Man, that “war game” analogy really helped me understand Miyamoto’s viewpoint on the pikmin. I remember seeing his comments about how he wanted the player to lament over even a single pikmin death, and although I do feel sadness over pikmin deaths, I’ve never understood it on the level that Miyamoto seems to want to convey. I think he even compared it to Saving Private Ryan at some point. Once you equated it to a war story in this video, I started to understand it more. This man just did a pikmin 2 review without mentioning how OP purple pikmin are. Judging by the gameplay footage, he probably never realized that either. It's funny because the biggest concern of pikmin 2 in the review (of it being a chore to play through) can be solved by just one-shotting everything with purples. It's way more fun that way.
@lukers98194 жыл бұрын
I agree that I am surprised that he didn't notice it, but for the opposite reason. I personally feel that purple pikmin made the game way too easy, and even took the fun out of trying to figure out how to take out a new enemy. What do you do when you meet a new enemy in Pikmin 2? Doesn't matter what it is (excluding bosses), just throw purple pikmin at it and stomp it into submission. There are good parts about pikmin 2 (mainly the piklopedia/treasure hoard and high enemy count), but it was bogged down by some heavy flaws in the lack of a day limit, purple pikmin, and caves (these took a far bigger % of the game than they should have). But that is my opinion, and it is obviously subjective.
@Glockenspheal4 жыл бұрын
I also feel purples break the game in a bad way, they are just too powerful, and red in contrast are just less useful than any other type, they serve as just white and purple fodder. Here's a breakdown of every type and how to balance them. Reds: initial type of Pikmin, 1.5 attack multiplier which is good, but not great like purples. fire hazards are a joke, they can all be deactivated in some way, even fiery Bulblax can be killed with other types with water or just by throwing purples at it. great fodder for whites and purples tho. A great way to balance them would be: make fire hazards non-destroyable, and make them less plentiful to balance. Make purples not stun and lose shockwave and 2x attack multiplier. Yellows: Electricity is deadly in pikmin 2, if you don't want to risk any pikmin, yellows are super useful, as well as they can reach high places and break specific barriers. They don't need much balancing but it would help to make electricity not as deadly, why is it so dangerous?! Blues: They traverse water, which is abundant and often a permanent hazard. Most balanced type in the game imo. White: super agile, can find hidden treasure, poison geysers are continuos and can only be deactivate with whites, can be used as fodder to kill enemies with poison, no doubt the second most useful type. If you balance the other types, it becomes more reasonable, maybe lower the poison damage they do. Purples: Make battles a joke, if an enemy can get damaged by stun damage, they are done in seconds, even bosses like the Emperor Bulblax, Raging Bloyster and Beady long legs can be killed super easily with them, deal insane damage with shockwaves and have a natural 2x attack multiplier, they stun enemies, carry 10 times their weight making them quite useful for multitasking, clearly the most powerful and useful type, completely outclass the red ones since they can do everything they can but better. Remove all stun, shockwave and attack effects, they are already quite good by being a multi-task tool, maybe keep the stun mechanic, but nerf it a bit so it doesn't last 2 years.
@WaterKirby19944 жыл бұрын
@@Glockenspheal Pikmin 2's way of balancing White & Purple Pikmin types was making them rare & much harder to get than other types. Purple Pikmin literally fall under the too good to use category as you need 100 of them to get a certain treasure & it should be noted that they are essentially glass cannons. Purple Pikmin can be killed by anything that kills Pikmin & are slow in exchange for their immense strength. Besides you're forgetting about Bulbmin the rarest type of Pikmin as they can only be used in certain caves. They are immune to Electricity, Water, Poison, & Fire however you can't keep them when you leave a cave so they should be the priority for Candypop Buds so that they can still be with you in a weaker form. Red Pikmin have always been the Normal Pikmin Footsoldiers in every game because of them being the 1st type you get. A good way to make them useful later on would be to introduce a Volcanic Terrain that most Pikmin Colors can't cross much like water is in the games.
@Glockenspheal4 жыл бұрын
Sure they are harder to get than other pikmin, but they are so powerful and useful that their positives greatly outweight(pun intended) the negatives. They are glass-cannons to anything they can't kill first, which aren't many things. Bulmin are awesome yeah, I really like how they balanced them out. And red pikmin are not just normal footsoldiers, the only game where they are almost useless is pikmin 2 since fire hazards are very very forgiving and can be dealt without them, and purple pikmin utterly outclass them in combat, heck, purple pikmin make combat pointless most of the game. In pikmin 1 and 3, red pikmin are the absolute best way to deal with enemies (ignoring sprays in 3) since they are stronger and the fire hazards in those games are sort of permanent. The only thing I'd ask is to nerf purple's combat capabilities, the stun is way too long and powerful on its own, it can kill an Emperor Bulblax before it even comes out of the ground.
@WaterKirby19944 жыл бұрын
@@Glockenspheal The Emperor Bulbaxes in Pikmin 2 were weak compared to the Monster that served as the final boss of the 1st game. I can guarantee that the Supreme Emperor Bulbax would doom a squad of Purples if they ever met in combat. I don't think Purple Stunning would have an effect because of its sheer size, while it's attacks would prove most devastating for purples because of how slow they are. Had there been more enemies immune to purple stun or made so that purples would be in for a rough fight you wouldn't be saying they were overpowered. There were some cases like Man at Legs where you really wouldn't want to waste Purples. You can't get Purples from an Onion & Violet Candypop Buds stop appearing everywhere except 2 cases once you have a certain amount. I personally knew there would be a treasure that only 100 Purple Pikmin could lift at some point so I was always careful with my Purples & as a result rarely sent them into danger. Even after I learned how overkill they can be I still hesitate sending them to areas with Electric Hazards or certain enemies.

