Portal 2 holds a special place in my heart. During a time where I felt tremendously lonely as a kid, I was able to use Portal 2 to escape from these feelings. Same happened to me. I remember spending a day one summer completing the first portal, having such a fun time. The only memories I have from that summer are of me playing games (Probably because I had nothing else to do or anywhere else to go), and portal was a particularly special memory from that time. I cried at the end due to a few emotions, one of which was that this game I had quickly decided I loved could no longer distract me. Some amount of time later during some school year, I walked myself over to walmart to buy Portal 2. I was so excited to play it and wasn't disappointed at all. Video games got me through a lot when I was younger, and I regard my memories of playing them in high regard. Portal was particularly special, and I haven't found a game that captured me in the same way since. I hope to find that feeling again, as an adult who is going through a rough time. I want to find that feeling and connection to a game the same as I had with Portal and a few other games. That feeling of wanting to do nothing else. The excitement of waking up and getting right out of bed in order to continue your journey, with sleep having been an inconvenient interruption. The feeling of the void of your life being completely filled due to just one game being everything you wanted and more, at least until its over.

I found the art style and tone as a method of escapism when I was chronically sick a few years ago. I remember once being on my laptop, sitting in a wheelchair at the hospital's waiting rooms in between the corridors. Was often suffering from sinusitis and gastroenteritis at the time. I passed the time and the pain through trying out the game's puzzlemaker for the first time and was immediately infatuated with it as with all things sandboxy in nature. I created and compiled several of my first puzzles in those 3 hours or so. There was a bit of comedic relief to be had in those times. Strolling around the building and mapping at the same time is not something you see patients doing often.

Even though I'm a huge Portal fan (like actually), this video popped up to my recommended page now (4 months late). I know hardly anyone will see this comment anymore but I just want to say: this video is an amazing and really accurate representation about why I love this series so much. All the clever tricks Valve put to the games to make inexperienced players and veteran gamers feel fantastic. From creepy and beautiful atmospheres to really complex and actually difficult puzzles. I know many people are kind of scared of the "puzzle"- genre for games and don't really like them if they happen to try them. Including myself, I really don't like most puzzle games as they usually are quite boring and slow paced. Portal is different, it is NOT a boring slow paced game with no actual story or a purpose. It has an amazing storyline with unique characters. It still to this day looks stunning. There is no game(series) that is just like it. Somehow it just gets everything on point. (Even for a Nintendo fanboy I am) At first I wanted a sequel all the way but now I'm afraid it would be a disapointment after these 2 games. Infinite cliffhanger doesn't sound that bad after all. Us fans keep it alive! Portal - Still Alive This was a great video about a great game, thank you for doing it. 😊 (And sorry if my English might be a bit sloppy and hard to follow) 😅

I couldn't believe it. It had blown my mind more than any game I had ever tried. Portal 1 and 2 are still in my top 10 games of all time as one entity (you can't have one without the other, they compliment and contrast each other beautifully). Great video again, Liam.

29:52 I believe someone in the comments has already mentioned this, but I'm pretty sure the Resonance Cascade well predates the events of Portal 1, as is strongly implied by some of GLaDOS's lines. It also makes it more believable that an entire facility is being controlled by a rogue A.I., as it would explain why nobody from outside has tried to stop her. It makes sense that a fringe competitor to Black Mesa would go widely ignored with everyone having their hands full with an alien invasion.

I remember being 7 years old when my brother got a copy of the first Portal. We had only one PC that we both used to play and I only got to play when he was done playing. Because of that I have played very little videogames and usually would just ask him to play games that we both liked, so we both enjoyed time together and some times we fought for the game we liked the most to be played next. He didn't really like Portal on the first glance, but I really got into it(since I really loved HL2) So I had to fight my brother to play it, but I was scared of playing it by myself because of the atmosphere. One day I decided I will play it from start to finish! While I was playing my brother sometimes would backseat and help me with puzzles that way we got a lot closer then before and realized that fighting over games is stupid. When I heard of Portal 2 it was like Christmas, but with Gaben instead of Santa. I started saving money to buy, a copy. And on my 11th birthday I went to the store and bought a copy, and it came with the Portal 1,2, some kind of badge, some stickers, a Soundtrack Cd and some bonus stuff(SMS notification sounds e.t.c) I was so hyped to play that I finished both games in 2 days. After that I walked around and told everyone one cared about that game, it gave me so much new friends and I played through co-op with my brother (IT WAS SO FUN TO BE PLAYING ON SEPARATE PCs, BUT STILL SOLVING PUZZLES TOGETHER LIKE WE USED TO) Today I asked my girlfriend to give Portal a try while she shares her screen in Discord. We have so much fun... Thank you, Valve, for making such a great game! And you, Liam, for this amazing video! P.s. The Companion Cube may not be totally 'inanimate' if you take into account of the 'Cube being full of dead people' theory. And I could see GLaDOS being twisted enough to do something like that, that and the achievement for incinerating it is called 'fratricide' which means the murder of a sibling, so, who knows? I think what made the Cube special was because it was the only thing you could touch and think of as a genuine companion, it stood out in the existential and isolating atmosphere of Aperture, i think the symbolism is more so what makes it kinda emotional, a box covered in hearts, that has more color than the otherwise bleak and indifferent aesthetic of the whole facility, and GLaDOS forcing you to burn it, almost gives the feeling that she may not be as 'friendly' as you thought she was, plus there's a kind of creepy metaphor for 'assisted suicide' when you think about it, and how you end up killing GLaDOS by using a similar method.

