This is a very common type of air accident. They call it the Impossible Turn. It’s also one of the very first things that you’re taught to avoid when you learn how to fly, at least I was. You ever notice how there’s almost always golf courses at the usual departure end of airports? They’re there for a reason! In case of an emergency on takeoff, like what happened to Harrison Ford at SMO (Santa Monica Airport) several years ago, those open spaces can be considered for an immediate emergency landing. Pilots are supposed to keep an eye out for places on the ground that might be used as optional emergency landing sites. Although everyone’s first thought is to go back to the safety of the airport, that’s usually a lethal choice. Because making that turn back when power has been lost costs you everything in lift, as we saw today. Going forward in a glide into an emergency landing in an open area is the better option. The most well known example of this is, of course, Captain “Sully” Sullenberger, who made the bold choice to ditch onto the Hudson River after a bird strike over the crowded boroughs of New York.

Engine out on takeoff you DO NOT turn back. At 900 feet you will lose too much speed and altitude trying to make the turn back. Configure the plane for best glide and land off airport, you have a much better chance. We call this the impossible turn for a reason.
@suzukirider90304 сағат бұрын
...well, 900 ft AGL is enough for a teardrop turn in a C-172, even more so in an RV-10 with slightly better glide ratio. 500 ft is the minimum for that. So it would likely be preferred to attempting a landing in dense urban sprawl. This pilot attempted to fly a closed pattern and land on 24 - for that, he did not have enough altitude... RIP

😢😢😢 Carmen, aged 31, passed away from her short battle with cancer in October 2024. She left behind her two year old son, husband, & healthy parents. Throughout her short life, a few friends would mention to her about Jesus Christ, but she rejected any preaching of Jesus Christ. She would say she would believe if she saw Jesus Christ himself! One day she started to get very ill. She went to the docs to get reports on why she was quite ill. After a few tests, doctors diagnosed her with terminal cancer. She didn’t have long to live. She would be in the hospital, and that was where she would have two encounters with God. One evening she had a dream where she fell off from somewhere and a figure extended His hand to save her. She saw a male figure which seem to give a radiant of light. She kept thinking that this might be the Jesus Christ that her friends would tell her about in the past. It was soon she started to believe that this figure was indeed God (Jesus Christ). Not long after she had an actual near-death experience where Jesus Christ was about to take her away to bring her up to heaven. But she refused to leave this world & came back to life briefly. She shared both encounters with her love ones letting them know that Jesus Christ is indeed real. This was her dying wish to let them know this truth so they too will believe in Jesus Christ as their Savior & go to heaven. Very soon after, she left this world. Carmen’s godly encounters should convince you that Jesus Christ is real. She waited until her final moment to accept Jesus Christ as her Savior. Please don’t wait until your final breaths to possibly accept Jesus Christ as your savior.

More and more people are flying and giving pilot lessons. More planes are being built. More planes in the sky means more casualties...

All it takes is failure to complete a safety check list to crash and burn. Like John Denver not knowing that his fuel tank was low, and not knowing where the emergency fuel switch was, or not knowing that he couldn't reach it behind the seat. More and more people are flying for fun. Lots of retired doctors and dentists are becoming pilots just because they want to fly. We have emergency landings and casualties all the time where I live-at least once a year- where we have 2 private airports.

I worked in a building just off the runway 24 from 1980 to 1986. There used to be a large cornfield on the north side of the runway. That’s all houses and retail now. The warehouses off Raymer have always been there and not a factor if you’ve made the field. The takeaway from my comment is Pilots don’t have many options other than a return to the runaway or put it down on a street. May God rest their souls and comfort the family. Terrible tragedy. 🙏🏻

@Melie7890Күн бұрын
Whoa.
@camward9293Күн бұрын
Sounds like that wasn't necessarily the plane's fault. RVs are solid aircraft. As far as airplanes in general go, almost every single class and type has multiple accidents attributed to them. That's just how it is unfortunately, but the longer a model of aircraft is around and the more of them are sold, the chances of an accident increase just by sheer volume of airframes built. It's the same thing with cars, trains, boats, motorcycles, you name it. Very often it's not the aircraft but the pilot flying it that causes an accident. Now I am not claiming to know the specifics of the example you gave, just stating a statistical fact.

Hard to be certain due to the quality of the video, but it appears (0:52) that the pilot has completely lost control. I don't know if he was trying to execute a turn and stalled, or what else may have cause him to be, apparently, in almost a 90 degree bank. But, no matter what, a crash will have a better outcome if the pilot flies the airplane all the way to the crash rather than losing control.

My exact thoughts. Pilot just left the airport, had some catastrophic failure, and needed to go right back. Controller asks him to make a left turn. It obviously happened so fast there was nothing he could do. I’m sure he would’ve saved them had he been able! Everyone is judging the pilot for being a lousy father and giving their “expert” opinion on what he did wrong. Lame.

I learned to fly in a suburb of Dallas. It was drilled into me countless times that if we lost power at any altitude less than 1500' above the ground that we would look to stuff the airplane into whatever parking lot, road, clear space etc. and fly the airplane as long as possible into the crash. In the photo this appears that one wing has stalled due to low speed in the turn and once the wing stalls at low altitude you are just along for the ride. Small airplanes can fly straight and level at a relatively, survivable low speed. I fly out of a much less densely packed area now but still say to myself "no turning back unless at least 1500"" Even then one must react immediately, lower the nose and pitch for best glide and resist the urge to stretch a glide where you are likely to stall.

I go to sleep now with grief for hearing this, and feeling for the warehouse workers who also endured a horrific experience.