Yeah, I've never gotten into the first game that much because I find the time limit too stressful. I can't help but constantly worry that if I make a mistake, I'll be unable to catch up and that'll be it, game over. Pikmin 2 is my favourite because it's difficult, but rewarding. I love scouring every floor of the caves for treasure, with Olimar's log and the Ship's sales pitch for each treasure being my real reward for finding each one. I guess I might not have that same opinion if I had ever failed repeatedly at the caves, getting to the end only to not have enough Pikmin to beat the boss or carry the treasure, but I never had that experience in the caves. They were certainly tough, but the difficulty ramped up slowly enough that my skill was able to grow alongside it and the game never threw anything at me I was not capable of.

I also love collecting the treasures and reading Olimar's notes on them, and the different species on the planet. I also like having Louis there, so I can tackle levels however I want. Pikmin is probably my favorite video game series of all time; it is a masterclass of virtually everything I adore in a game and I’ve stuck with this series since the first entry. Here’s some thoughts from a longtime fan of the series. I didn’t like Pikmin 2 as much when I first played it; I still adored it because, well it’s Pikmin, yet I preferred the first game for a lot of the reasons you discussed in the video. But as I became a more seasoned fan of the series, I came to respect it so much more as a deep and meaty challenge for veterans of the series. Nowadays, it’s easily my favorite as a big Pikmin lore junkie. And lemme tell ya, waiting for Pikmin 3 for like 9 years and getting to play it on release was an unreal experience. Not to mention how absolutely stunning this game’s visuals are 6 years later. I also found the focus on the main overworld areas and less so on caves a satisfying return to form, and a soft reimplementation of the time limit a good addition if a little flawed. But without a doubt, the lore, world building, and theories surrounding Pikmin is my favorite part of this series. There’s hours worth of content theorizing how plants and machines formed a strange symbiosis in the Pikmin universe, how Onions, Candypop Buds, and Pikmin are all different stages of a single species, and even how Olimar might be hunted by an entity featured in all of the games. It’s what keeps my excitement and hope for the series still alive despite the painful radio silence time after time. Post Video Edit: HOLY CRAP SCRUFFY! I LOVE HIM!
@WaterKirby19944 жыл бұрын
I always preferred the cave system of Pikmin 2, & if you want a time based challenge beating Citadel of Spiders grants you the key to Challenge Mode. It's unfortunate that it was never brought up in this video. While I admit Pikmin 2 should have had a time limit when trying to repay the debt, being able to spend hundreds of days with your Pikmin saves feels really good. Still it's unfortunate the concept of caves wasn't explored much further with challenges like Cave of Ordeals or Pit of 100 Trials. Piklopedia & Louie's cooking notes really should have returned. My biggest disappointment with Pikmin 3 was how so many species from Pikmin 2 didn't make it into Pikmin 3. I remember during the long wait for Pikmin 3 thinking we would get 7 Map Areas & dozens of caves. I knew Pink Pikmin were going to be capable of flight, I just didn't think they would be anything like they ended up being, I had the expectation they would look like normal pikmin only Hotpink & with wings. My hopes for Pikmin 4 are we get most of the species to return with an even larger scale cave system spread across 7 overworld maps that would be quite large for the most part. Perhaps we could have 10 Types of Pikmin play a role in the game even if 1 of them were Bulbmin? It's actually surprising that Pikmin 3 was 1 of the few 1st or 2nd Party Wii U games to never get a Switch Port as of March 2020.

