I followed your tutorial and made a pillbox hat to wear for a wedding, as a bridesmaid. I just added one circle of padding on top because it turned to be too tall with more than that. It was so pretty and I got lots of compliments! Thank you for this tutorial!

millinery wire is just as inexpensive as regular wire, but is wrapped in rayon so its easier to work with and definitely a better choice for hat making if you can get your hands on some :)

Fun tutorial! I’m finishing the final stitching on mine today :) I got to the part where you sew the top to the band and realized my hat was bigger than I wanted so I took it apart and started over. Now i think it’s slightly smaller and taller than I wanted lol. Sooo what I’m saying here is that the mock-up she suggested is really a good idea. It might actually save you time (and sore fingers) in the end.

Awesome! I've been having a bit of a slow time with coming up with sewing ideas so I decided to challenge myself to make at least one outfit from each decade from 1910 to 1980s and the pill box hat was totally a needed accessory!

Thank you for the excellent tutorial! I've already made four pillbox hats -- two for boucle suits, one for a dress/coat ensemble, and one for a leopard coat. These were all vintage outfits I had in my closet and I was able to find the matching fabric as skirts under the same brand on eBay. You're so talented...love your artistry, skill, and passion!

I like the larger size, especially on you. It suits your hair and face (as does the color). Sometimes the small ones, while being cute and dainty, can be too small and end up making the wearers head look massive.

I swear, I'm going to send you all my vintage hats and jewelry. My grandmother worked at the jewelry counter at JL Hudson's in Detroit when it was the wealthiest city in the USA, about 1950-60; I inherited some fabulous stuff. I wore the pieces in the 80s, when I was first working, but it'd be so nice to know they were enjoyed again, and maybe even providing inspiration for a few garments!
@AngelaClaytonCostumery6 жыл бұрын
Wow, what an interesting history! I'm sure you were better dressed than most people in the 80's (though perhaps that isn't saying much haha)! I've gotten more into vintage clothing recently (both sewing and buying it) and I swear half the fun of wearing it is thinking about the life it had with its original owner. I guess I feel that way about all antiques - I have some prints from the 1800's and it's crazy to think how different the life of its original was to mine (and how different the world was)! I do have a PO box if you ever feel compelled to pass something along! Just shoot me an email and I would be happy to provide it. :)
@celestewatson48746 жыл бұрын
Angela Clayton so lovely of you to reply! You just look so very pretty in all historical and vintage styles, it'd be a pleasure to see some of these gorgeous old pieces serve as inspiration and convince more people that the simplicity and *quality* of clothes before fast fashion is worth returning to.

Awesome tutorial, watched it a million times and finally made one in an afternoon. One thing I did differently though, and really helped, was when finally installing the rim/perimeter I basted the fleece and top instead of pinning it, so there was no struggle with the pins holding the top. Once installed I removed the basting stitches. Hope that helps someone! xx

Nice hat. I just made two hats, one for me and one for my son, based loosely on the styles of hats worn by people of the Central Asian steppes. We do LARPing. But during the warm weather, I wear a vintage pillbox hat with this costume (somehow it works!) and now, thanks to you, I’ll finally be able to keep it on my head while we run through the woods - I’ll sew in a hair comb. Pins just weren’t working!

Thank you for your easy to understand tutorial! I am making a linen pillbox hat (natural color) to match my vintage linen duster. I wish that I could send a photo! Beloved has bought for vintage suits for me that just scream for hats! I have my templates and supplies, and Moby Stick (my sewing machine) is more than ready! I'd like to! I worry about them getting too long with more elaborate ones like the medieval headpieces. But a lot of my hats are just rectangles and circles which *should* translate okay into a step by step tutorials...so maybe an Edwardian or 18th century hat will be next :)

Thank you so much for this amazing tutorial! I just finished my pillbox hat today, following each steps of this video. I have always wanted a pillbox hat. This was my first sewing project and my hat looks very neat. It actually took me a total of 10 hours to make it though, but it was a lot of fun! I spent a lot of time on measuring and testing things, making sure it would fit perfectly. It is surprising how adding a few millimeters to the diameter increases the circumference by a lot. At the end, I added 2 combs instead of just one so it stays better on my thin and straight hair. Thank you again, this was the best tutorial to make a pillbox hat! :)

Could I use bendy wire for this hat? If it's too delicate, maybe I could twist two pieces of wire together? Also, thank you for making such a simple tutorial. Most people either overcomplicate things or leave out certain steps that beginners might not know about.
@AngelaClaytonCostumery6 жыл бұрын
Not sure what bendy wire is (doesn't most wire bend?) I'd highly recommend buying the 18 gauge stuff. Thinner wire may break and cause the hat to lose its shape over time. And I would worry about twisting wire together since that makes it thicker and harder to work with (and not necessarily stronger).
@ladyoftradition14016 жыл бұрын
Thanks, I'll definitely look for it then.
