenting opportunities for cavalry to hit enemy units in the flank & rear.
@geoffreyM2TW4 жыл бұрын
In the painting of the Battle of White Mountain there is cavalry between the tercios. This arrangement is sometimes referred to as the German formation. Nonetheless, I have found that once enemy units get in between the tercios they get a morale handicap and often break, especially when fired at. I have made a couple of videos with the Italian Wars mod where you can see how enemy infantry breaks when they enter the space between tercios - here for example kzbin.info/www/bejne/d3alg5eMatuJj9k at 7:04. Let's Rock! You'd think I would say the Dutch formation is the best. But nah. Being a Dutchman myself, I can come up with a very valid reason for not employing a lot of heavy artillery. Cannon are expensive. What if we lose a few pieces during a retreat or if we lose a battle? Who is going to explain that to the state treasurer? We can easily train a few thousands of new musketeers and quickly. Compared to cannon, muskets are cheap.

What if enemy charge at our musketeers in Dutch formation ?
@geoffreyM2TW8 жыл бұрын
+İnebolu Balıkçısı In reality, most of the time musketeers took cover behind stone walls and hedges even when in Dutch formation. Maurice of Nassau assumed they would be firing from cover when he wrote about this formation. If they were fighting in a pitched battle and cover was not available, presumably the pikemen would have to help them out. They were nearby. A company 8 deep was probably only 10-12 men broad, a few steps from the pikemen and they were covered.

+İnebolu Balıkçısı Guessing from contemporary descriptions, they just moved forward to counter the enemy pikemen with the musketeers on the flanks firing. If they spread out, they would block the field of fire of the musketeers. But in the Danish formation the musketeers would end up unable to fire, because the pikemen were more spread out. The Danish formation was not used by anyone else, so the Dutch formation, with the musketeers always having a free field of fire, was probably a better arrangement.

@geoffreyM2TW5 жыл бұрын
Sadly I am not an expert. I think their army was more Polish style, i.e. without many pikemen but mostly musketeers and cavalry plus lots of cheap rag tag units of all kinds. I think their tactics were mostly based on numbers. We always read their armies were very numerous and they could probably afford that by using unconventional methods such as slave soldiers (the Janissaries) and forcing vassals to contribute forces and so on. My feeling is that their victories were not necessarily the result of good tactics but often due to numbers, although the Janissaries being committed full time to training for war would have been decent soldiers. The Sipahis were similarly sons of wealthy landlords with an obligation to train for war and take part in campaigns.

Don't know much about it either. Just chanced a Wikipedia look-up. According to them, it was the Turks who first started using muskets in massed formations combined with a lot of artillery. It says the Turks started using matchlocks as early as 1440. Now I don't have time to look up sources but everyone remembers that the Turks took Constantinople by using the first usable heavy cannon. The original black powder hand cannon was invented in China in the 12th century. Becoming a rather popular weapon in the 13th century, it spread westward across Asia during the 14th century. And logically the Turks were the first on this side of the world to become acquainted with firearms so I'd say the Turks had a powerful and efficient army because they used large numbers… of highly trained, musket armed Janissaries. And cannon.

Sadly, it just doesn't work in Medieval 2. Cavalry is SOOOO overpowering that a full cavalry army can rout a balanced army with just 1 frontal charge. The enemy routs, before I can flank them! The only thing I found working is a Tercio styled army. Every 4 pikemen forming a square has 1 gunmen "guarrisoned". Even then, the casualty is too great to be effective in a campaign. I understand cavalry domination is historically accurate in the Early Middie Age, but pikemen in the Late Middle Age should have heavy armours.

The vanilla version of M2TW is not really appropriate for the Renaissance period. Probably no one ever gets to that point anyway. As I comment in my latest videoclips, we managed to get the AI to keep its formation but it was not working: Because the pikemen were advancing slowly waiting for the musketeers who were loading up, but because the pikemen were advancing the musketeers then would stop loading up and hurry up to catch up with the pikemen, never ever firing until they got to pistol-shot range. The result was that the AI advanced as a decent looking formation, not perfect but not bad, but slowly and under constant fire and was cut to shreds. In the end we opted for the AI to rush the player with cavalry and pikes as you guessed, because that caused more damage. If Creative Assembly could come up with a post-Renaissance kingdoms campaign that would allow musketeers to fire on their advance, that would solve this problem and it would be fantastic of course!

Lucy Pedersen well you see warhammer is a fantasy game and the empire is based on the HRE so take of that as you will

Jerec 12 I am aware of that, just wanted to state it kind of works when magic isn't being used.

This is all BS. The Swiss where the founder of every Pikeformation after. The Swiss where the first one who won battles whitout cavallery and musketes. The German Landsknechte are a cheap imitation of the Swiss Tactic. The Spanish Tercios also have theire origin from the Swiss Tactic which was in fact very simple. The Vorhut(Scouts) thry find the foe and the Terrain where the Swiss would fight. The Vorhut attacked the foe and keeping them busy until the Mainforce known as Gewalthaufen lance a furiouse, brutal and with no mercy attack, then last but not least the Nachhut attacks the enemy and gave him the rest. Swiss Guards of the Pope are highly regardet for theire fighting skills and every enemy knows a Swiss never capitulate and will fight till death against anyone.