@mogllion4 жыл бұрын
I love the video, but as a long time Pikmin fan, I do have some stuff I want to go over. Pikmin games are built on the challenge they present along side their puzzles, they have and will always be collectathons, so the games will almost always feel repetitive to most people who don't love being completionists to a degree. There is also a huge divide between the fans of the series as some people love the caves, feeling like they add more to the games, and some people despise the caves, feeling like they take away from the games. Starting with Pikmin 1 you can complete the game without getting every ship part, though its only a few parts so there isn't a reason not to get them all unless you are running out of time. Pikmin 2 doesn't focus on stressing the player in that there isn't a limited number of days you have to beat the game, instead it was removed to help open the game up to newer consumers and widen the appeal of the game, with this change they added an optional ending with lots of extra treasure to collect so that people who enjoy the game play or want more of a challenge could be rewarded. They also introduced sprays which you can get by collecting berries that continuously re-spawn, these sprays can be used to either greatly buff your Pikmin's speed and power or to turn an enemy to stone making them unable to move for a short period of time. It is recommended that if you don't like losing Pikmin to the many challenging monsters, then you should collect a lot of these sprays to make the game easier to traverse. Pikmin 3 does have some nice melodies and everyone should be allowed to like whatever music they want, but I will always believe Pikmin 2's music design was much better. There is an entire video someone created that goes over the dynamic music in Pikmin 2 and how doing small things will alter how you hear the music with it adding, dropping, and even switching parts of the tracks out all based on what you are doing at any given moment, but the way Pikmin 2 handles this is on a completely different level to other games as for the longest time I never noticed the subtle changes in the track while I was playing because it changes the melody so seamlessly that I couldn't hear the changes until I was focusing on them. I honestly wish there were more people who are fans of this series as its one of my all time favorites and I still go back and play Pikmin 2 periodically every year

I was thinking the same thing. I found the time limit of Pikmin 1 and the waterwraith to be incredibly stressful. Pikmin 2 has way less stress to it as you can take as long as you want. If you fail at a cave, you just waste some of your own time, but you don't have to restart the entire game.

It's supposed to be Olimar's response to Ai no Uta, how he regrets not being able to tell the pikmin how much they meant to him. "But we'll never ask you to love us" vs ""And I didn't say that I loved you - I'm sorry". Where's Ai no Uta is a sad song in a cutsy disguise, this one is just sad. To the point that the title translates to "The Tears Overflowed". If you happen to see this and you have the time, please look into the song. As I said, it adds a lot to the story and just makes Olimar an even better character.

