This is such a unique video. The way you explain and show your progress is excellent. I’ve watched so many videos on pilea plants and they are very similar. @@ronjag97 Lucky you! I always reuse it in some fashion. Even if I just mix it in to my philo mixes. They go nuts with it. I wish there was some science explaining why it works so well. I know it has high levels of iodine which is effective against yeasts, molds, fungi, viruses, and protozoans. What more could you ask for really? 🤷‍♂️🤸‍♂️

The sticks with leaves have to use majority of their energy to keep the "old" leaves alive and little energy to make roots. The stick by itself can spend all it's energy growing pups.

Ahhh I moved for six months to another country and I thought my plants were in good hands but they were no at all 😭 my super gorgeous afro-pilea lost aaaaaall of its bottom leaves, it was almost three years worth of humongous hand palm sized leaves... I was so upset! I searched and searched about plain stem propagation, but couldn't find anything... I'm so attached to my plant I was waiting to cut it until I find something that looked trustworthy and omg thank u, I now feel comfortable enough to chop my leggy pilea, the stem was about 30cm tall. Hopefully this works!

I propagated the heck out of my pilea about 6 weeks ago and it got a bit out of hand. I've now got 8 pileas pottet, the leftover root system from the mother plant (wich is producing a lot of babys). Five stem cuttings in sphagnum moss and one baby still in water. I'm still waiting on the stem chunk babys to get bigger most of them are tiny and barely visible but there are a lot of babys.

Have you tried mixing sphagnum moss with peat moss? I've got my own experiment going with a raphidaphora tetrasperma that I bought that turned out to be an unrooted cutting. I cut it into three plants by node with one in sphagnum, one in peat, and one in a mix. The one in mix looks like it's doing the best? I think the mix is retaining more moisture while still remaining breathable. I haven't pulled them out yet though.

They are easy to propagate but it's a different method, there's lots of videos on here if you search!

Hello do pilea give new leaf in winter as fast as in summer
@TechplantChannel
@TechplantChannel 3 жыл бұрын
no, because the sun is out less

👍 Sun is less, temps are lower and yhis entirely slows down their whole physiology. That's why it's crucial you water less in winter.

But what happens when you just chop the head off a big plant? Will it grow a few babies or tons?

Can you do this on a not so old Pilea? Because I fear it will die soon. It's only 3 inch tall from the base of the soil.

I really wanna try this! do we absolutely have to use sphagnum moss? or could we just use perlite or water?
@TechplantChannel

Perlite should work fine as well!

@@TechplantChannel just wanted to come back and say thank you! I've cut my plant in half and I have major success. The bottom half has grown a lot of babies with a bunch of huge leaves, the top half has grown a small baby, and I even propagated through a leaf cutting - which took the absolute longest, but resulted in a baby big enough for its own pot :))

This absolutely didn't happen for me. I've had my Pilea for about a year now. No babies have ever grown. Not even one. About 6 months ago, I cut the top off and it rooted quickly. I planted it and still no babies. The stem segments and stem itself died without producing any babies.

nooooooo! Im sorry, did you try it with sphagnum moss

I think some plants just don't like to propagate. I currently have a pothos plant that was unhappy no matter what I did, and out of 15 cuttings that I put in either water or sphagnum moss all of them failed to produce roots except 1! 1 out of 15!!! The rest all rotted or grew a single leaf that then dried up and died. Yes I cut them correctly at the node and there were aerial root tips present on the cuttings. They were kept in a window facing North and there was no reason why they should have failed. That plant is just...uncooperative. 😑 Everyone is saying "I literally just cut a vine off and throw it in a vase of water and forget about it for a month and it grows perfectly." Here I am babying this particular plant and its cuttings and I got 1 with roots. The monstera deliciosa cuttings are doing great in contrast. Your pilea may just be uncooperative as well.

Time of year and tambien temps play a HUGE role too.

How old do they have to be to cut them? I bought one and it seems to obviously be a babyish and how long until they have like a “wooden” base?
@TechplantChannel

once they hit like 8 inches tall and have a bunch of leaves or old leave node things feel free to chop away

So branches are babies right? Are my arms and legs babies too?
@mannys9130
@mannys9130 4 жыл бұрын
If you cut off your arm or leg it will not sustain itself, so no. 😉 Babies are grown to multiply the plant and if cut off they will root and grow solo away from the mother. A baby has the ability to use undifferentiated cells to grow roots and become its own plant where other cuttings or parts of the mother may not have that ability.
