I have been using Rosetta Stone for Russian for about 10 months. I made it through Unit 12 and I noticed that my reading and writing (especially my reading) were very strong, but my listening and speaking had barely progressed at all. I watched your first video and signed up for Pimsleur. Honestly, I love it! I am an audio learner by nature so it helps me so much more than Rosetta Stone. I "know" almost all the words I am have used so far but it really helps hearing them and putting them into practice. I am also able to hear the grammar changes and stuff quickly. Something I never really got with Rosetta Stone. My opinion Pimsleur is sooooooo hard, yet sooooooo rewarding. Have a nice day ❤

I was waiting for this review. I do plan to use Pimsluer for Chinese. I used Pimsluer 5 levels for French, and I can say its pretty much exactly similar stuff to what you said for Chinese.

我叫Chris。 我住了大阪5年了。我在大阪学了中文。 It’s interesting that you brought up Brazilian Portuguese. As part of a personal reset, I decided to start studying it 4 days ago and actually took a Zoom lesson. I am actually enjoying it thus far. Right before this video I was watching another one on the Speaking Brazilian Portuguese channel, and the host was talking with a Mandarin speaker about the difference between Mandarin loan words in Brazilian Portuguese and their original pronunciations in Mandarin. I like the examples you use of how you are engaged with languages while doing other chores. This is very relatable.

Oh so fascinating---I didn't think about there being loan words between Mandarin and Brazilian Portuguese. Will need to look into that. Happy to hear about your zoom lesson! I'm guessing it went well. I also had my first zoom lesson in Portuguese this weekend, definitely felt the high after!

If you like listening practice (English subtitles and Portuguese closed captions are provided), then you’ll be able to learn the Brazilian Portuguese version of Mandarin loan words. Great to hear that your Portuguese Zoom session also went well! Remember that you can use Portuguese in Macau.

It’s still really cool how you can say stuff in Chinese! I can understand how it’s tricky using apps that have specific conversation outlines as it can definitely keep a person limited. Super cool how you’ve used language laddering to learn Chinese! You are doing amazing! Also excited for you to be going to the polyglot conference! Maybe you and Jess will see each other ☺️ keep going!

I agree with your review. Pimsleur Chinese Mandarin Levels 1-3 were great but, Levels 4-5 compress too much random vocab into each lesson. Example in one of the lessons in Level 4: bamboo, gazebo, ancient city, traditional town, built, rebuilt, architecture, skyscraper, and more.

I'm currently learning Mandarin as well and use the Mandarin Blueprint course. I LOVE their course and they teach you how to read and write, then speak. Being able to read and write Mandarin really helps with comprehension and speaking. I've only been studying lowkey for 10 months and know how to read and write characters over 300 characters (in the correct stroke order). If you're looking to try another resource, check them out and see what you think. Thus far I think that this is one of the best ways to learn Mandarin. But I that your overall goal for learning Mandarin and availability to learn will matter in determining if the course is well suited for you or not. 加油!

I tried their 30 day challenge! It's excellent, I just started it when Mandarin wasn't my focus and lost touch. Will definitely return to it at some point. Thanks for the recommendation!