Thank God Pikmin 3 is coming to the Switch. I couldn’t finish the game, because of the Wii-U’s questionable Gamepad. - Edit: After playing Pikmin 3 on the switch, I can say that it’s not my favorite Pikmin game. Graphics are beautiful, the bosses are incredible, but my problem with the game is the urgency of Kopai’s food supply. Pikmin showed urgency of Olimar repairing his ship in 30 days, giving you plenty of time to collect all the parts. But Pikmin 3 took urgency to the extreme. You can collect maybe one fruit in a day, and then when the day ends, you see like 4 or 5 bottles of juice consumed. That just makes completing the game much more stressful. Pikmin 4 even pokes fun at this in the beginning of the game where the Rescue Corps wonder about their food supply, and the captain says to not worry about that. Which makes Pikmin 4 the “real” Pikmin 3.

I love the pressure of Pikmin 1 but I was obsessed with the collecting mechanics so Pikmin 2 is perfect. Pikmin 3 feels like it tries to do both and while I know a lot of people love it, I still prefer the earlier games. Pikmin 4 is obviously an evolution of Pikmin 2 with a story and I'm in love with it so far. I think regardless of which gameplay you like, there's a game for you! I honestly love that they all feel different.

You know. It's not often I find someone like you. I've always loved analysis and retrospectives. Though not many do it justice. You perfectly captured and described pikmin in a way no one else ever has. You never mared it down with contant attempts at being 'funny', or making some random reference too an event without context. You just rike down Pikmin. Telling it's message. Even seeing all the people come together at the end was a great sight! Showing how this series has changed so much, but kept everyone together.

A little sad you didn't even briefly mention the hidden details of a deep lore potentially being revealed to us through subtle hints and optional text suggesting there's a bigger story going under. Umibozu might just be a theory but there's a lot of evidence supporting it's validity, but even if you dispute the evidence there is something going on with Louie and the planet that seems to have the power to crash your ship every time. There lurks a something deeper than the depths of the submerged castle, and I'm absolutely obsessed with wanting to learn more about the world of PNF-404, how it got to this state, where the humans went, what exactly are these creatures that now inhabit the land, what secret does the planet hide, why is there such an emphasis on Louie doing terrible things. (also the Pikmin 2 emails tell a great optional story that really brings out the personality of characters, but its a shame it goes unappreciated. Pikmin Characters are surprisingly deep if you take the time to read the optional text. Olimar may be the deepest nintendo character of all time.

I like that the day limit was removed in Pikmin 2. As a kid, I was scared by most of that game. I mainly stayed above-ground and made more pikmins. I explored the caves very slowly. If there had been a day limit, I would not have liked it. I liked that I could explore at my own en pace! When I played the original Pikmin, I found that the day limit stressed me out. This was incredibly well done! Pikmin is one of my favourite series and I'm excited for the 4th one! It's insane to think we've waited longer between 3's original release and 4 than 2 and 3. I think we have different views of what makes a game stressful as I think Pikmin's 1 timer and Pikmin 2's waterwraith are some of the most stressful things in the series. I liked Pikmin's 2 lack of timer and 3's pseudo timer. Those games are still difficult and fun without Pikmin's 1 timer. I would argue Pikmin 2 has is just the most difficult game to complete overall, while Pikmin 3 has the most difficult final boss.