99999/365.4 ~= 374 years Therefore: If the announcer is correct then Chell has been in suspension for around 400 years or more and has avoided dealing with the Combine invasion. If the announcer is just completely broken and the 99999 was a glitch then who the hell knows when she woke up. I do kinda hope that if Valve ever makes a third game in this series that they go with the second one, because Chell battling the combine with portals would be really cool

IIRC portal 2 takes place 20 years later, as it occurs at the same time as HL2. Edit: also the metal in the facility would have long degraded into rust by then. The fact that literally anything still works and it isn’t full of mud and underwater rivers means it has to be less than 50 years.
@UberMun4 жыл бұрын
@@biggiesmartypants even if there were a few more 9s I'd doubt humanity is gone. Earth appears to be habitable and alien-free for the few seconds we see it at the end of the game. We've been here for a few hundred thousand years so far, I think a few hundred thousand more isn't out of the question.
@raingram4 жыл бұрын
The announcer uses the full word for "fifty" when you wake up the first time, I would assume that if they went to the trouble of having that number be dynamically read out that the announcer would be able to pronounce any number fully. it sounds to me like the system that reads the numbers has a bug. It's tried to read out a number but gotten stuck on the first one. This could mean anything, the system's just badly damaged, it's not been programmed with a word for the number it's trying to read out and can't move on until it's said it. But either way, I don't think we've heard anything more than the first digit of the number.

I totally agree with everything you said. But there’s one thing that made me love Portal more than I already did: Doug Rattman. You glossed over it a bit when talking about portal 1, and it’s definitely an Easter egg where you’d have to look into it a little bit, but Doug Rattman’s story is such a creepy little side-mystery that makes replays just a bit more enjoyable. It’s introduced around half way through the first game, but completely ramps up in the second game, even going so far as to spoil the end of portal 2 via an encrypted image in a sound profile only heard in one of Doug’s secret chambers. Plus, one of, if not the creepiest soundtracks in the whole series is only played in his hideouts in portal 2. It’s such a cool hidden gem within the test chambers that really rewards those with a fancy for lore.

I remember my brother getting the two games on his computer. I wasn't interested, but he convinced me into playing two player with him. I found it interesting how the game was subtly pitting us against each other, despite the fact that we were supposed to work together. And I instantly loved the robotic voice commenting on our work and giving us points (they all went to my brother until I accidentally killed him, and then she started doting on me). One day I was home sick and decided to play the actual main story. For some dumb reason I started with Portal 2, and right when the giant robot said I killed her, I turned off the game and realized I should play the first one. I played it all day, the whole thing in one sitting. I laughed and cried and raged, and I felt dumb and smart at the same time. It was some genius formula in a game. And the villain (GLaDOS, I learned her name was) just got more lovable as she grew more psychotic. And the ending song! What a great way to end a great game! A few days later I started the second game, and felt the same feelings. The diverse characters made it an unpredictable experience. I was worried it wouldn't live up to the first game, but it shattered my expectations! There are many games that have an unforgettable legacy, from the classic arcade games, to Mario, to Undertale, and many more. But Portal is definitely one of them.

This is coming from someone who was introduced to the FPS genre of video games via Portal. (I mainly played Wii and Flash games as a kid, and wasn't interested in games where you shoot at things.) Since then, there are several FPS games that I play regularly, and looking back, I probably wouldn't be interested in them without being introduced to Portal. Even then, that introduction only came because I walked in on my uncle introducing the game to my dad, and the rest is history. (Plus, I've found myself laughing in classes on multiple occasions when I realize why a joke in either of the games is so funny, which makes me love the games even more.) TL:DR I probably wouldn't be a video game person without being introduced to Portal, and it's special to me for that very reason.

Portal is another world in speedrunning. Unlike other games, the speedruns arent just repeating the same task over and over, partially yes, but also there is an entire community, hunting down microscopic glitches and tricks, the speedruns getting more and more mindboggling, its genuinely one of the best games to speedrun.

