That is how I have started, I found a Pimsleur French in my city’s library, it was only CDs and there were no activities like the app just, audio. I followed the method and when I finished it, I went to alliance francaise, took the test and my score was B1, which it was good considering I didn’t know how to read and write. It was a great way to start, I am doing the same with my German lessons, but this time doing the reading and the exercise the app offers. When I did the math over how much I would spend in a in person class for basic speaking I would’ve spent much more, it is nice to skip the basic and it even gets you to intermediate. It worked well for me, but you gotta do it once a day just like it recommends.

I took three years of French in high school but I’m very out of practice. I’ve visited France almost a decade ago and it’d be nice to go again with some practice of the language

I really appreciate the balanced review! I also like your English pronunciation, allowing me to speed the video up to 1.5x without loosing a word. That being said, I did just watch three of your review videos at 1.5x speed, meaning that if people are looking for a condensed, quick review, you may be leaving some time on the table. I also appreciate the selectable section markers that are well used and the small references to subscribing (not making it more than about 10-15 seconds). Does the Pimsleur app allow for adjusting the speech speed?

Yeah, I have to agree with the occasional boredom critique. This doesn't happen in every lesson. But some days, right around the 15-20 min mark, I wonder...man, how much longer is this session? It's momentary, tho. And the sense of progress feels real, and that's a huge motivation.

I have wanted to learn a second language for quite some time but was uncertain about which route to go or what app to choose. Your informative videos have changed that. Thank you for this video and the others. it has steered me in the right direction.

Thanks for your excellent well-balanced, time factored yet systematic review of Pimsleur French! Something what I was looking for that I precisely got from your review. Two aspects of the lessons as a drag and imagery to understand the context as a tool to reinforce learning sounds negative yet thanks for bringing it to help in the comparative analysis. Thanks again. Looking forward to viewing other Spanish, German and Japanese language reviews.

I have nearly completed all 150 Pimsleur French lessons. While I agree with the review and recommend the app, realize that it’s only going to get you so far. In general, I would say it ends up at the A2 level with a few intermediate concepts mixed in, and it will leave you with significant gaps in your understanding of French grammar.

The video is quite outdated, so the audio recognition and audio speed now available in the app, so you better try the free plan yourself.

Hello, I have been learning France for years and have an advance level; however, I would like to improve my accent. I thought Pimsleur could help with that, but based on your video, it might not be the case. Do you know any other app that could help? Thanks :)

This is interesting. I borrowed Pimsleur French 1 in an older cd only version from the library, so it’s interesting that the app has more practice options. It mentions reading exercises, but the library doesn’t have that part available, so I’ve been doing only the audio.

That's the benefit of the online subscription vs getting CDs from the library - you get the additional online practice exercises...

What is your reason for learning French? I have recently found myself a beautiful French girlfriend and in just over a month I'm going to meet her parents in Paris for the first time (we currently live in Australia). The Dad speaks good broken English and the mum less so, would love to come in and make a good impression! Fingers crossed.

I'm not really trying to learn French at the moment, but I did tour Europe after graduating high school. France was definitely one of my favorite places! And our tour guide just gave us simple words/phrases during free time in case of emergency! Question! Are you able to do the 1 language for $19 and then later on Upgrade to multiple languages? I want to learn Spanish to converse with long lost family members, but my fiance and I plan to take a trip to Japan in a few years! So there will be a big gap between learning the different languages.

I have watched over 10 of your vidios, thanks for the good information.

The site said it combines reading with speaking, but so far its only been speaking. I found that taxing because I'm more visually than aurally oriented. I would prefer to have the two aspects, hearing and reading, provided together, or at least the speaking sessions followed by reading. Although this seemed to be what was promised, it wasn't what was delivered. This is especially relevant for French, I think, because its pronunciation is so dissimilar from its spelling; its important to me to compare these two together, since they really cannot be separated, except artificially, in the process of studying and learning a new language.
@TestPrepInsight
@TestPrepInsight Жыл бұрын
Pimsleur is more audio-oriented for sure, but you do get writing and reading drills in the supplemental exercises.

I'm interested in learning French because there is a lot of materials that are not available in other languages, and I want access! But also because learning other languages helps you understand more people, not just linguistically but also the way thoughts may be structured differently and what aspects are emphasised! I'm currently looking for a language tool that isn't just vocab memorisation but also has the fundamentals to producing output and comprehending inputs. Though I do struggle with longform content, so I fear the issue you mentioned with Pimsleur regarding attention span may be amplified for me.

I would say Pimsleur or Rocket French, though they are both generally more intensive than other aps like Babbel and Duolingo. If you want something a little lighter, I would suggest checking out Babbel.
