A passenger plane carrying 19 people crashed during take-off in the Nepali capital Kathmandu on July 24, 2024. The pilot survived, but 18 others were killed. Eighteen Nepalis and one Yemeni citizen were said to have been aboard the flight. The Saurya Airlines flight, bound for the tourist hub of Pokhara, was carrying two crew and 17 of the company’s staff members, when it reportedly caught fire after skidding off the runway during take-off. Video of the crash shared by Nepal’s military showed the plane’s fuselage split apart and burned to a husk. Nepal has a poor air safety record, with a spate of deadly light plane and helicopter crashes over the decades.

To clarify this, the pilot went through the windshield and hit something on the ground. He was barely saved. His face is all messed up and his eyes are damaged too. It was lucky that he was saved. It was a test flight with all the crew members, mechanics, and engineers, no regular passengers onboard. At the bank angle, what is the pilot supposed to do, as he had no control over the plane? It was shortly after take off and it was very low altitude for recovery. I feel sad for the pilot and other people onboard. The pilot is getting trauma for lifetime because of this. Let's not say anything bad about him. I'm happy that at least he is saved. When he recovers completely, we can get more details directly from him about what happened at the time of the crash. Saving even one life is a great deal. I'm so glad he gets to live. Feeling sorry for him too because now he has to carry the weight on his shoulders. Please don't say anything bad about the pilot unless the investigation is complete. The black boxes and other necessary utilities have been recovered too. Sending speedy recovery wishes to the pilot.

Well said. Many times the pilot is blamed and the truth is revealed that says something different. Here the pilot can talk and the truth can be known. Sorry for all the pain and loss that the families will now have. If there was nothing the pilot could do... then there was nothing that could be done.

It's not if you actually use your brain. The pilot will always drive/operate to reduce damage to themselves. That is why car drivers are least likely to be injured in accidents compared to passengers

But thinking about a realistic common scenario with my brain, say if I was driving and someone in oncoming traffic turned suddenly close in front of me, I would instinctively steer my car away from where they were coming from, because our instinct is to avoid danger, and this also mitigates risk of a head-on collision. This actually means I would be putting myself closest to danger and my passenger further away. If the cars hit, I would be first to be injured. So now the question is, did _you_ need to use _more_ of your brain to think about it?

Additional information: pilot said he couldn’t climb after the initial take off the plane’s control stopped working. The plane stalled one side due to failure to gain altitude and dived head first. The plane bumped into some tanks or infrastructure of some sort so the Pilot happened to land away from the fire.

Apparently these people in the comments are somehow aviation experts. The Aviation industry in Nepal is very old and still follow the procedures made in the 90’s what needs to happen is the CAAN (FAA of that country) NEEDS to make a better policy for these shady airlines for better plane safety and proper maintenance of the aircraft and government regulations in-order to prevent more future tragedies so sad to see.

This is Private domestic flights Not a first time tragedy happened several times happened. I don’t think anyone was comparing, nor do I claim to know which pilots are more experienced, but if you are going to compare, let me just remind you that at least pilots from India & Nepal are qualified……….. the same can’t be said for many in Pakistan, hence why PIA was banned from flying in US & Europe Airspace! And I say that as an “Overseas Pakistani”. RIP to all those who passed away. My sincerest condolences to the families who’ve lost a loved one.