Portal has been a really impactful part of my life. There's so much to love about it, and just one of those things that really stood out to me was its atmospher. Aperture Science itself. In the first game it displays itself as designed to be pristine and glossy, but is showing some wear and tear. As you progress, you find even more of that decay until you see the behind the scenes. That was really intriguing to me. They develop it even further in portal 2 with the ruins of the levels in the previous game and the hidden, sealed off origins of Aperture in what's got to be several kilometers below the surface of the earth. GLaDOS is my favorite character in all video games, she's such an enigma, and so dynamic. The writing for her (and everything else) is excellent, and Ellen Mclain does an absolutely phenomenal job giving GLaDOS her personality. Portal is really something you can just hyperfixate on for hours at a time, be it actually playing the game, or in clickholes searching through the lore.

I think we need a Portal 3 in the form of a map editor with an improved engine and more intuitive level creation, while maintaining the capabilities of the hammer editor. What the game lacks currently is the ability for people to easily create campaigns (like Portal Stories: Mel). Just imagine what people could do if Portal included 3D modeling tools for interesting environments, the option to add audio clips into the game, in-engine scripted scenes and mod support that are easily accessible to everyone.

When you taunt in front of a camera, you get a special dialog from GLaDOS, and you see so many of these dialogues that when you arrive at the vault with nothing to do after doing an incredible fling, you just feel the desire to taunt, and then, after your partner taunts as well, bam! You saved science!

43:50 There was originally going to be a "Gel gun", and it would work exactly like it did in "Tag: The Power of Paint". However, they scrapped it because it over-complicated things (The Source engine is well-capable of switchable weapons, but... It kinda doesn't work in a puzzle game?) There's a mod called "Aperture Tag: The Paint Gun Testing Initiative" that brings the concept to life, though. And, in fact, was one of the first paid mods to ever be released on Steam.

I found this video after listening to the Wheatley song from Miracle of Sound and listening to all the portal 1 and 2 ending songs. Years back, before I had a good computer, I found Portal 2 on Xbox 360. At the time I played the entire thing and I had gotten the first one a little after on Steam. Now the computer I ran the first one on was pretty slow, but I managed to get through it. I think since I loved the humor and also puzzle games a lot, this one by far has been one I have come back to again and again. The great use of thinking out a puzzle of each room and how I could get through it differently was always enjoyable! Portal 2 especially I have played both on single player and multiplayer quite a few times over. I completed Portal 2 on the 360 cause of how I enjoyed the whole story..experiencing it over and over. I have to say it is one of my favorite franchises and always will be. Also loved the little easter eggs throughout the game, secret rooms that I found, and many other variety of things I experience in each of my play throughs. Also since I loved portal soo much.. When I built my first desktop computer. I named her GlaD0s. She has a yellow light on the top and her case feels like it belongs in the universe of Portal. I even have a Aperture logo I found a sticker of online for the side window on her. In fact I am on the very computer I built and use her daily. I also have a few other items I found online like a USB turret (who has been used so much it doesn't make sound anymore but moves), portal cookie cutters, and the portal companion cube tray.

A few things to note about Portal since after the release of Portal 2. One is there was this popular toys-to-life game, when it was still a big trend which died down, but one of the games that came out of that time was Lego Dimensions in 2015. The premise of that game is kinda like BlazBlue: Cross-Tag Battle by Arc System Works where the idea is the studio combines almost all the franchises they've touched upon before and even franchises they haven't made a game out of yet into one big cross-over and the game itself basically plays like any game they make. In the case of Lego Dimensions, one of the franchises it featured was Portal. The story of how that came to be is through a Lego site where people submit their own ideas for Lego sets that if it gets enough supporters, it could be be officially made into a Lego set, this site would become known today as Lego Ideas. This is how Lego sets based on Ghostbusters, Back to the Future and Doctor Who got their own Lego sets and how they even made it to Lego Dimensions. But one set proposal that did stood out there was a set based on Portal, well, mostly Portal 2. While the set was never actually made into an offical Lego set, it did get enough support that it would make it into Lego Dimensions where it plays a part in the main story mode and even got a Level Pack. And let me tell you, I can tell that TT Games were fans of the Portal franchise and even the Half-Life franchise since there are tons of call backs and attention to detail thrown in and they had all the orignal voice actors return to reprise their roles. It's a shame that it was never given a Team Pack with Atlas and P-Body, the two robots from co-op mode from Portal 2. Also, a recent short game came out called Aperture Desk Job, which is meant to tie in and show off the capabilities of Valve's new handheld, the Steam Deck, which is set in the Portal universe and it actually does explore additional lore in the Portal universe and Aperture Science.