I'm a minute in and my heart is already aching. I love this series so much, I'd say TOO much if it wasn't a "transitional game" for me, representing something I adored in my childhood that stays with me to this day. This game means a lot to me, it's on equal ground with The Last of Us, even though I wasn't aware of this when I watched playthroughs of both as a child.
@Renigade685 жыл бұрын
The thing you said about Pikmin 3's fruit system feeling less rewarding on subsequent playthroughs is something I actually felt on my first playthrough, I lived through the 9 year gap between 2 and 3 and had a lot of time to go back and play the first 2 and "git gud" at Pikmin, so the only moment where I actually felt a bit of tension in 3 was when Louie stole the fruit, the rest of the game was smooth sailing with a fruit buffer that never got close to running out, the average Pikmin 1 playthrough for a first timer takes about 25 days, I think that's perfect, it gives some wiggle room for slow players or those who had to spend time recovering from major losses but not so much that you ever feel like you can afford to screw around, in Pikmin 3 though with all fruit collected there is a day limit of 100, for those aiming to just beat the game and not bother with 100% the average first playthrough is about 30 days, for those going for 100% it's about 40 days, in either case it's less then half of the days you have to work with, that'd be like if Pikmin 1 gave you 60 days, the tension would be non-existent, I understand that Pikmin 3 has you making your own time limit with the fruit system so it makes sense for it to be a bit more lenient then Pikmin 1 but it goes too far in the leniency direction IMO, honestly I'd rather the fruits have just been unnecessary collectibles like the treasure in Pikmin 2, I know you took issue with those but I take much greater issue with Pikmin 3 giving the false impression of having an ever changing time limit which is a really tantalizing proposition to me but in reality you're only ever stressed for time once when Louie swipes your fruit, anyways tangent over... Pikmin 2 is my favourite but I like it for reasons kinda separate from Pikmin 1's core themes, I really do love the limited time aspect from the original and was excited to see it return in a sort for Pikmin 3, which is part of why I'm so disappointed at it's poor execution, If caves like in Pikmin 2 do return in a future Pikmin game, but in one where time matters, I think a good compromise would be slowing the clock down by a factor of 10, instead of completely halting it; 13 mins on overworld=130 mins in a cave.

Pikmin 2 is my favorite video game ever, endlessly replayable, beautiful presentation, amazing addicting gameplay, great sense of difficulty for the truest of veterans, and probably the most immersive game and setting I’ve ever been plunged into, and it’s so tightly done with some forgiving aspects that do make the game easier and rewarding, I think that’s what Pikmin truly is, rewarding, through all the refinement of your skill and it’s not handed to you, and that’s why I believe it’s genuinely the best designed game series I’ve ever had the pleasure of growing up with.

Yay, Scruffy! It always makes me so happy when some of my favorite content creators work together like this. These retrospectives are great fun to watch, and get me thinking a lot about game design, and the industry as a whole. I really enjoyed Pikmin 2 for its focused challenges and resource management over time management- I can see why you dislike it, especially given how samey the caves can be. This is a shame, since- as someone who's dabbled with making custom caves- there are a lot of themes and resources to use to make each one feel different, which just weren't utilized in the normal game.

The Pikmin series is one of my favorite games ever. I was just getting back into games when the Gamecube came out and this was exactly what I was looking for. I can't explain why I love this game so much but the aesthetics are so pleasant but also dangerous. I was very happy to get the Wii copies where I can use the remote instead of a controller which I think has become a necessity. The sequal was also amazing, I still haven't fully finished it, some of the later levels are very challenging. I have the other 2 games but am waiting to play them like a fine aged wine. I know they will be great.

I find Pikmin always really interesting as it's the sort of narrative through-line that Nintendo usually likes tucking into their games brought out to the forefront. Kirby has constant little tidbits of being darker than it appears tucked into its lore, Metroid usually tucks its implications and darker elements into data logs or environmental implications, even games like Zelda or Paper Mario usually tuck their darker elements in specific narrative sections or areas and then go back to being fun adventure time or goofy slapstick rpg fun times. Pikmin is a constant addressing of these darker elements, of the responsibility you hold over your troops and family, of how small your stature in the world is and overcoming the hostile environment around you. Death and loss is not just implied or brought up, it's ever-present in a way that many Nintendo titles tap into, but short of Majora's Mask, rarely make their focus.Even as banter makes the characters a bit goofier and more light hearted, that sort of bleakness toward the exploration of the planet remains... and I think that's a very solid focus. Not necessarily one that'd be all that financially successful, but one that a fanbase can really develop from. You do an amazing job at illustrating that. Excellent work on this one, you can feel the motivation and inspiration that went into both the vid and your passion toward analyzing the series. Zelda Game & Watch Retrospective when

