Back in the 1970s when I wanted to be an airline pilot this is what you had to have. A college degree, 1500 hrs with an ATP and for added good measure a B 727 flight engineer rating. All before you reached the age of 28. You could get hired up to age 35 but you better be walking through the HR door with heavy multi engine jet time. For example, from another airline or the military. I had to pay for most of my college by working part time and going to school full time. When I added flight instruction to the mix it just became too much. So, I decided to finish college first then get a job and tackle the flight training. Now we are in the late 70s when I got my degree just in time for one hell of a recession. Finding a job that paid anything was a big task. I tried working and flying but kept on running out of money. Also, airlines were laying off pilots left and right and the industry looked very bleak. I think that there were more airline pilots out on the street then flying. Also, I was over the age limit of 28. So, I decided to abandon my dream and move on with my life.

I believe the shortage will hit really hard starting from 2025 all the way to 30s .As I can see , a lot of airlines are placing a plethora of orders all around the world ,and the barrier to entry into flight schools these days is becoming more and more expensive. I myself ,have a frozen ATPL. The shortage is more for experienced personnel .but , the future looks bright 😊

Amazing !... I was just reading this today morning and Captain Gabrielle covers it immediately!... Captain... Have you ever heard of anyone getting a direct entry into the charter/business jet/ private pilot side of aviation after completion of 250 hrs of CPL ?...Is it possible in the present scenario?

You can work with CPL but only into specific sectors. I myself worked as Skydiving Pilot many years ago and the ATPL was not required...

I have a question regarding maximum flight hours that can be performed by a pilot. When the authorities state that 1000 hours maximum can be flown in a year, do they mean 1000 hours in the preceding 12 months, or in the calendar year?

For years pilots and crews have been used and abused ……lowering salaries increasing sectors to the max and increasing fatigue levels …….not surprising there have been so many crews retiring early …..and now the industry is suffering ….no surprise there is a worldwide shortage of experience .,! 😮
