Using pilot arc torch with non pilot machine. Plasma Torch Pilot Arc Conversion check out my video on that links below .But can you use a pilot arc plasma torch on a hf machine without using a plasma hf start to pilot arc converter ? This is how i do it on my cut 40 plasma cutter hf conversion pilot arc i just use my earth lead dinse plug to modify my torch. What is pilot arc ? and why should you care it makes a huge difference when you try and cut pantied or rusty steel.

Good work. It reminded me of the mid 80’s when I was in the business of removing the “Ignition Control Module (ICM)” when going bad in a car and replacing it with a contact breaker (points). I had some stubborn customers who thought that a contact breaker was better than ICM. They were cheaper not better. Prior to the conversion, I had the customer sign a piece of paper absolving me from all responsibility on the repair. It was a good business and to this day, electrical repairs on a car are very lucrative.

The problem with this hack, that the internal nozzle wears out faster. There was a german video with some cheap plasma cutter the same way as in this video, and they recommended a foot switch, connected to the ground, and the switch only has to be pushed as the cutting starts. Thus the wear out can be reduced.

Thanks for posting this. I noticed on a schematic for a pilot arc machine that there is a resistor on the green line to earth before it joins up with the big earth ground. This would probably encourage the current to go the the big ground if possible when in use. I have no idea how big a resistor would be needed. I would guess that’s why someone thought the wiring trick messed with their machine.

just thinking about what you have commented it would be a really good idea to find out the size of the resistor on that machine so you can put it inline of the wire may be just used as a point of failure if there is a bad earth turning your torch into the main earth? not sure how deadly that would be? i have just got a ltsuk ct 416 but can not find a manual for it if i need this to make a piot arc or if my machine has it out the box

@@cybertec2005 I have in the way from ali express two resistors 10 ohms 200w, (=20ohms 400w), and a circuit with power relay 30A, typical module, but ATTENTION to this: the circuit we can look in the video have capacitors and resistors to attenuate the sparks and danger of auto-welding contacts, the solution is this www.nutsvolts.com/questions-and-answers/relay-contact-life I will put 2 capacitors in parallel es.aliexpress.com/item/4000393128501.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.274263c0oD38YK with one resistor 50 ohms es.aliexpress.com/item/32982418338.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.274263c0oD38YK about the value of resistor for pilot 20 ohms 500W is the intended but 400w is very near for some seconds no problems I think. I have read values from 4 ohms to 20 ohms, more ohms more security and minus power in arc, some people recommend 15 ohms, then 10+10, I can experiment 10 ohms if any issue with 20. In summary, I have bought a non pilot arc plasma cutter to convert it to pilot. es.aliexpress.com/item/4000340262503.html?spm=a2g0s.9042311.0.0.274263c0aRBVoE ...in the process... And to clarify, the pilot arc need a power resistor to minimize the current, this resistor is great in volume. And need a relay to cut the use of this bypass, but due to high amperage the relay need avoid sparks with capacitors and resistor (this resistor is not the main resistor). In this plasma cutter there are connector to the relay and the pilot terminal but if not, there are another relay to HF, then use in same order in parallel.

Have you had any issues running this on an HF machine without resistors or caps or anything? Once it is lit and you have cut some steel does it stay lit as long as you have the trigger pressed? Seems like the HF start could stop trying to start it once an arc is made but seems like it might only stop the HF circuit once you are cutting. Typically HF start only runs long enough to get the arc started or to restart a lost arc. Also do you notice any additional wear to the inside of the tip or to the electrode from using it like this? Thanks
@petestools
@petestools 4 жыл бұрын
once its lit and you start cutting it just reverts to the drag tip as if you are just cutting like normal ,The only difference is you cut start a cut without cleaning the steel first.
@huntridesail
@huntridesail 4 жыл бұрын
@@petestools So let's say I want to cut some painted grate or mesh like material..... Would it stay lit the whole time? Also, you said something about it working well on thin stuff. Does the cutter still function the same while cutting as it did before the mod regardless of the thickness of the material?
@huntridesail
@huntridesail 4 жыл бұрын
@@petestools I am really tempted to buy a cheaper cut-50 with HF start and add a little terminal that is wired internally to the clamp connection. Then I can swap the torch for an AG-60 with pilot start connection and save some money 💰.