I've always loved the Pikmin series. As a kid, when my family first got Pikmin on the Wii (the new play control version of the game), I thought the Pikmin were the cutest most precious things in the world. Which is part of why it was so sad when there were losses. The first game always made me a little anxious (I once spent almost a full day chasing a wogpole, only to realize how much time was wasted) and even though I'd watched my brothers play it I never did a full playthrough myself until many years later, after I'd played Pikmin 2. Pikmin 2 is simultaneously the best and worse Pikmin game. Its no-time-limit gameplay very much went against the original game, but the amount of sheer content the game has is tremendous! There's a ton of different enemies, some old, some new... and every treasure you encounter was an exciting discovery during the first playthrough, you never knew what to expect. The lack of a time limit removes the stakes, but they still have a day cycle. Because of this, you can still get that sense of replaying it to get a more efficient time. And the difficulty of the caves can be cruel sometimes... but that just further encourages the player to get better and better at the game. For me, I hate when Pikmin die so I try my very best to ensure their safety while still taking necessary risks to not waste so much time... I've gotten to the point where I can take on the hardest caves and bosses with very few deaths. With easier caves, no deaths at all. And then of course there's the Piklopedia... the amount of effort put into the game is stunning. They have multiple descriptions for each creature (one from Olimar, and a more comical one about cooking for Louie) and for each treasure (this time with the Ship instead of Louie) and it does wonders for selling the idea that these are people who are unfamiliar with this alien world and trying to make sense of it. Its basically a huge collection of pure lore! Pikmin 3 isn't as long as the other two, and I wouldn't call it my favorite Pikmin game, but its certainly my favorite in terms of the mechanics. The controls are so much more polished than the previous games, and the Pikmin AI is significantly improved. Though the story is short and not the most exciting thing ever, its still arguably more story driven than the other two games (though not really... Pikmin 1 is almost entirely story, just not the same way). It's too short, sadly, but I really like how relaxing it is. Its definitely easier than the other games, to some extent, but the ambience and the music is absolutely stunning! I love how it can sometimes rain. You'd expect rain to be dangerous for Pikmin or something, but rain has always been very relaxing to me, since I live in a very rainy area. And the deeper water, and riding lilypads is a really cool concept. The bosses are great too. They seem menacing and deadly during the first playthrough, but as you play more you learn how to deal with them and you can find ways to defeat them easier and quicker with no deaths. And if its too easy, then you can always try your hand at the challenge mode levels... getting platinum on those is frustratingly difficult (though they're probably way easier in two player). There's not as much content as I wish their was, but I loved it nonetheless. I also loved how they didn't stop you every five minutes to tell you information you already know like in Pikmin 2. Can't wait for Pikmin 4... and I really wish they had HD revamped remakes for Pikmin 1 and 2 with more polished mechanics like in Pikmin 3.

I had an afternoon for the first time in a while, and being the huge Pikmin 3 fan that I am, I took an hour to sit and watch this in full. To start, I feel that I can say to the fullest extent that this is the best summary of pikmin insight that I've witnessed. Each game had the level of detail confined into the time limited to its section that, I'm sure the community could agree, made it perfect for the required bits to mention for all games. The community presentation at the end was just the icing on the cake; it took what the entire video culminated into and twisted towards the perspectives of the people who are also passionate about the topic. (I nearly screamed when Scruffy started speaking but that's besides the point.) I couldn't agree with the claims in this video more, (especially the ones about Pikmin 1) and I anticipate the future of this franchise just as much as I hope anyone who reads this comment does. And of course, thank you, Liam Triforce, for this incredibly well structured and great summarizing video.

Commenting as I go along: With Pikmin 2 I'd say they make higher difficulty possibly by, ironically, making it easier in some ways. The caves are a good example of this: Normally, when you play Pikmin, the limited daylight is a time limit that makes the game harder. By removing that time limit, they have more freedom to make harder levels.
